Beyond protein intake: bushmeat as source of micronutrients in the Amazon Ecology and Society
van Vliet, Nathalie; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); vanvlietnathalie@yahoo.com; Schor, Tatiana; Geography Department, Universidade Federal do Amazonas; tschor@ufam.edu.br; Tellez, Leady; Independent consultant; leadyjot@hotmail.com.
Wild meat is critical for the food security and income of millions of people, especially for poor rural households. Its role as a primary source of macronutrients worldwide has been recognized, but there have been few attempts to evaluate the contribution of bushmeat consumption to micronutrient intake. This is so particularly in the context of nutritional transitions induced by modernization and globalization. Here, we calculated the role of bushmeat as a source of micronutrients in the diets of urban and peri-urban inhabitants within the Tres Fronteras (Peru, Brazil, Colombia) region in the Amazon. We gathered food intake data from 35 households using 3-day 24-h food recalls combined with food weighing. Additionally, we interviewed 105 households on food...

Evolution of Forest Systems: the Role of Biogeochemical Cycles in Determining Sustainable Forestry Practices Ecology and Society
Flueck, Werner T.; National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), Argentina; Institute of Natural Resources Analysis, Universidad Atlantida Argentina; Swiss Tropical Institute, University of Basel; wtf@deerlab.org.
The exploitation of natural resources such as forests leads to sustainable forest management (SFM). The key question is how to define and parametrize “sustainable use.” Promoting forest use that conserves spatial characteristics of forest landscapes and the structure and composition of forest stands was proposed as a way of maintaining elements of biodiversity such as species richness and genetic variation. However, to establish the parameter space for sustainable forest use, it is essential to consider the nutrient requirements of forest systems, that is, plants and animals, the need for fertilizer application, and the effects on biogeochemical cycles, a cornerstone of biological evolution and, thus, biodiversity. The use of forest...

Developing Autonomous Observing Systems for Micronutrient Trace Metals ArchiMer
Grand, Maxime M.; Laes, Agathe; Fietz, Susanne; Resing, Joseph A.; Obata, Hajime; Luther, George W.; Tagliabue, Alessandro; Achterberg, Eric P.; Middag, Rob; Tovar-sánchez, Antonio; Bowie, Andrew R..
Trace metal micronutrients are integral to the functioning of marine ecosystems and the export of particulate carbon to the deep ocean. Although much progress has been made in mapping the distributions of metal micronutrients throughout the ocean over the last 30 years, there remain information gaps, most notable during seasonal transitions and in remote regions. The next challenge is to develop in situ sensing technologies necessary to capture the spatial and temporal variabilities of micronutrients characterized with short residence times, highly variable source terms, and sub-nanomolar concentrations in open ocean settings. Such an effort will allow investigation of the biogeochemical processes at the necessary resolution to constrain fluxes, residence...

Chemical attributes of a Hapludox soil after nine years of pig slurry application PAB
Veiga,Milton da; Pandolfo,Carla Maria; Balbinot Junior,Alvadi Antonio; Spagnollo,Evandro.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the pig slurry application effects on chemical attributes of a Hapludox soil managed under no-tillage system. Treatments consisted of 50, 100 and 200 m³ ha-1 per year of pig slurry application, and a control with replacement of P and K exported through harvested grains. Attributes related to soil chemical reaction, exchange complex, and nutrient contents were determined in soil samples collected in the ninth year of experimentation from 0 - 0.025, 0.025 - 0.05, 0.05 - 0.10, 0.10 - 0.20, 0.20 - 0.40 and 0.40 - 0.60 m soil depths. The continuous application of high doses of pig slurry on the Oxisol surface under no-tillage acidifies the soil and increases Al, P, Cu, and Zn contents down to 0.2-m depth, and K levels...

