MICROBIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOILS UNDER AN INTEGRATED CROP-LIVESTOCK SYSTEM Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Andréa Scaramal da; Colozzi Filho,Arnaldo; Nakatani,André Shigueyoshi; Alves,Sérgio José; Andrade,Diva de Souza; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima.
Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLs) are a viable strategy for the recovery and maintenance of soil characteristics. In the present study, an ICL experiment was conducted by the Instituto Agronômico do Paraná in the municipality of Xambre, Parana (PR), Brazil, to evaluate the effects of various grazing intensities. The objective of the present study was to quantify the levels of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and soil enzymatic activity in an ICL of soybean (summer) and Brachiaria ruziziensis (winter), with B. ruziziensis subjected to various grazing intensities. Treatments consisted of varying pasture heights and grazing intensities (GI): 10, 20, 30, and 40 cm (GI-10, GI-20, GI-30, and GI-40, respectively) and a no grazing (NG) control. The microbial...

An improved method for measuring soil microbial activity by gas phase flow injection analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Doran,Gregory; Zander,Alek.
The rate of carbon dioxide production is commonly used as a measure of microbial activity in the soil. The traditional method of CO2 determination involves trapping CO2 in an alkali solution and then determining CO2 concentration indirectly by titration of the remaining alkali in the solution. This method is still commonly employed in laboratories throughout the world due to its relative simplicity and the fact that it does not require expensive, specific equipment. However, there are several drawbacks: the method is time-consuming, requires large amounts of chemicals and the consistency of results depends on the operator's skills. With this in mind, an improved method was developed to analyze CO2 captured in alkali traps, which is cheap and relatively...

Industrial and urban organic wastes increase soil microbial activity and biomass Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Boechat,Cácio Luiz; Santos,Jorge Antonio Gonzaga; Accioly,Adriana Maria de Aguiar; Bomfim,Marcela Rebouças; Santos,Adailton Conceição dos.
Microbial processes have been used as indicators of soil quality, due to the high sensitivity to small changes in management to evaluate, e.g., the impact of applying organic residues to the soil. In an experiment in a completely randomized factorial design 6 x 13 + 4, (pot without soil and residue or absolute control) the effect of following organic wastes was evaluated: pulp mill sludge, petrochemical complex sludge, municipal sewage sludge, dairy factory sewage sludge, waste from pulp industry and control (soil without organic waste) after 2, 4, 6, 12, 14, 20, 28, 36, 44, 60, 74, 86, and 98 days of incubation on some soil microbial properties, with four replications. The soil microbial activity was highly sensitive to the carbon/nitrogen ratio of the...

Microbial soil quality indicators under different crop rotations and tillage management Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Ferreira,Enderson Petrônio de Brito; Santos,Henrique Pereira dos; Costa,Janaina Ribeiro; De-Polli,Helvécio; Rumjanek,Norma Gouvêa.
An experiment was carried out under field conditions to assess the effects of soil management (no-tillage- NT and conventional tillage- CT) and crop rotation systems on microbial biomass-C (Cmic), basal soil respiration (BSR), metabolic quotient (qCO2), soil organic carbon content (Corg) and microbial carbon to organic carbon ratio (Cmic/Corg). Soil samples were collected on an area cultivated with wheat as winter crop and soybean as summer crop, both in rotation with vetch, maize and oats. Samples were also collected in a secondary forest used as reference. Data of each management system (NT and CT) were compared to forest area by "t" test (p<0.05) and crop rotations were compared by Tukey test (p<0.05). All data were submitted to multivariate...

Seasonal fluctuations of bacterial population and microbial activity in soils cultivated with eucalyptus and pinus Scientia Agricola
Rigobelo,Everlon Cid; Nahas,Ely.
The accumulation and decomposition of litter in soils under forests depend on climatic and biotic conditions. This work evaluated the effect of monthly rainfall and temperature on total bacteria, and on the dehydrogenase and respiration microbial activities. The effects of organic matter, total organic C and soil moisture were also evaluated. Performed from April, 1999 to March, 2000 in an Eucalyptus-cultivated and Pinus-cultivated Oxisol (Typic Haplustox), the study showed that climate and the soil variables affect the total number of bacteria and the microbial activities. The highest air temperatures and rainfall intensities were found during the Summer and, consequently, all the studied variables were maximal during this period. Minimal values varied...

Glucose mineralization in soils of contrasting textures under application of S-metolachlor, terbuthylazine, and mesotrione, alone and in a mixture Bragantia
Mendes,Kassio Ferreira; Collegari,Stella Andressa; Pimpinato,Rodrigo Floriano; Tornisielo,Valdemar Luiz.
ABSTRACT Microbial adaptation may occur in surface soils under agricultural uses exposed to herbicides. However, little is known about herbicide mixture effects in the soil, especially in tropical regions like Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate glucose mineralization in soils of contrasting textures (sandy clay and sandy loam) from areas cultivated with maize under application of S-metolachlor, terbuthylazine and mesotrione, alone and in a mixture. The methodology was established according to the soil microorganisms: carbon transformation test with 14C-glucose solution (D-[U-14C] glucose) in biometric flasks. After the addition of 14C-glucose, the amount of 14C in cumulative CO2 of microbial respiration was measured several times during the...

Water type and irrigation time effects on microbial metabolism of a soil cultivated with Bermuda-grass Tifton 85 BABT
Nogueira,Sandra Furlan; Paula,Alessandra Monteiro de; Pereira,Bruno Fernando Faria; Salemi,Luiz Felippe; Fonseca,Adriel Ferreira da; Montes,Célia Regina; Victoria,Reynaldo Luiz.
This study investigated the microbial metabolism in Bermuda-grass Tifton 85 areas after potable-water and effluent irrigation treatments. The experiment was carried out in Lins/SP with samples taken in the rainy and dry seasons (2006) after one year and three years of irrigation management, and set up on an entirely randomized block design with four treatments: C (control, without irrigation or fertilization), PW (potable water + 520 kg of N ha-1 year-1); TE3 and TE0 (treated effluent + 520 kg of N ha-1 year-1) for three years and one year, respectively. The parameters determined were: microbial biomass carbon, microbial activity, and metabolic quotient. Irrigation with wastewater after three years indicated no alteration in soil quality for C and ET3; for...

Microbial respiration and chemical composition of different sediment fractions in waterbodies of the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil BJB
THOMAZ,S. M.; PEREIRA,G.; PAGIORO,T. A..
Four size fractions of the sediment of six environments of the upper Paraná River floodplain were analyzed for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents and microbial respiration (oxygen consumption). Particle size did not affect nitrogen and phosphorus content or microbial activity, but did affect carbon content (F = 4.274, df = 3; 20, p = 0.020). The carbon concentration of ultra-fine particles was significantly lower than that of other sizes of sediment particles. Microbial respiration values were well predicted by sediment chemical composition, as shown by multiple regression (microbial respiration = -0.39 - 0.210C + 0.108N + 0.796P; F = 7.0495, p = 0.0022). However, phosphorus was the element which best explained the microbial respiration (partial...
