Bokashi is fermented organic compost capable of improving the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the soils. The compost action in the agricultural production system is influenced by its preparation, resulting in products with different physicochemical characteristics. The study aimed to characterize bokashi produced on-farm and compare it with commercial products. The produced composts in southern Brazil were obtained through efficient microorganisms (EM), collected in an area of permanent preservation, and kefir. Two commercial composts were used for comparison (Plantae FertTM and Bokashi Sementes BrasilTM). Physical characteristics related to apparent specific gravity, water content, and water retention capacity and chemical characteristics...

Plant- and microbial-based mechanisms to improve the agronomic effectiveness of phosphate rock: a review Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arcand,Melissa M.; Schneider,Kim D..
Deficiency in plant-available phosphorus is considered to be a major limiting factor to food production in many agricultural soils. Mineral resources are necessary to restore soil phosphorus content. In regions where conventional fertilizers are not used due to cost limitations or to mitigate adverse environmental effects, local sources of phosphate rock are being increasingly recognized for potential use as alternative phosphorus fertilizers. The main obstacle associated with using directly applied ground phosphate rock is that the phosphate released is often unable to supply sufficient plant-available phosphorus for crop uptake. Plantand microbial-based mechanisms are low-cost, appropriate technologies to enhance the solubilization and increase the...

Absorption efficiency in post-larvae of the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei fed a diet of marine yeast from mangrove mudflats Boletín de Investigaciones
Solorzano-Reyes,Fulvia; Velásquez-López,Patricio C..
ABSTRACT The present study investigated marine yeast as a food source in the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Yeast absorption efficiency was determined by measuring the proportion of organic matter assimilated by shrimp post-larvae (PLs). The yeast was isolated and propagated in the laboratory from a sediment sample obtained from a mangrove mudflat. Shrimp post-larvae at six stages, from PL-5-days-old to PL-35-days-old were fed exclusively with yeasts, at three concentrations (1.5 × 105, 3 × 105, 5 × 105cell/mL). The overall average of yeast absorption was around 65.85 ± 11.42 %. The two-way analysis of variance ANOVA (p < 0.05) showed that the efficiency of yeast absorption was not affected by the concentrations of yeasts as a food source:...

Benefits Associated with the Interaction of Endophytic Bacteria and Plants BABT
Santos,Miriam Langner dos; Berlitz,Diouneia Lisiane; Wiest,Shana Leticia Felice; Schünemann,Rogerio; Knaak,Neiva; Fiuza,Lidia Mariana.
ABSTRACT The endophytic bacteria belong to a larger group of microorganisms that have their life-cycle partly or entirely inside the plant and are located in intra and inter-cellular spaces or in the vascular tissue. These bacteria can be found colonizing aerial parts or roots. This review aims to analyze the colonization strategies of endophytic bacteria through interaction with plants, as well as to highlight the metabolic influence of these organisms in plant tissues, which result in physiological and biochemical changes. Depending on the different mechanisms used internally to colonize a plant, these microorganisms are called obligate, facultative, or passive endophytes. Phytostimulation, biofertilization and biological control are mechanisms that...

Ultrasound efficiency in relation to sodium hypochlorite and filtration adsorption in microbial elimination in a water treatment plant BABT
Bello,Antonio Roberto Crystal; Angelis,Dejanira de Franceschi; Domingos,Roberto Naves.
Processes like ultrasound, chlorination and filtration-adsorption were compared to eliminate microorganisms and to adjust established parameters of public drinking water. A mini water treatment plant (WTP-CB), in pilot scale, was projected and built to evaluate each process influence as: decontamination, coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. Total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and heterotrophic bacteria and physic/chemical parameters were quantified from water. Ultrasound, chlorination and filtration-adsorption were efficient to inactivate and/or eliminate bacteria. Ultrasound decontamination in addition to coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation and filtration, could be considered as an alternative treatment water solution where...

Production of gaba (γ - aminobutyric acid) by microorganisms: a review BJM
Dhakal,Radhika; Bajpai,Vivek K.; Baek,Kwang-Hyun.
GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) is a four carbon non-protein amino acid that is widely distributed in plants, animals and microorganisms. As a metabolic product of plants and microorganisms produced by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid, GABA functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain that directly affects the personality and the stress management. A wide range of traditional foods produced by microbial fermentation contain GABA, in which GABA is safe and eco-friendly, and also has the possibility of providing new health-benefited products enriched with GABA. Synthesis of GABA is catalyzed by glutamate decarboxylase, therefore, the optimal fermentation condition is mainly based on the biochemical properties of the enzyme. Major GABA producing...
