Experience with Descriptors, Registration and Protection of vegetable cultivars: eggplant as a case study Horticultura Brasileira
Carvalho,Sabrina IC; Reifschneider,Francisco JB; Ribeiro,Cláudia SC; Bianchetti,Luciano B; Fernandez,Francisco L.
ABSTRACT The Registro Nacional de Cultivares [RNC (National Register of Cultivars)] and the Serviço Nacional de Proteção de Cultivares [SNPC (National Service for Cultivar Protection)] were established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) in 1997. The registration of a cultivar in the RNC allows the production, processing and commercialization of seeds in the country. The right of commercial exploitation, assured by the protection of a cultivar in the SNPC, allows the allocation of resources to public and private breeding programs, and the subsequent launching of new cultivars. The authors’ experience with the theme and its relevance to the public and private sectors provided the base for this article, thus sharing the elements...

Compatibility and ectomycorrhiza formation among Pisolithus Isolates and Eucalyptus spp Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Pereira,Olinto Liparini; Costa,Maurício Dutra; Borges,Arnaldo Chaer; Araújo,Elza Fernandes; Kasuya,Maria Catarina Megumi.
Twenty-nine isolates of the ectomycorrhiza fungus Pisolithus sp. from different geographical and host origins were tested for their ability to form ectomycorrhizae on Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla seedlings under greenhouse conditions. The ectomycorrhiza-forming capacity of isolates varied greatly from one eucalypt species to the other. All isolates from Eucalyptus, nine from Pinus spp. and two isolates from unknown hosts formed mycorrhizae with E. grandis and E. urophylla. Root colonization rates varied from 0 to 5.2 % for all Pinus isolates and those from unknown hosts. Colonization rates for these isolates were lower than those observed for Eucalyptus isolates (0.8 to 89.4 %). Three isolates from unknown hosts formed mycorrhizae with neither...

Clonal evaluation and recurrent flowering of ornamental pineapple hybrid for use as miniature potted plant Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Bruna de Fátima Batista da; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Dias,Lucas Ezequiel da Costa; Silva,Ronilze Leite da; Souza,Fernanda Vidigal Duarte.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the cloning and recurrent flowering of the miniature pineapple hybrid ORN-MUT based on quantitative and qualitative morphological descriptors for possible use as a potted plant. Besides its reduced size, the ORN-MUT hybrid is notable for its pink fruit, absence of thorns and recurrent flowering at the crown, formed after the plant's complete cycle (562 days). The hybrid was assessed in the experimental field of the Embrapa Cassava and Fruits research unit in two flowering stages (first flowering and recurrent flowering) and was characterized by quantitative and qualitative morphological descriptors. A joint analysis of the data (multivariate analysis) was performed to verify the distinguishability and...

Morphoanatomy and histochemistry analyses of cassava roots do not discriminate resistant from susceptible genotypes to soft root rot Acta Amazonica
SILVA,Jonny Lucio Sousa; MOURA,Elisa Ferreira; ILKIU-BORGES,Fernanda; GALVÃO,Jessivaldo Rodrigues; FARIAS-NETO,João Tomé de; SILVA,Gisele Barata da; RÊGO,Marcela Cristiane Ferreira; CUNHA,Roberto Lisboa.
ABSTRACT Cassava is an important culture in Brazil and in the North of the country, and soft root rot has affected root production. The aim of this work was to identify root morphoanatomic and histochemical characters associated with root rot resistance. In areas with no occurrence of the disease, nine cassava genotypes were tested, four of which were resistant, and five were susceptible to root rot. Root harvest was carried out twelve months after sowing, and thickness of suber, suber and cortex, and secondary xylem were measured. Moreover, texture, suber cell layers, lignin content, and lignin monomers content of the portion suber and cortex were analyzed. Also, histochemical tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of the roots were...

The powdery mildew caused by Oidium spp. is an important disease for several crops of the Cucurbitaceae family. Although the teleomorphs, Podosphaera xanthii and Golovinomyces cichoracearum, currently have already been described as the causal agents of powdery mildew in Brazil, only P. xanthii is considered the main causal agent of powdery mildew field epidemics. The objective of this work was to identify and determine the prevalence of the species causing powdery mildew in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and melon (Cucumis melo var. reticulatus) grown in greenhouses in the State of Paraná in Brazil. The morphological traits of the conidial stages, such as the presence of fibrosin bodies and a germinative tube, were used to identify the species. Leaves...

Comparative pollen morphological analysis in the subgenera Passiflora and Decaloba Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOARES,TALIANE L.; JESUS,ONILDO N.; SOUZA,EVERTON H.; ROSSI,MÔNICA L.; OLIVEIRA,EDER J..
ABSTRACT The genus Passiflora is the most diversified of the Passifloraceae, and its palynology presents wide morphological variability. The objective of the study was to evaluate the pollen morphology of 18 Passiflora species in order to identify informative pollinic characteristics to contribute to the taxonomic classification of the genus. The morphology of the pollen grains and the exine structure were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Differences in the pollen morphology were found in the studied species, mainly in terms of shape, pollen aperture and ornamentation pattern of the exine. Most of the species belonging to the subgenus Passiflora presented ornamented 6-syncolpate pollen grains with an oblate-spheroidal...

Organography of greenhouse and field accessions of wild Arachisspecies (section Arachis) Bragantia
Veiga,Renato Ferraz de Arruda; Faria,Leonardo de Grazia; Valls,José Francisco Montenegro; Fávero,Alessandra Pereira.
ABSTRACT Peanut or groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a globally important oilseed crop, with important nutritional qualities, and a rich source of amino acids and protein. Another 80 species have been described in the genus Arachis, 64 of which are found in Brazil, and even though their morphology and agronomic traits remain largely unknown, they have been cultivated for forage and for landscaping and have great potential for breeding with cultivated peanut. Thus, the morphological characterization of wild Arachis species is essential for their conservation and use. In this study, we present a morphological and agronomic characterization of 29 diploid accessions of eleven wild Arachis species and one of the tetraploid A. monticola (section Arachis) with A...
