Nuevos registros de insectos (Diptera y Siphonaptera) ectoparásitos de murciélagos (Vespertilionidae) del norte de Uruguay Mastozool. neotrop.

Se dan nuevos registros de insectos ectoparásitos (Diptera: Nycteribiidae: Basilia andersoni Peterson & Maa y B. plaumanni Scott y Siphonaptera: Ischnopsyllidae: Myodopsylla isidori (Wyenbergh), para cuatro especies de murciélagos Vespertilionidae: Eptesicus furinalis (d´Orbigny), Myotis albescens (Geoffroy), M. levis (Geoffroy) y M. riparius (Handley). Se amplía la distribución conocida de B. plaumanni y se da a conocer su asociación con E. furinalis en Uruguay.Se incrementa la nómina de hospedadores citados para B. andersoni.

Because of taxonomic difficulty with southern South American Myotis, the systematic status and distribution of M. levis remains unresolved. At the center of discussion is whether M. levis occurs in Paraguay. We report the occurrence of M. levis in Paraguay and substantiate our findings with comparative phenotypic and morphometric data for southern South American Myotis. This record closes a geographic gap for this species, whose distribution now includes parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

First record of Myotis izecksohni (chiroptera, vespertilionidae) for the Atlantic Forest of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.

Myotis izecksohni Moratelli et al., 2011 was recently described from the Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) complex, based on samples from four localities above 700 m in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest of south (Paraná) and southeastern (Rio de Janeiro) Brazil. The species is currently known only from these localities and little is known about its distributional limits, ecology and natural history. Here, we present 3 new occurrence records from Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Specimens reported here fit the qualitative and quantitative traits reported in the original description of M. izecksohni.

Malassezia vespertilionis sp. nov.: a new cold-tolerant species of yeast isolated from bats Naturalis

Malassezia is a genus of medically-important, lipid-dependent yeasts that live on the skin of warmblooded animals. The 17 described species have been documented primarily on humans and domestic animals, but few studies have examined Malassezia species associated with more diverse host groups such as wildlife. While investigating the skin mycobiota of healthy bats, we isolated a Malassezia sp. that exhibited only up to 92 % identity with other known species in the genus for the portion of the DNA sequence of the internal transcribed spacer region that could be confidently aligned. Records of Myodopsylla wolffsohni wolffsohni (Rothschild, 1903) (Siphonaptera, Ischnopsyllidae) on Myotis nigricans Schinz, 1821 (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae), from the State of Paraná, Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.

The flea, Myodopsylla wolffsohni wolffsohni (Rothschild, 1903), had been recorded for the first time in the State of Paraná in 1940, on the bat, Myotis levis (I. Geoffroy, 1824). Previously, this species of flea had only been recorded on Myotis nigricans, in the Amazonian region. This is the second record of M. w. wolffsohni on M. nigricans in Brazil, and the first in the State of Paraná. Although this flea has been found on undetermined Chiroptera in the State of Santa Catarina, the present record represents the meridional limit of geographic distribution for the infestation on M. nigricans.

Morphometric and morphological variation in South American populations of Myotis albescens (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.

Myotis albescens (É. Geoffroy, 1806) occurs from Mexico to Uruguay and Argentina. Despite a large number of specimens in collections, its variability in South America has been underestimated, potentially leading to errors in identification. In order to clarify the taxonomic limits of M. albescens and to evaluate previous hypotheses of geographic variation in size we analyzed the type material and studied the variability in South American samples using multivariate exploratory and confirmatory procedures, as well as frequency analyses of discrete morphological data.
