The full exploitation of the world fishery resources has drastically modified the prospects and conditions for progress in fisheries. It was detenninant in the change of the Ocean Regime. Moreover, it widened considerably the range of issues which have to be addressed for an efficient use of marine living resources. Assessment approaches for complex fisheries, carrying capacity of basins and management of bivalve mollusc stocks, natural variability of fish stocks and management implications, methods for access regulation, economic rent, resources and use rights allocation, nature of aitisanal fisheries, strategies for fishery development in Third World countries, international dimensions of fisheries, etc. are among the issues reviewed in this book by... |

Electrophoretic analysis of eight polymorphic loci in 23 mixed or monospecific populations of Cepaea nemoralis and Cepaea hortensis indicates important genetic dissimilarities between Breton and Pyrenean areas. The concordance between groups of samples and various latitudinal or altitudinal zones suggests that the influence of climatic factors could be involved. Founder effects also seem to increase the differentiation in some populations; the lower genetic variability in three pyrenean samples probably submitted to frequent extinctions could illustrate this process. Nevertheless, divergences corresponding to plurispecific samples suppose the absence of interactions between the two species. |

The phylogenetic relationships of the caryophyllidia-bearing dorids are studied, based on the examination of the type species of all the genera previously described. The phylogenetic hypothesis supports that the caryophyllidia-bearing dorids area monophyletic group and the sister group of the clade formed by Asteronotus Ehrenberg, 1831 and Halgerda Bergh, 1880. Several genera previously considered as valid or regarded as uncertain are here synonymized: Peronodoris Bergh, 1904, Trippa Bergh, 1877, Phlegmodoris Bergh, 1878, Petelodoris Bergh, 1881, Kentrodoris Bergh, 1876, Audura Bergh, 1878, Centrodoris P. Summer mortality of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is the result of a complex interaction between oysters, their environment, and pathogens. Heredity appears to be a major factor determining the sensitivity of oysters to summer mortality, allowing resistant (R) and susceptible (S) lines to be produced. We conducted genome-wide expression profiling of R and S gonads during the 3-month period preceding a summer mortality event, using a cDNA microarray that we designed. ANOVA analysis revealed that 34 genes were differentially expressed between R and S lines on four dates preceding the mortality event. Annotation of some of these genes highlights reproduction and its allocation and antioxidant defenses as the main pathways that operate differentially... |

Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species... |

A bibliographic review has been made on the toxicity of ten metals for some marine larvae of commercial interest. We have classified, according to toxicity, organic salts of tin, mercury, silver, copper, zinc, nickel, lead, cadmium, chromium and manganese. Some synergistic effects of metals, temperature and salinity are described as well as the action of silt suspended in water. |

Introduction: During each summer season, the IFREMER laboratory of Arcachon monitors, within the framework of the agreement with the Arcachon- Aquitaine Shellfish Farming Regional Section (SRC), the reproduction of cup oysters in the Arcachon basin. This monitoring has as its goal to furnish oyster farmers with the information needed to implement spat catches: - dates and size of egg clutches, - larvae development rate, - presence in the environment of more evolved stages (close to fixation). Reproduction was monitored between mid-June and mid-September, plankton was fished four times per week at the various sites representative of the basin. Oyster larvae at various stages are enumerated there. At the end of the reproductive season (September to... |

Global molluscan aquaculture production is continuously increasing, dominated by five species, among which the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, predominates. Hatchery production is accompanying this increase to assist consistent availability of juveniles for restocking, fishery enhancement, genetic improvements as well as for species diversification. Hatchery development contributes significantly to the demand for international transfers of live molluscs; a consequence of which pathogen transfer via transfer of live molluscs is currently recognised as a major cause of epizootic disease outbreaks. Diseases are a primary constraint to mollusc aquaculture growth and sustainability, severely impacting socioeconomic development in many countries.... |

Seafood could be a solution to meet global food demand that will double by 2050. Seafood includes a wide variety of edible marine organisms, except fish and mammals. These are molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms and algae. Like any food, seafood can involve hazards transmitted to humans through food, which affect the health of the consumer. These hazards are both biological (viruses, bacteria, parasites) and chemical (toxins, allergens, chemicals, microplastics). The exposure of populations to these hazards through seafood consumption can be notably explained by their mode of production and the dietary habits. Firstly, the sanitary quality of products reflects the quality of the aquatic environment from which they are taken, which can be contaminated by... |
