México es centro de origen, domesticación y diversificación del frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) y maíz (Zea mays L.). Ambas especies han sido importantes desde la época prehispánica, y la diversidad fenotípica y genética de ambos cultivos es conservada en forma de poblaciones nativas cultivadas por los agricultores en la actualidad. En la región suroriental del estado de México, el sistema de producción “milpa” se practica en la actualidad, con base en una gran diversidad de poblaciones nativas de frijol común de crecimiento indeterminado cultivadas en asociación con maíz. Shifting cultivation systems, one of the most widely distributed forms of agriculture in the tropics, provide not only crops of cultural significance, but also medicinal, edible, ritual, fuel, and forage resources, which contribute to the livelihoods, health, and cultural identity of local people. In many regions across the globe, shifting cultivation systems are undergoing important changes, one of the most pervasive being a shortening of the fallow cycle.