Impact of Off-farm Income on Food Security and Nutrition in Nigeria AgEcon
Babatunde, Raphael O.; Qaim, Matin.
Reducing food insecurity in the developing world continues to be a major public policy challenge, and one that is complicated by the lack of a generalized comprehensive strategy for dealing with it. Around 854 million people are undernourished worldwide, many more suffer from micronutrient deficiencies, and the absolute numbers tend to increase further, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recent food price hikes have contributed to greater public awareness of hunger related problems, also resulting in new international commitments to invest in developing country agriculture. Whereas agriculture-led growth played an important role in reducing food insecurity and transforming the economies of many Asian and Latin American countries, the same has not yet...

Food Demand Analysis: A New Approach AgEcon
Di Giuseppe, Stefania.
In this paper a method to examine how households make their food choice considering micronutrients through utility theory is applied. The findings support the argument that nutrients play an important roles in the demand for food. The method is illustrated using the raw data EIH 2000/2001 (Enquesta Integrata de Hogares) for a set of different food groups.

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You: Micronutrient Content and Fungal Contamination of Foods in Developing Countries AgEcon
Hoffmann, Vivian.
The negative effects of micronutrient deficiencies on human capital acquisition and economic productivity are well documented. A less well understood but potentially serious threat to human health in developing countries is the contamination of food crops by fungal toxins. This paper surveys what is known about the health and economic burdens attributable to insufficient micronutrients and toxic contamination of food in developing countries, discusses consumer demand for micronutrients and food safety, and describes some of the challenges to improving population nutrition, particularly in rural areas.

Soil Fertility and Electrical Conductivity Affected by Organic Waste Rates and Nutrient Inputs Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Carmo,Davi Lopes do; Lima,Laís Botelho de; Silva,Carlos Alberto.
ABSTRACT The composition of organic waste (OW) and its effect on soil processes may change soil fertility and electrical conductivity (EC). The side effects of waste use in crop fertilization are poorly understood for Brazilian soils. This study examined the effect of the addition of 15 different organic wastes to Oxisols and a Neosol on pH, base saturation, EC, cation exchange capacity (CEC at pH 7), and the availability of Al, macro (P, K, Ca2+, Mg2+ and S) and micronutrients (B, Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+). Soil samples (150 g) were treated with chicken, pig, horse, cattle, and quail manures, sewage sludge 1 and 2, eucalyptus sawdust, plant substrate, coconut fiber, pine bark, coffee husk, peat, limed compost, and biochar. Wastes were added considering a...

Utilization of Boron (10B) derived from fertilizer by sugar cane Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Franco,Henrique Coutinho Junqueira; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze; Vitti,André César; Otto,Rafael; Faroni,Carlos Eduardo; Tovajar,João Gabriel.
The response to B in agricultural systems of sugar cane is still an unexplored issue; B application has however recently been widely publicized and used with a certain degree of frequency. The use of 10B-labeled fertilizers may further contribute to clarify this practice. With the objective of evaluating sugar cane use of B (10B) derived from fertilizer (boric acid), an experiment was conducted under field conditions in the 2005/2006 growing season. The experiment consisted of the installation of microplots (2 x 1.5 m) where 4 kg ha-1 B (boric acid with 85.95 % in 10B atoms) dissolved in water was applied 90 days after planting (May 2005). The solution was applied to the soil on both sides of the plant row at a distance of 20 cm. After harvest (June 2006)...

Extractants to assess zinc phytoavailability in mineral fertilizer and industrial by-products Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Souza,Camila Prado Cenciani de; Abreu,Cleide Aparecida de; Andrade,Cristiano Alberto de; Abreu,Mônica Ferreira de.
Efficient analytical methods for the quantification of plant-available Zn contained in mineral fertilizers and industrial by-products are fundamental for the control and marketing of these inputs. In this sense, there are some doubts on the part of the scientific community as well as of the fertilizer production sector, whether the extractor requested by the government (Normative Instruction No. 28, called 2nd extractor), which is citric acid 2 % (2 % CA) (Brasil, 2007b), is effective in predicting the plant availability of Zn via mineral fertilizers and about the agronomic significance of the required minimal solubility of 60 % compared to the total content (HCl) (Brasil, 2007a). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alternative extractors DTPA,...
