Phytoconstituents and antioxidant properties among commercial tea (Camellia sinensis L.) clones of Iran Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Azadi Gonbad,Reza; Afzan,Adlin; Karimi,Ehsan; Sinniah,Uma Rani; Kumara Swamy,Mallappa.
Background Tea (Camellia sinensis), a well-known beverage is consumed frequently worldwide due to its high antioxidant properties. The present study determines the amount of phytochemicals and antioxidant activities among 12 high yielding tea clones cultivated in Iran. Results Among the 12 clones studied, tea clone Iran 100 had the highest total phenolic content and total flavonoid content with values of 8.44 ± 1.03 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram dry weight and 4.50 ± 0.16 mg rutin equivalents per gram dry weight respectively. High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis of phenolics and flavonoids in 12 clones revealed the presence of (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin-gallate, (-)-epicatechingallate,...

Antibacterial activity of Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Born) from the Indian coast against human pathogens Phyton
Manilal,A; Sujith,S; Selvin,J; Shakir,C; Seghal Kiran,G.
The antibacterial property of the red algae, Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Born) collected from the southwest coast of India (Indian Ocean) was evaluated against three multidrug resistant human pathogens. Four different solvents: ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, methanol and phosphate buffer saline (PBS) were used with this purpose. Dried samples extracted with methanol showed broadest and highest antimicrobial activity when compared to other solvents. However, PBS extract showed no antibacterial activity. The highly active compounds red alga, F. hillebrandii were fractionated and purified using different chromatographic systems, including reverse phase HPLC and GCMS. The analysis revealed that the most abundant metabolite was the oleic acid (51.33%) followed...

Bioactive Constituents of Shoot Extracts of Sisymbrium irio L. Against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae Planta Daninha
AKHTAR,R.; JAVAID,A.; QURESHI,M.Z..
ABSTRACT: The present study was carried out to check the antifungal potential of Sisymbrium irio L. shoot extract against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae (FOC). In preliminary bioassays, different concentrations (1 to 5%) of leaf, stem and fruit extracts were evaluated against FOC. All the extracts were effective against the pathogen. However, the leaf extract was found the most effective causing 25-41% decrease in FOC biomass. The fractionation of methanolic leaf extract was done by two organic solvents namely n-hexane and chloroform. Different concentrations (1.56 to 200 mg mL-1) of these fractions were tested against FOC. The n-hexane and chloroform fractions showed inhibitory activity against the pathogen and resulted in 77-93% and 80-96% reduction in...

Management of Ascochyta rabiei by Chenopodium album Extracts Planta Daninha
SHERAZI,A.Z.; JABEEN,K.; IQBAL,S.; YOUSAF,Z..
ABSTRACT Chenopodium album, leaves were selected to evaluate their antifungal potential against Ascochyta rabiei causative agent for chickpea blight. Different concentrations of methanolic extract of C. album leaves i.e. 1%, 2.5%, 4%, 5.5% and 7% were tested against the target fungus A. rabiei. Maximum reduction in the test fungal biomass (68%) was observed in 7% concentration. This methanolic leaf extract was partitioned and n-butanol, chloroform, n-hexane, ethyl acetate fractions were isolated according to their polarity. In vitro antifungal activity of these fractions was studied by serial dilution method. n-hexane fraction exhibited the highest antifungal potential with 55% inhibition in test fungal biomass, so this fraction was selected for Gas...

Antioxidant capacity of several Iranian, wild and cultivated strains of the button mushroom BJM
Tajalli,Faezeh; Malekzadeh,Khalil; Soltanian,Hadi; Janpoor,Javad; Rezaeian,Sharareh; Pourianfar,Hamid R..
The white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, is the most commonly grown mushroom in Iran; however, there is a significant shortage of research on its antioxidant activity and other medicinal properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant capacity of the methanolic extracts from four cultivated strains and four Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS)-identified, Iranian wild isolates of A. bisporus. Evaluations were made for total phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins, and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. Overall, results showed that all the wild isolates exhibited significantly lower DPPH-derived EC50, compared to the cultivated strains (p < 0.05). A relatively high relationship was observed between total phenols and...
