PRESENCE OF ASPERGILLUS AND OTHER FUNGAL SYMBIONTS IN COFFEE BEANS FROM COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
GAMBOA-GAITÁN,MIGUEL ÁNGEL.
Fungi are common inhabitants of plants and plant-derived products. Some of these fungal species are potentially dangerous to human health since they are able to produce chemical substances that alter normal physiological activity. There are no studies about natural mycoflora associated with coffee beans in Colombia, and nothing is known about the presence and abundance of toxigenic fungal species in Colombian coffee. In this study 5,000 coffee beans were studied by plating them on potato-based artificial culture medium and it was shown that potentially toxigenic fungal taxa (mostly from genera Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium), are currently found in Colombian coffee beans. This is true for all steps of coffee processing, from berries in trees to toasted...

Di Domenico, Adriana Sbardelotto; Busso, Cleverson; Hashimoto, Elisabete Hiromi; Frata, Marcela Tostes; Christ, Divair; Coelho, Sílvia Renata Machado.
The aim of this study was to assess alternatives for viable corn storage for small rural properties in two annual storage experiments. A 4×5 factorial design was used with four types of storage (conventional bags, hermetic bags, metal silos and corncobs) and five periods of storage (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months). We used corn hybrids 2B688RR and 30K73Hx cultivated in winter 2012 and summer 2012/2013 in the city of Dois Vizinhos, Paraná, Brazil. The moisture contents, counts of Aspergillus sp. and Fusarium sp., and the occurrence of aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1 and G2) were assessed. The kernels stored in hermetic bags had lower moisture contents. Aspergillus sp. and Fusarium sp. were observed in 20.37 and 86.11% of winter storage samples, respectively, and in 83.3...

Keller,K.M.; Deveza,M.V.; Koshiyama,A.S.; Tassinari,W.S.; Barth,O.M.; Castro,R.N.; Lorenzon,M.C..
The Brazilian Sac Brood is a disease that affects apiaries of Africanized bee hives in Brazil, thereby making them susceptible to high losses. This study investigated the pathogenicity of Africanized bee hives by the entomopathogenic fungi in a Brazilian Sac Brood endemic region. The degree of fungal contamination, presence of mycotoxins in beehive elements, and vulnerability of healthy beehives in environments subjected and not subjected to the disease were investigated. From the contaminating fungal load, species that are mycotoxin producers and pathogenic causing mortality in the bees have been isolated. The analysis of bee pollen and bee bread samples did not show the presence of the toxic pollen of Stryphnodendron (Fabaceae), which has been indicated...

Fusarium poae and mycotoxins: potential risk for consumers Boletín de la Sociedad
Dinolfo,María I; Stenglein,Sebastián A.
Fusarium head blight is an important disease affecting cereal grains. Fusarium graminearum is the major causal agent of this disease around the world, but some researchers have documented the increased importance of F. poae. Moreover, F. poae presence may be accompanied of its mycotoxins production, being able to produce trichothecenes of type A diacetoxyscirpenol, monoacetoxyscirpenol, scirpentriol, HT-2 toxin, T-2 toxin and neosolaniol, as well as the type B nivalenol and fusarenone-X. Outside the trichotecenes group, F. poae has been reported to produce enniatins, beauvericin and moniliformin. Due to F. poae may be present in cereal grains used for food and processed products, the aims of this review is to recognize the importance of the hazard effects...

Maize (Zea Mays L) landraces from the southern region of Brazil: contamination by Fusarium sp, zearalenone, physical and mechanical characteristics of the kernels BABT
Oliveira,Tatiana Roselena de; Jaccoud-Filho,David de Souza; Henneberg,Luciana; Michel,Milton Domingos; Demiate,Ivo Mottin; Pinto,Alessandra Teixeira Barbosa; Machinski Junior,Miguel; Barana,Ana Cláudia.
This work had as objectives the study of the physical and mechanical characteristics of maize kernels in relation to the contamination by Fusarium sp and by zearalenone in twenty landraces of maize from the southern region of Brazil. From the analyzed samples, 60 % has been considered to have a hard endosperm type and 40 % an intermediary one. A correlation between the physical and mechanical variables was observed as an indication that the higher is the proportion of hard endosperm, more dense will be the kernel and more force for its rupture will be necessary. The level of contamination by Fusarium sp was between 5.5 and 24.75% among the analyzed grains, correlating positively with the flotation index, indicating that the landraces of maize with a softer...

