Melo, Carlos Cicinato Vieira; Universidade Federal de Lavras; Reis Neto, Rafael Vilhena; Universidade Federal de Lavras; Costa, Adriano Carvalho; Universidade Federal de Lavras; Freitas, Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Universidade Federal de Lavras; Freato, Thiago Archangelo; Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais; Souza, Ulisses Nascimento de; Universidade Federal de Lavras.
The study was carried out with the objective of verifying which measures and morphometric ratios are more directly related to the body yield of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, in two weight classes. Data were analyzed from 257 specimens of tilapia divided into two weight classes: p1 = 400 to 599 g and p2 = 600 to 900 g. The morphometric measurements standard length (SL), head length (HL), body height (BH) and body width (BW), and the ratios of these measures (HL / SL, BH / SL, BW / SL, HL / BH, BW / BH, BW / HL) were evaluated. The following body yields were calculated: carcass (RCAR), fillet (RFILE) and head (RCAB). The data were initially submitted to the "stepwise" procedure to eliminate problems of multicollinearity among the morphometric...

Protein restriction during intrauterine and lactation periods: effects on testicular development in pre-puberty rats Biological Sciences
Oliveira, Jessica Santana de; Silva, Alluanan Adelson do Nascimento; Magalhães, Carolina Peixoto; Souza, Sandra Lopes de; Silva Junior, Valdemiro Amaro da; Melo, Elizabeth Neves de.
Current study investigates the effects of maternal protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation on the testis of immature rats. Female Wistar rats were mated and, after confirming pregnancy, they were divided into two groups: undernourished group (UG) fed on a diet with casein 8%, and control group (CG) fed on a diet with casein 17 %, during pregnancy and lactation. After weaning, male offspring from the two experimental groups were fed on normal diet up to 35 days old when they were euthanized. Body and testicular weights decreased in UG when compared to those in CG. Volumetric density of seminiferous tubules was higher in CG whilst intertubular space increased in UG. The number of lumenated seminiferous tubules was higher in CG than in UG. Tubular...

Combination of fixative agents and fixation times to visually differentiate the cortical from the medullary layer in bovine adrenal glands Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,FABRÍCIO S.; MACITELLI,FERNANDA; SANTOS,CAIO C.C.; BRAGA,JANAINA S.; COSTA,BARBARA C.; PASTORE,MARINA; ROCHA,THIAGO A.S.S.; COSTA,MATEUS J.R.P. DA.
Abstract Chronic stress exposure commonly increases adrenals weight and changes their morphology. This study aimed to compare four methods to delimitate the cortical and medullary layers of adrenals glands in Nelore bulls. Fresh adrenals did not present differentiation between layers. Then, frozen adrenals were distributed in plastics bags with fixative Bouin (G1), 96ºGL ethylic alcohol (G2), 10% formaldehyde (G3), or 2.5% glutaraldehyde (G4). After 12 hours of fixation, the G1 adrenal glands did not show the entire cortical layer marked by Bouin’s solution. For G2 and G3 there was a poor contrast, while for G4 there was a reasonable contrast. After 24 hours of fixation, G1 had an excellent contrast between layers, while G2 and G4 had a reasonable contrast...

Disector Z-axis mechanical method for stereology Anais da ABC (AABC)
Xavier-Vidal,Ricardo.
The purpose of this work is to calibrate a not expensive microscope to be applied in Optical Disector estimation. The evaluation of "Z-axis" bias and the "Z-axis" calibration were made utilizing a cover slip and a "manual digimatic outside micrometer scale" (Mitutoyo, Japan). Calibrating the cover slip we performed the calibration of the "Z-axis" of a microscope. In the cover slip two lines were painted with different colors using a pen glass. A blue line was painted on the up surface and another line (red) on the bottom surface of the cover slip forming a cross. Two metal rings with one palette welded in each were adapted in the microscope. Other palette was welded in the gross focuses in order to restrict the route of the fine focuses (Z-axis study)...

Morphometric variation in pink shrimp populations at Rio de Janeiro coast (SE Brazil): are they really similar in closer areas? Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARVALHO,CÁSSIA DE; KEUNECKE,KARINA A.; LAVRADO,HELENA P..
Abstract:Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and F. paulensis are the most exploited shrimps of SE-S Brazilian coast. Our aim was to verify if adjacent nursery areas with different environmental condition (Sepetiba and Guanabara bays, SE Brazil) influence on shrimp populations (eg, CPUE) and body shapes. Samplings were carried out during 12 months in those bays ca. 85 Km far from each other. Carapace length (CL), total body length (TL), wet weight, abdomen size and TL/CL ratio were used to analyze variations in shape through regressions. In general, F. brasiliensis was 4 to 6 times more abundant than F. paulensis. The sex ratio differed from 1:1 in F. brasiliensis in both bays, with dominance of females, largest catches occur in autumn. However, differences in...

