The objective of the present investigation was to perform a 14-day time-course study of treatment with salbutamol, a ß2 adrenoceptor agonist, on rat soleus muscle in order to assess fiber type selectivity in the hypertrophic response and fiber type composition. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control (N = 10), treated with salbutamol (N = 30), denervated (N = 30), and treated with salbutamol after denervation (N = 30). Salbutamol was injected intraperitoneally in the rats of the 2nd and 4th groups at a concentration of 0.3 mg/kg twice a day for 2 weeks. The muscles were denervated using the crush method with pean. The animals were sacrificed 3, 6, 9, 12, and 14 days after treatment. Frozen cross-sections of soleus muscle were stained for... |

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of creatine supplementation and exercise on the integrity of muscle fiber, as well as the effect of the supplementation on the creatine kinase (CK) assay measurement. Forty-nine sedentary individuals participated in a double-blind study and were divided into two groups: C (n=26) received 4x5-day packages of 0.6 g.kg-1 of body weight contained 50% of creatine + 50% of dextrose, and P (n=23) received packages containing only dextrose. On the first day the groups performed a 1RM test for bench press, seated row, leg extension, leg curl and leg press. On D7 they received the supplements. On the fourteenth day, they performed a training session of five exercises, each in three sets of ten repetitions at 75%... |

The characteristics of intrinsic muscle fibers in the anterior third of the adult rat tongue were studied employing light microscopy, SEM and high-resolution SEM (HRSEM) methods. For light microscopy, specimens were fixed in Bouin's solution and embedded in paraffin. In order to identify the muscle fibers and bundles of collagen fibers, frontal sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, azo-carmin and picro-sirius. The results showed that muscle fibers near the lamina propria are fixed with connective tissue, constituting several groups. The bundles of muscle fibers are arranged in longitudinal, vertical and transversal directions. For SEM, specimens were fixed in modified Karnovsky solution and freeze-fractured in liquid nitrogen revealed the collagen... |

The current study aimed to analyze the histochemical and morphological characteristics of the levator ani muscle in rats. For this, we used 10 Wistar rats (5 males and 5 females), weighing between 200 and 765g. The animals were dissected fresh and in formalin for the levator ani muscle anatomical observation. Muscle fragments were collected and frozen in n-Hexane previously cooled in liquid nitrogen. Then, the muscles were transferred to a microtome cryostat (HM 505 E Microm), being fixed in metal mounts with the adhesive Tissue Freezing Medium. Histological sections of 6.0µm were removed and subjected to HE staining. Other sections were subjected to NADH-TR and SDH reactions. After being dissected and fixed, the architecture of the female pelvic floor... |

Skeletal muscles respond to several stimuli changing their phenotype. Muscular fibers adaptation capability is related to the presence of several myosin heavy chains (MHC). These express four types of pure fibers: I, IIA, IID and IIB containing MHCI, IIa, IId and IIb, respectively. Among pure fibers, there are hybrid fibers, which can express two or more types of myosins. In this study, types of fibers constituting male Wistar rats semitendinous and their myosin heavy chains, as well as influence of intermittent training on hypertrophy of these fibers have been checked through MATPase histochemical technique and electrophoretic proteins separation. All types of pure and hybrid muscular fiber have been found, however the fibers of the types IIA, IID and IIB... |

Neuromuscular compartments are subvolumens supplied by a primary nerve branch with homogeneous fiber characteristics. This muscular organization is important for understanding the muscle function in relation to postural and dynamic implications and also is relevant for appraising meat quality. Current researches associate fiber muscle characteristics with perimortem processes that regulate muscle transformation into meat. It is known that pig muscle has four heavy chain myosin isoforms: I, IIa, IIx and IIb. Castrated male pigs were slaughtered at 100 kg live weight. Semitendinosus muscle samples of each subvolumen determined previously (R1, R2, R3, R4) were frozen in liquid nitrogen and reacted for myofibrillar ATPase and NADH-TR for determining fiber... |

ABSTRACT The current study was conducted to develop the correlations between muscle fiber characteristics and meat quality attributes in the biceps femoris muscle of Arbor Acres (AA) and Yellow-feathered chicken (YFC). A total of fourty pure breed birds of AA (n=20) and YFC (n=20) were used in the experiment. After slaughtering at their respective market age of slaughtering: AA 40 d and YFC 120 d, samples were collected for meat quality attributes and myosin ATPase staining for fiber types analyses. Meat quality attributes and muscle fiber characteristics i-e; diameter, cross-sectional area (CSA) and density of AA were significantly different from the YFC (p<0.05). Type I fibers number percentage was significantly higher in YFC than AA, whereas CSA and... |
