Séquences d'évolution morphodynamique des barres intertidales d'une plage macrotidale : l'exemple d'Omaha beach (Normandie, France) ArchiMer
Stepanian, A; Levoy, F.
The present paper deals with the morphodynamics of intertidal bars on Omaha beach, a macrotidal beach located along the Normandy coastline. During two years (defined here as medium-term time-scale), a monthly topographic monitoring has been conducted on this beach. An analysis of the morphological evolution of the ridge and runnel systems is performed and correlated to the forcing conditions (waves and tide) recorded on the lower foreshore. Our results allow to distinguish some morphodynamical evolution sequences with one stage of accretion and one stage of destruction of the bars. In order to discriminate these two stages, an energetic criterion is used. Accretion stages correspond to long periods of fair weather conditions (significant wave height, H-s...

Dynamique sédimentaire multiclasse : de l’étude des processus à la modélisation en Manche ArchiMer
Blanpain, Olivier.
The purpose of this work is the implementation of a sediment transport model in the English Channel. The design of such a model requires the identification of the physical processes, their modelling and their in-situ validation. Because of the sedimentary particularities of the study area, modelling of the mechanical behaviour of a non uniform mixture of sediments and particularly of the fine grains within a coarse matrix is required. This study focused on the characterization of the relevant processes by acquisition of experimental and in-situ data. Data acquired in hydro-sedimentary conditions comparable to those found in the English Channel are scarce. A new instrument and image processing technique were specifically conceived and implemented in-situ to...

Les embouchures mésotidales (tidal inlets) et leur relation avec les littoraux adjacents - Exemple de la Barra Nova, Sud Portugal ArchiMer
Balouin, Yann.
Tidal inlets are among the most dynamic morphological features along the world coastlines. Their evolution and stability, frequently critical to the local environment, are dependent on the relative influence of longshore transport along adjacent coasts and tidal flows in the inlet. Main objective of this study was to quantify the processes involved in the inlet morphodynamics in order to determine the key parameters of these systems and to predict medium to long-term evolution. Morphology evolution (bathymetry, remote sensed video data), hydrodynamics and sediment transport measurements were analyzed to quantify the inlet dynamics. Our approach was based on the study of hydrosedimentary processes along the adjacent coastline, and inlet responses to...

Modelling sand/mud transport and morphodynamics in the Seine river mouth (France): an attempt using a process-based approach ArchiMer
Waeles, Benoit; Le Hir, Pierre; Lesueur, P; Delsinne, N.
The mouth of the Seine River estuary (France) has undergone marked morphological evolution over several decades mainly due to engineering works aimed at improving access to Rouen and Le Havre harbours. The intertidal areas are decreasing in size and the lower estuary is accumulating sediment and prograding. In order to understand and better describe the major morphological behaviours of the estuary, a morphodynamic numerical model was developed within the Seine-Aval program. At the end of the 1st part of the research program, a validated fine sediment transport model (3D) was available (Le Hir et al., 2001b). As the present morphological study addresses medium-term issues (a few decades), and because of the need to investigate impacts of local structures...

Do natural disturbances have significant effects on sandy beach macrofauna of Southeastern Brazil? Rev. Bras. Zool.
Costa,Leonardo Lopes; Machado,Phillipe Mota; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
ABSTRACT The role of morphodynamic features such as grain size, swash climate and wave action on the macrofauna of beaches are well-known. However, few studies have investigated natural disturbances as potential drivers of temporal community variations. In southeastern Brazil, we sampled the intertidal macrofauna of two sandy beaches to test whether seasonal disturbances as the frequency of storm wave events (SWE) and rainfall have significant influence on their composition and abundance. The macrofauna assemblage differed significantly between the rainy and the dry seasons, but rainfall was not the main driver of community changes, although both beaches are in the vicinity of extensive river plumes. Actually, SWE explained most macrofauna richness...

Macroinfauna of Six Beaches near Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazil BABT
Barros,Francisco; Borzone,Carlos Alberto; Rosso,Sergio.
Benthic macroinfauna of six beaches near to Guaratuba Bay, Paraná, Brazil were studied in summer and winter of 1994. Sampling stations were distributed along a transect, from upper of the drift line to depths of nearly 3 m behind the first break of the surf zone. Biological and sedimentological samples, slope, wave height and period were recorded. Subtidal samples were collected by scuba diving. The beaches varied from extremely inclined, composed of coarse sediments, to low inclined, composed of fine and very fine sands. The polychaete Scolelepis squamata, was the numerically dominant species in those beaches composed by fine to very fine sand in the subaereal profile. The echinoderm Mellita quinquiesperforata occurred in the last stations of the surf...
