Evaluation of Physiological Parameters of Broilers with Dorsal Cranial Myopathy Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Amaral,PC; Zimermann,C; Santos,LR; Noro,M; Prá,MD; Pilotto,F; Rodrigues,LB; Dickel,EL.
ABSTRACT There are several causes of carcass condemnation in poultry processing plants, including dorsal cranial myopathy (DCM), in which the anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) muscle is affected. DCM etiology has not been elucidated yet, but this lesion impairs the visual quality of carcasses and causes economic losses due to downgrading and condemnation. The effects of this lesion on the systemic health of broilers are still unknown. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate muscle injury and systemic health indicators in broilers presenting or not DCM. The following parameters were evaluated: complete blood count (CBC), total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, lactate, and glucose serum levels, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and...

The effect of intermittent cryotherapy on the activities of citrate synthase and lactate dehydrogenase in regenerating skeletal muscle BABT
Oliveira,Nuno Miguel Lopes de; Durigan,João Luiz Quagliotti; Munin,Flávia Simone; Schwantes,Maria Luiza Barcelos; Salvini,Tania de Fátima.
This study examined the effect of three sessions of cryotherapy (three sessions of 30 minutes applied each 2 h) and muscle compression in the regenerating skeletal muscle of the rats. The middle belly of tibialis anterior muscle was injured by a frozen iron bar and received one of the following intervention: injury + cryotherapy (treated with cryotherapy); injury + placebo (sand pack), and injury (I).The enzymatic activities of citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured in the presence of 1mM or 10mM pyruvate. The ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05) were performed for the statistical analysis. In summary, the intermittent sessions of cryotherapy, associated to muscle compression and applied immediately after the primary muscle...

Functional changes of human quadriceps muscle injured by eccentric exercise BJMBR
Serrão,F.V.; Foerster,B.; Spada,S.; Morales,M.M.B.; Monteiro-Pedro,V.; Tannús,A.; Salvini,T.F..
The present study evaluated functional changes of quadriceps muscle after injury induced by eccentric exercise. Maximal isometric torque of quadriceps and the surface electromyography (root mean square, RMS, and median frequency, MDF) of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles were examined before, immediately after and during the first 7 days after injury. Serum creatine kinase (CK) levels and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were used to identify muscle injury. The subject was used as her own control and percent refers to pre-injury data. Experiments were carried out with a sedentary 23-year-old female. Injury was induced by 4 bouts of 15 maximal isokinetic eccentric contractions (angular velocity of 5º/s; range of motion from...
