Supplementation of broiler breeders with fat sources and vitamin e: carry over effect on performance, carcass yield, and meat quality offspring Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fernandes,J.I.M.; Bordignon,H.L.F.; Prokoski,K.; Kosmann,R.C.; Vanroo,E.; Murakami,A.E..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate two sources of oil (soybean and fish) and four additional levels of vitamin E (0, 150, 250 and 350mg/kg diet) in breeder diets between the 42nd and 56th week of age and its effect on performance and meat quality of offspring. The supplementation of fish oil in the maternal diet increased the deposition of DHA and CLA in egg yolk. From 1 to 35 days of age, intermediate levels of vitamin E resulted in lower weight gain and feed intake. To feed conversion, the best result was obtained supplementing the maternal diet with soybean oil, regardless of vitamin inclusion. In addition, the evaluation of meat quality, the fish oil-supplemented-diet resulted in lower moisture loss of the breast fillets. For maternal diet...

Water loss in table grapes: model development and validation under dynamic storage conditions Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
PEREIRA,Ericsem; SILVA,Renata Gonçalves Broco e; SPAGNOL,Wigberto Antonio; SILVEIRA JUNIOR,Vivaldo.
Abstract Water loss is a critical problem affecting the quality of table grapes. Temperature and relative humidity (RH) are essential in this process. Although mathematical modelling can be applied to measure constant temperature and RH impacts, it is proved that variations in storage conditions are normally encountered in the cold chain. This study proposed a methodology to develop a weight loss model for table grapes and validate its predictions in non-constant conditions of a domestic refrigerator. Grapes were maintained under controlled conditions and the weight loss was measured to calibrate the model. The model described the water loss process adequately and the validation tests confirmed its predictive ability. Delayed cooling tests showed that...

Application of carnauba-based wax maintains postharvest quality of 'Ortanique' tangor Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Machado,Francisca Ligia de Castro; Costa,José Maria Correia; Batista,Emanuele Nogueira.
This study aimed at evaluating compositional changes in the quality of 'Ortanique' tangor after coating with the carnauba-based waxes Aruá Tropical® or Star Light®. The storage conditions studied simulated those of local marketing (22 ± 2 °C, 60 ± 5% RH). Non-destructive analysis, mass loss, peel color, and sensory evaluation, were performed upon coating and every three days up to the fifteenth day of storage. Destructive analysis, peel moisture content, chlorophyll of the peel, pulp color, juice content, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), pH, and soluble solids to titratable acidity ratio, were performed upon coating and every four days up to the sixteenth day of storage. The assay was conducted using an entirely randomized design, with three...
