Development of a functional approach in a grassland vegetation - DOI: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v30i2.4679 Animal Sciences
Sosinski Junior, Enio Egon; UFRGS; Carrère, Pascal; Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique; Louault, Frédérique; Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique; Soussana, Jean-François; Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique.
To improve our understanding of grassland dynamics under different levels of utilization, a functional description of the vegetation was introduced in a deterministic model. The selected traits and their parameterization were based on the results of a long-term experiment in which temperate grasslands were managed for 12 years with three levels of herbage use: high, medium and low. The integration of functional attributes of the community species within the model’s parameters can be seen as a new step in the study of the grassland ecosystem. With this tool, it is possible to decrease the number of interconnections in the system and consequently decrease the complexity. In this work a, functional definition of three different grassland communities was...

Post-fire regeneration of vegetation on sandy oligotrophic soil, in Itabaiana, Sergipe, Brazil Biological Sciences
Dantas, Túlio Vinicius Paes; Ribeiro, Adauto de Souza; Sampaio, Everardo Valadares de Sá Barretto; Araújo, Elcida de Lima.
Two models of post-disturbance regeneration of vegetation in areas of oligotrophic soils have been proposed for temperate regions. The first model is characterized by rapid recovery of the floristic composition, due to the fire resistance of plants; while in the second model, the fire causes extensive mortality and the recovery occurs by recruitment from the seed bank. Since these models have been rarely tested in tropical oligotrophic environments, we applied them in the analysis of floristic compositions in three areas with different post-fire regeneration times in Sergipe State, Brazil. The regeneration followed the seed bank recruitment model in places of bare ground, with a progressive increase in plant density and changes in the relative abundance...

Effect of moisture content on engineering properties of sorghum grains CIGR Journal
Gely, Maria Cristina; Pagano, Ana María.
Moisture constitutes one of the most influential factors in the conservation of sorghum grains during storage due to their relationship with the biological factors that cause postharvest damage, affecting the nutritional and economic values. For this reason it is important to evaluate the effect of moisture content on the physical characteristics of the grain in order to establish the design and operation conditions of the post-harvest processes. Accordingly, the aim of this work is to analyze the dependence on moisture content of physical properties of technological interest for the post-harvest grain sorghum stages.Experimental results show that the moisture significantly affects the properties width, thickness, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, bulk...

Determination of Physical and Aerodynamic Characteristics of African Olive (Canarium Schweinfurthii) Nut CIGR Journal
Obi, Okey Francis; Ijere, Chimuanya Emeka; Okechukwu, Michael Emeka.
This study investigated the physical and aerodynamic properties of African olive (Canarium schweinfurthii) nuts. The nut mass frequency was identified and three fractions of the nut were defined to determine their properties. Generally, it was observed that the physical and aerodynamic characteristics of the nut were significantly influenced by the unit mass. Comparison of means revealed that the mean values of the nut physical and aerodynamic properties were significantly different between fractions at p<0.05 except for the true density. The static angle of repose appeared higher than the dynamic angle of repose for all the nut fractions. The coefficient of static friction of the nut fractions on different material surfaces was highest on plywood and...

Distribution and conservation of Aniba Aubl. (Lauraceae Jussieu) species in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Franciscon,Carlos Henrique; Miranda,Izildinha de Souza.
Abstract: This study conducts a biogeographical review of Aniba in Brazil, including its actual and potential distribution, and a review on the species conservation status. The potential distribution of each Aniba species was modeled using the Brazilian Plants and Fungi Biogeography system, which is interconnected with the SpeciesLink network. A consensus model based on up to five algorithms was used to model the potential distribution of each species. The endemism, conservation status and rarity of each species in Brazil were also analyzed. A total of 3059 records of 30 Brazilian Aniba species were found. In total, 16.1% of the records were excluded because of the lack of valid names, and 53.4% were excluded because of the lack of georeference and name of...

Modelling and Optimisation of Stabilisation Ponds System for the Treatment of Swine Wastes: organic Matter Evaluation BABT

Simple models for the continuous aerobic biodegradation of phenol in a packed bed reactor BABT
Gerrard,Andrew Mark; Páca Júnior,Jan; Kostecková,Alena; Páca,Jan; Stiborová,Marie; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo.
This paper proposes the use of a preliminary, phenol removal step to reduce peak loads arriving at a conventional effluent plant. A packed bed reactor (PBR) using polyurethane foam, porous glass and also cocoa fibres as the inert support material was used. Experiments have been carried out where the flow-rates, plus inlet and outlet phenol concentrations were measured. A simple, plug-flow model is proposed to represent the results. Zero, first order, Monod and inhibited kinetics rate equations were evaluated. It was found that the Monod model gave the best fit to the experimental data and allowed linear graphs to be plotted. The Monod saturation constant, K, is approximately 50 g m-3, and ka is around 900 s-1.

