Zygomycosis and skin pythiosis in horses: diagnosis and treatment MV&Z
Rodrigues, Celso Antônio; Luvizotto, Maria Cecília Rui.
Also known as phycomycoses, pythiosis and zygomycosis are mycotic diseases with very similar morphological and histopathological features, and occur in skin, subcutaneous tissue, GI tract and lungs, mainly in horses. The etiological agents are soil and vegetation saprophytes present in swamps. Horses acquire the infection by remaining in these areas, in contact with the soil, favoring the occurrence of infected granulomatous lesions mainly in the distal portion of the limbs, ventral region of thea bdomen, chest and neck, with severe pruritus, ulceration, and viscous and abundant serosanguineous secretion. Several methods are used to treat these mycoses, surgical excision associated with amphotericin B being the most important. However, new adjuvant...

Dermatophytes and saprobe fungi isolated from dogs and cats in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Paixão,G.C.; Sidrim,J.J.C.; Campos,G.M.M.; Brilhante,R.S.N.; Rocha,M.F.G..
The possible involvement of saprobe fungi in dermatomycoses, as well as the determination of the incidence of dermatophytes in dogs and cats were studied. During a period of one year, 74 dogs and 18 cats, with cutaneous lesions suggesting mycoses were included in this study. The mycological analyses were conducted by direct microscopy and by fungal culture on Sabouraud agar, chloramphenicol Sabouraud agar and mycosel agar. Of the 92 samples, 21 resulted in positive cultures for dermatophytes. Dermatophyte fungi pure cultures were obtained from 13 samples. A simultaneous growth of dermatophytes plus saprobe fungi was observed in 8 of the samples. Of the remaining 71 samples, no fungal growth was observed in 10 samples, and at minimum the growth of one...

Isolation of filamentous fungi from public telephones of the Metropolitan region of the city of Recife, PE, Brazil BJM
Coutinho,Flavia Paiva; Cavalcanti,Marilene da Silva; Cordeiro Neto,Francisco.
Fungi can inhabit our organism without causing any harm, but they show themselves when the immunological system is compromised. In this study, a survey of the occurrence of filamentous fungi was carried out in public telephones of the Metropolitan Region of the City of Recife, PE, Brazil. This showed the public phones as a possible mean of transmission of fungal diseases among humans. Samples from the environment, audios, speakers and keyboards were taken at the airport, mall, subway and bus station in the months of October/2003 (dry season) and June/2004 (rainy season), totaling 120 samples. The procedure of identification of species was carried out through conventional taxonomy. Thirty-four genera were isolated, totaling 73 species, the majority...
