Abstract The effects of physiological and management factors on the milk composition of Rambouillet ewes under confined management at the Sheep Unit, Agronomy Faculty, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, México, were evaluated. Two treatments were randomly assigned to 45 single and twin-rearing ewes, 2-5 years old: 6 and 8 weeks of lactation, which were the dates when the lambs were weaned. Milk samples were taken during lactation (weeks 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12), and chemically analyzed using standard laboratory procedures for protein, fat, total solids, ash and lactose percentages. Statistical analysis was performed utilizing a model that included the fixed effects of lambing number (LN: 1-3+), birth type (BT: single, twins), lamb sex (LS: ram lambs, ewe... |

The majority of the dairy products imported by the United States are intermediate products used in food processing. As such, they are demanded for their components such as milk fat and protein. The implications of the U.S. tariff structure for import demand must be viewed in terms of the tariff's effects upon the relative prices of imported milk components. In this article we examine the implications of the current tariff structure and proposed changes under the Doha Round of international trade negotiations at the World Trade Organization. We show that implicit ad valorem equivalent tariffs (AVEs) on components vary substantially under the current tariff schedule. Proposed changes under the Doha Round would lead to not only a reduction in the level of... |

To determine the effects of a number of non-genetic factors on milk components and estimate their indirect relationships with weaning weight (WW205), the percentages of protein, fat, lactose and solids non-fat in Charolais cows from Mexico were estimated. Lactation period (LP) and calving season (CS) had significant effects on protein and fat, whereas lactose and solids non-fat were only affected by the LP. Sire line and age of the dam had significant effects on calf birth weight, while CS affected WW205. Residual correlations between milk components and WW205 suggest a low but significant correlation with lactose. These results demonstrate the importance of several non-genetic factors on the composition of milk from Charolais cows managed under extensive... |

ABSTRACT The current pricing process of raw milk in Brazil discourages producers from improving milk composition, which affects both yield and quality of dairy products. Furthermore, small and medium-sized dairies face great difficulties when it comes to planning production. Thus, a linear programming model was developed to price the raw milk and determine the optimal mix (combination of quantities) of dairy products that maximizes total contribution margin (TCM) under daily scenarios of high (January) and low (July) raw milk supplies (summer and winter, respectively) by comparing optimal solutions with actual results. The TCM of optimal and actual mixes were higher in January due to the greater availability of raw material. Packaging was a limiting factor... |