Ono,Elisabete Yurie Sataque; Silva,Marcelo da; Ribeiro,Ricardo Marcelo Reche; Ono,Mario Augusto; Hayashi,Luciana; Garcia,Glauco Tironi; Hirooka,Elisa Yoko.
In this study the bright greenish-yellow fluorescence test, widely used by the corn milling industry, was compared to the thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and spectrofluorimetry methods for aflatoxin detection in 40 corn samples naturally contaminated by the Aspergillus section Flavi. According to the corn processing industry criteria, all the samples were adequate for human and animal consumption by the bright greenish-yellow fluorescence test, but TLC and spectrofluorimetry analysis detected aflatoxins above the maximum tolerated limit (20 µg/kg) in 7 and 8 samples, respectively. Aflatoxins were detected in 16 (40%) corn samples by TLC, with levels ranging from 4.0 to 54.0 µg/kg (mean 19.97 ± 15.97 µg/kg), and in 25 (62.5%) samples by spectrofluorimetry,...

Comparison of the efficiency between two sampling plans for aflatoxins analysis in maize BJM
Mallmann,Adriano Olnei; Marchioro,Alexandro; Oliveira,Maurício Schneider; Rauber,Ricardo Hummes; Dilkin,Paulo; Mallmann,Carlos Augusto.
Variance and performance of two sampling plans for aflatoxins quantification in maize were evaluated. Eight lots of maize were sampled using two plans: manual, using sampling spear for kernels; and automatic, using a continuous flow to collect milled maize. Total variance and sampling, preparation, and analysis variance were determined and compared between plans through multifactor analysis of variance. Four theoretical distribution models were used to compare aflatoxins quantification distributions in eight maize lots. The acceptance and rejection probabilities for a lot under certain aflatoxin concentration were determined using variance and the information on the selected distribution model to build the operational characteristic curves (OC). Sampling...

Methods to preserve potentially toxigenic fungi BJM
Guimarães,Lucas Costa; Fernandes,Ana Paula; Chalfoun,Sara Maria; Batista,Luís Roberto.
Microorganisms are a source of many high-value compounds which are useful to every living being, such as humans, plants and animals. Since the process of isolating and improving a microorganism can be lengthy and expensive, preserving the obtained characteristic is of paramount importance, so the process does not need to be repeated. Fungi are eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, heterotrophic organisms, usually filamentous, absorb their food, can be either macro or microscopic, propagate themselves by means of spores and store glycogen as a source of storage. Fungi, while infesting food, may produce toxic substances such as mycotoxins. The great genetic diversity of the Kingdom Fungi renders the preservation of fungal cultures for many years relevant. Several...

Mycotoxin research in Brazil: the last decade in review BJM
Rodríguez-Amaya,Delia B.; Sabino,Myrna.
The number of research papers (128 papers) on mycotoxins published by Brazilian researchers in 1991-2000 surpassed the total number (85 papers) published in the preceding three decades (1961-1990). Thirty percent of the papers surveyed mycotoxins in foods and feeds. AFs in peanut and peanut products continued to be alarming, and high incidence and levels of FBs in corn and corn products also appeared as a serious problem. Contamination with other toxins, such as ZEA, OTA and trichothecenes, was low. Occurrence of AFM1 in milk and dairy products and patulin in apple juice needs to be verified as the results are somewhat diverging. Work on analytical methods, mycological examination and toxic effects constituted 16, 13 and 13%, respectively, of the published...