Mitochondria-rich cells changes induced by nitrite exposure in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818) Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,OSCAR T.F. DA; RAMOS,CLEVERSON A.; DUNCAN,WALLICE P.; LAMEIRAS,JULIANA L.V.; FERNANDES,MARISA N..
ABSTRACT The gill mitochondria-rich cells of the juvenile Amazonian fish Colossoma macropomum were analyzed using light and scanning and transmission electron microscopy after 96 h exposure to 0.04 and 0.2 mM nitrite. Although the number of mitochondria-rich cells decreased significantly in the lamellar epithelium, no decrease was found in the interlamellar region of the gill filament. Nitrite exposure caused significant reduction on the apical surface area of individual mitochondria-rich cells (p < 0.05), with a resulting reduction of the fractional area of these cells in both the lamellar and filament epithelium. Swelling of endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, nuclear envelope and mitochondria were the main changes found in the mitochondria-rich cells....

Stereological tools in biomedical research Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mandarim-de-Lacerda,Carlos A..
Stereological studies are more and more frequent in literature, particularly in the development/evolution, pathology, and neurosciences areas. The stereology challenge is to understand the structural inner threedimensional arrangement based on the analysis of the structure slices only showing two-dimensional information. Cavalieri and Scherle's methods to estimate volume, and Buffon's needle problem, are commented in the stereological context. A group of actions is needed to appropriately quantify morphological structures (unbiased and reproducibly), e.g. sampling, isotropic and uniform randomly sections (Delesse's principle), and updated stereological tools (disector, fractionator, nucleator, etc). Through the correct stereology use, a quantitative study...

Morphometric observations on three populations of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), a main wheat aphid pest in Brazil Anais da SEB
Rubin-de-Celis,Verônica E.; Gassen,Dirceu N.; Callegari-Jacques,Sídia M.; Valente,Vera L. S.; Oliveira,Alice K..
The green aphid Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) is an important pest of Graminae. Samples of this aphid were collected at three environmentally distinct Brazilian localities, Passo Fundo (RS), Jaguariuna (SP) and Dourados (MS). Alatae and apterous viviparous forms were reared on the BR-35 wheat (Triticum aestivum) strain under controlled laboratory conditions and studied as to their variability in measures of body size and production of progeny. Univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (canonical discriminant functions) techniques were used to evaluate differences among the three populations. Conspicuous differences between populations were observed in the length of five structures of the alatae and eight of the apterous forms, as well as in offspring production....

Histomorphological and quantitative immunohistochemical changes in the rat pancreas during aging Biocell
Riccillo,F.L.; Bracamonte,M.I.; Cónsole,G.M.; Gómez Dumm,C.L.A..
Although the endocrine pancreas is the purpose of several deep investigations, morphological data referred to the effect of aging on the gland are not homogeneous. The purpose of the current work was to analyze the changes occurring in the pancreas of aged rats, with especial reference to the islet cell populations. Six young (Y), old (O) and senescent (S) male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The pancreas tails were processed for light microscopy and studied by means of routine stains as well as by immunohistochemical identification of insulin-, glucagon-, somatostatin-, and pancreatic polypeptide- secreting cells (Dako Envision System, DAB as chromogen). A progressive pancreatic histoarchitecture distortion was found among the aged animals. Even when the...

Microdesiccates produced from normal human tears display four distinctive morphological components Biol. Res.
López Solís,Remigio; Traipe Castro,Leonidas; Salinas Toro,Daniela; Srur,Miguel; Toledo Araya,Héctor.
Desiccation of human tears on glass surfaces results in fern-like crystalloids. This phenomenon has been associated with tear normality (Tear Ferning Test, TFT) and is used as a diagnostic aid to evaluate patients with Dry-Eye disease. However, TFT is focused on the assessment of only a minor fraction of desiccated tear samples and considers only the relative abundance and density of fern-like crystalloids. The aim of this study was to characterize morphologically entire desiccated micro volumes of tears from healthy donors. Tear samples were collected from 23 healthy young adult volunteers. Tear aliquots (1-3 μL) were allowed to dry on glass surfaces under ambient conditions of temperature (15-25°C) and relative humidity (40-45%). Dry samples...