A model for the study of skeletal anomalies in rat fetuses BABT
Effting,Cristiane; Paula,Daniel Jesus de; Nunes Junior,Guilhermino Pereira.
The aim of this study was to validate a model of skeletal anomalies in rat fetuses by the administration of ketoconazole (80 mg/kg) to pregnant rats during organogenesis. Bones of the head, trunk and anterior and posterior limbs were examined for detection of anomalies. Statistical differences regarding the number of fetuses and postimplantation resorptions, and fetal and placental weight were significant. The frequency of skeletal anomalies in the head, trunk, and anterior and posterior limbs in the ketoconazole-treated group were also significant when compared to the control group. It could be concluded that the model suggested was valid for study of skeletal anomalies and abnormal bones development in rat fetuse, in spite of the loss of fetuses due to...

Predicting biological parameters of estuarine benthic communities using models based on environmental data BABT
Rosa-Filho,José Souto; Bemvenuti,Carlos Emílio; Elliott,Michael.
This study aimed to predict the biological parameters (species composition, abundance, richness, diversity and evenness) of benthic assemblages in southern Brazil estuaries using models based on environmental data (sediment characteristics, salinity, air and water temperature and depth). Samples were collected seasonally from five estuaries between the winter of 1996 and the summer of 1998. At each estuary, samples were taken in unpolluted areas with similar characteristics related to presence or absence of vegetation, depth and distance from the mouth. In order to obtain predictive models, two methods were used, the first one based on Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA), and the second based on Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). Models using MDA had...

An assessment of volume-ratio functions for Eucalyptus globulus and E. nitens in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gilabert,Horacio; Paci,Carlos.
Volume-ratio and total volume models for Eucalyptus nitens and E. globulus grown in southern Chile were ftted independently. The validation process considered the bias and the total error in the volume estimates, as well as the age classes close to thinning and harvesting operations. Volume estimates from the system of functions (volume and ratio) were compared to the volume estimates from a taper function (Bruce model) to estimate the volume at different top stem diameters. The results indicated that general (as opposed to local) logarithmic functions performed better in their estimation of the total volume for both species, while a unique polynomial model was the best model for the ratio estimates for both Eucalyptus species. The system of functions...

Optimization of microwave drying conditions of two banana varieties using response surface methodology Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Omolola,Adewale Olusegun; Jideani,Afam Israel Obiefuna; Kapila,Patrick Francis; Jideani,Victoria Adaora.
AbstractOptimization of microwave drying conditions of Luvhele and Mabonde banana varieties were studied using response surface methodology. The drying was performed using a central composite rotatable design for two variables: microwave power level (100, 200 and 300 W) and drying time (40, 26, and 12 min.) for Luvhele; (100, 200 and 300 W) and (42, 27, and 12 min) for Mabonde. The colour and texture (hardness) data were analyzed using ANOVA and regression analysis. The fitness of the models obtained was good as the lack of fit for each of the models was not significant. The coefficient of determination R2 of the models was relatively high, hence the models obtained for the responses were adequate and acceptable. Drying conditions of 178.76 W, 12 min....

Grasshopper Population Ecology: Catastrophe, Criticality, and Critique Ecology and Society
Lockwood, Dale R; Colorado State University; dale.lockwood@colostate.edu; Lockwood, Jeffrey A; University of Wyoming;.
Grasshopper population dynamics are an important part of the North American rangeland ecosystem and an important factor in the economies that derive from the rangeland. Outbreak dynamics have plagued management strategies in the rangeland, and attempts to find simple, linear and mechanistic solutions to both understanding and predicting the dynamics have proved fruitless. These efforts to ground theory in a correspondence with the “real” world, including whether the population dynamics are ultimately density dependent or density independent, have generated abundant heat but little light. We suggest that a pragmatic approach, in which theories are taken to be “tools” rather than competing claims of truth, has greater...

The long-term character of climate change and the high costs of adaptation measures, in combination with their uncertain effects, turn climate adaptation governance into a torturous process. We systematically review the literature on climate adaptation governance to analyze the scholarly understanding of these complexities. Building on governance literature about long-term and complex policy problems, we develop a conceptual matrix based on the dimensions knowledge and power to systematically study the peer-reviewed literature on climate adaptation governance. We find that about a quarter of the reviewed journal articles do not address the knowledge or power dimension of the governance of climate change adaptation, about half of the articles discuss either...

An Immune System Perspective on Ecosystem Management Ecology and Society
Janssen, Marco A; Indiana University; maajanss@indiana.edu.
A new perspective for studying the complex interactions between human activities and ecosystems is proposed. It is argued that biological immune systems share a number of similarities with ecological economic systems in terms of function. These similarities include the system's ability to recognize harmful invasions, design measures to control and destroy these invasions, and remember successful response strategies. Studying both the similarities and the differences between immune systems and ecological economic systems can provide new insights on ecosystem management.

Adaptive Ecosystem Management in the Pacific Northwest: a Case Study from Coastal Oregon Ecology and Society
Gray, Andrew N; U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station; agray01@fs.fed.us.
Adaptive ecosystem management has been adopted as a goal for decision making by several of the land management and regulatory agencies of the U.S. government. One of the first attempts to implement ecosystem management was undertaken on the federally managed forests of the Pacific Northwest in 1994. In addition to a network of reserve areas intended to restore habitat for late-successional terrestrial and aquatic species, "adaptive management areas" (AMAs) were established. These AMAs were intended to be focal areas for implementing innovative methods of ecological conservation and restoration and meeting economic and social goals. This paper analyzes the primary ecological, social, and institutional issues of concern to one AMA in the Coast Range in...
