IMPACT OF PHASING OUT MILK QUOTAS ON STRUCTURE AND PRODUCTION OF FINNISH DAIRY SECTOR AgEcon

We evaluate impacts of milk quota abolition in Finland where production costs and producer price of milk are among the highest in the EU. We analyse several price scenarios for dairy products corresponding to 10-30% reductions in raw milk prices in the EU following milk quota expansion of 2% per year. The sector model includes 18 dairy products and regions and other agricultural activities. Armington -assumption is used in modelling foreign trade. Trade of milk quotas and structural change are endogenous in the model. The results suggest that 10-15% reductions in the EU milk prices would result in less than 10% decrease in Finnish dairy production. Investments to large farm units would still increase. However, if the EU milk prices decreased by 15-20%...

Dairy Farm Size Distribution in East and West: Evolution and Sensitivity to Structural and Policy Variables: Case-Studies of the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Hungary AgEcon

This paper analyses the dynamics in the farm size distribution for The Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Hungary. A (non-)stationary Markov model approach is used. The transition probabilities are explained by a set of exogenous (policy) variables. The models are estimated using an information theoretical approach, including non-sample (prior) information. The models can be used to simulate the impact of alternative dairy policies on the dairy sector structure. For all countries there is an autonomous decline in farm numbers over time (implying increase in average farm size). This trend continues irrespective of the EU dairy policy type. For both Hungary and Poland the role of the subsistence sector is expected to substantially decrease over time.

Las cuotas lecheras en Espana: analisis estructural comparado de los efectos en su gestion AgEcon

RESUMEN: La reestructuración que acompaña al régimen de cuotas en España, que pudo tener un sesgo más propio, sigue en sus resultados pautas de otros países de la UE. La trayectoria del proceso es similar a la de Alemania o Francia. Sin embargo, en cuanto al patrón para la gestión de las cuotas se ha venido inclinando hacia el esquema flexible del Reino Unido y Holanda, incluso regionalizando de facto el tráfico de cuotas, pues las transacciones entre CC.AA. están sometidas a fuertes limitaciones administrativas. En España el sistema de estado ha propiciado un escenario como el francés o el alemán, pero obtenido de esa gestión liberal de las cuotas según los modelos británico y holandés. Más que la desvinculación de cuota y tierra, han jugado los intereses...
