Second capture of Promops centralis (Chiroptera) in French Guiana after 28 years of mist-netting and description of its echolocation and distress calls Acta Amazonica
FROIDEVAUX,Jérémy S.P.; ROEMER,Charlotte; LEMARCHAND,Clément; MARTÍ-CARRERAS,Joan; MAES,Piet; RUFRAY,Vincent; URIOT,Quentin; URIOT,Sylvain; LÓPEZ-BAUCELLS,Adrià.
ABSTRACT The Amazonian basin harbours some of the most bat-diverse ecosystems worldwide. Yet, information on elusive, high-flying bat species such as Molossidae is scarce or virtually missing in the literature, which hampers conservation efforts both locally and globally. The recent advent of new technologies specifically designed to survey bats, such as passive ultrasound detectors and acoustic lures, has significantly increased understanding of bat ecology and distribution, and has allowed researchers to gather new and valuable information which was impossible to collect in the past. We undertook a rapid bat diversity assessment in French Guiana using acoustic lures to aid in capturing high-flying insectivorous bat species. Here we report the second and...

Bat richness (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in an area of montane Atlantic Forest in the Serra da Mantiqueira, state of Minas Gerais, southeast Brazil Biota Neotropica
Xavier,Bruna da Silva; Carvalho,William Douglas; Dias,Daniela; Tabosa,Lorena de Oliveira; Santos,Carlos Eduardo Lopes; Esbérard,Carlos Eduardo Lustosa.
Abstract: In recent years there has been an increase in research interest in remnants of Atlantic Forest above 500 m a.s.l., such as in the Serra da Mantiqueira, which is considered a priority area for conservation. The chiropterofauna of the Serra da Mantiqueira remains relatively under-studied, and here we present a list of bat species from the "Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) Cachoeira do Tombo", a private conservation unit located in an area of montane Atlantic Forest in the Serra da Mantiqueira. Bats were captured with mist nets along trails and near a diurnal roost. A total of 498 individuals of 19 bat species belonging to the families Phyllostomidae, Vespertilionidae and Molossidae were captured. Phyllostomidae were captured only...

Comparative morphology of the tongue in free-tailed bats (Chiroptera, Molossidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gregorin,Renato.
Descriptive and comparative studies on tongue of nineteen Molossidae, one Mystacinidae, and four Vespertilionidae bats species were carried out. Analysis was restricted to the external morphology, covering general shape of the tongue and its papillae. Types of papillae and their distribution presented considerable intergeneric variation, considering the strictly insectivorous feeding habits of these bats. Distribution of the data of tongue morphology is analyzed and compared with the phylogenetic schemes proposed previously and comments about evolutionary relationships among taxa were done.

Morcegos da região sul do Brasil: análise comparativa da riqueza de espécies, novos registros e atualizações nomenclaturais (Mammalia, Chiroptera) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Passos,Fernando C.; Miranda,João M. D.; Bernardi,Itiberê P.; Kaku-Oliveira,Nathalia Y.; Munster,Luana C..

New records of the rare Histiotus magellanicus (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) and other bats from Central Patagonia, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Giménez,Analía L; Giannini,Norberto P; Schiaffini,Mauro I; Martin,Gabriel M.
Histiotus magellanicus (Philippi, 1866) is a poorly known Patagonian bat. Here we report on nine newly captured specimens and one unpublished locality from museum specimen that significantly improve our knowledge of this species' distribution, by incorporating two Argentine provinces and reducing the distributional gap between northern and southern historical records. The new records confirm H. magellanicus as a Subantarctic Forests endemic. In addition, we report new specimens and localities from four poorly known Patagonian bats for Chubut province: Histiotus macrotus, Myotis chiloensis, Lasiurus varius (Vespertilionidae) and Tadarida brasiliensis (Molossidae)

The big free-tailed bat, Nyctinomops macrotis (gray, 1839), in Central America Mastozool. neotrop.
Mora,José Manuel; Espinal,Mario R; Ruedas,Luis A; López,Lucía I.

Habitat use and seasonal activity of insectivorous bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in the grasslands of southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Barros,Marília A. S.; Pessoa,Daniel M. A.; Rui,Ana Maria.
In temperate zones, insectivorous bats use some types of habitat more frequently than others, and are more active in the warmest periods of the year. We assessed the spatial and seasonal activity patterns of bats in open areas of the southernmost region of Brazil. We tested the hypothesis that bat activity differs among habitat types, among seasons, and is influenced by weather variables. We monitored four 1,500-m transects monthly, from April 2009 to March 2010. Transects corresponded to the five habitat types that predominate in the region. In each sampling session, we detected and counted bat passes with an ultrasound detector (Pettersson D230) and measured climatic variables at the transects. We recorded 1,183 bat passes, and observed the highest...

Composição de colônia e reprodução de Molossus rufus (E. Geoffroy) (Chiroptera, Molossidae) em um refúgio no sudeste do Brasil Zoologia
Esbérard,Carlos.
In this study carried out in the Biological Reserve of Poço das Antas, Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil, a roost of Molossus rufus (E. Geoffroy, 1805) was sampled one night per month, from November 2000 to October, 2001. The colonies in this species can exceed more than five hundreds, being present both sexes. The total number of animals captured was higher in the spring and declined in the autumn and winter. Between April to July the proportion of males overcome the females, while in other months the females prevailed. Molossus rufus have seasonal reproduction. Females arrived by July and the number increases until November. Few animals remained in this roost during colder months. Such fact suggests that females and great part of the males leave...
