A high-resolution study of Holocene paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes in the Nordic Seas ArchiMer
Risebrobakken, B; Jansen, E; Andersson, C; Mjelde, E; Hevroy, K.
High-resolution records from IMAGES core MD95-2011 in the eastern Norwegian Sea provide evidence for relatively large- and small-scale high-latitude climate variability throughout the Holocene. During the early and mid-Holocene a situation possibly driven by consistent stronger westerlies increased the eastward influence of Arctic intermediate and near-surface waters. For the late Holocene a relaxation of the atmospheric forcing resulted in increased influence of Atlantic water. The main changes in Holocene climate show no obvious connection to changing solar irradiance, and spectral analysis reveals no consistent signature for any periodic behavior of Holocene climate at millennial or centennial timescales. There are, however, indications of consistent...

Observations and Predictions of Wave Runup, Extreme Water Levels, and Medium-Term Dune Erosion during Storm Conditions ArchiMer
Suanez, Serge; Cancouet, Romain; Floc'H, France; Blaise, Emmanuel; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Filipot, Jean-francois; Cariolet, Jean-marie; Delacourt, Christophe.
Monitoring of dune erosion and accretion on the high-energy macrotidal Vougot beach in North Brittany (France) over the past decade (2004–2014) has revealed significant morphological changes. Dune toe erosion/accretion records have been compared with extreme water level measurements, defined as the sum of (i) astronomic tide; (ii) storm surge; and (iii) vertical wave runup. Runup parameterization was conducted using swash limits, beach profiles, and hydrodynamic (Hm0, Tm0,–1, and high tide water level—HTWL) data sets obtained from high frequency field surveys. The aim was to quantify in-situ environmental conditions and dimensional swash parameters for the best calibration of Battjes [1] runup formula. In addition, an empirical equation based on observed...

Long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna trap catches: are they environmentally driven? ArchiMer
Ravier-mailly, Christelle; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
We tested whether synchronous long-term fluctuations in Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) trap catches, collected from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fishery, might be related to environmental changes in NAO and/or in temperature. Spectral analyses of trap catches and temperature displayed similar spectra with peak at low frequency whereas those of the NAO exhibited a broad band spectrum. Regression analyses and tests of correlation did not reveal any clear relationship between trap catches and NAO. In contrast, long-term fluctuations in trap catches appear to be negatively and significantly related to long-term trends in temperature. Underlying processes that could explain such a relationship are discussed, with special focus on...

Can we detect the effects of environmental variations on fish populations through VPA outputs? the North Atlantic albacore case ArchiMer
Kell, Laurence T; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Ortiz De Zarate, Victoria; Arrizabalaga, Haritz.
Past studies have indicated that numbers-at-age 1 of albacore may be correlated with the winter NAO index in the previous year. Two main hypotheses have been stressed to explain such observation, i.e. an impact of the NAO on the recruitment or on migration patterns and consequently in the availability and catchability of specific age classes to the surface fishery. The objective of the present paper is to test whether such processes can be distinguished using VPA outputs. We first computed simple cross-correlations between the NAO at various lags, catches-at-age, Numbers-atage and F-at-age estimated in the last assessment. Since results were inconclusive, simulations were undertaken. The results showed that the probability of detecting spurious...

Oceanic control of multidecadal variability in an idealized coupled GCM ArchiMer
Jamet, Quentin; Huck, Thierry; Arzel, Olivier; Campin, Jean-michel; De Verdiere, Alain Colin.
Idealized ocean models are known to develop intrinsic multidecadal oscillations of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC). Here we explore the role of ocean–atmosphere interactions on this low-frequency variability. We use a coupled ocean–atmosphere model set up in a flat-bottom aquaplanet geometry with two meridional boundaries. The model is run at three different horizontal resolutions (4°, 2° and 1°) in both the ocean and atmosphere. At all resolutions, the MOC exhibits spontaneous variability on multidecadal timescales in the range 30–40 years, associated with the propagation of large-scale baroclinic Rossby waves across the Atlantic-like basin. The unstable region of growth of these waves through the long wave limit of baroclinic instability...

Sea-level changes in Iceland and the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation during the last half millennium ArchiMer
Saher, Margot H.; Gehrels, W. Roland; Barlow, Natasha L. M.; Long, Antony J.; Haigh, Ivan D.; Blaauw, Maarten.
We present a new, diatom-based sea-level reconstruction for Iceland spanning the last similar to 500 years, and investigate the possible mechanisms driving the sea-level changes. A sea-level reconstruction from near the Icelandic low pressure system is important as it can improve understanding of ocean atmosphere forcing on North Atlantic sea-level variability over multi-decadal to centennial timescales. Our reconstruction is from Vioarholmi salt marsh in Snafellsnes in western Iceland, a site from where we previously obtained a 2000-yr record based upon less precise sea-level indicators (salt-marsh foraminifera). The 20th century part of our record is corroborated by tide-gauge data from Reykjavik. Overall, the new reconstruction shows ca 0.6 m rise of...

Analyse des déterminants environnementaux de la variabilité du recrutement - approche macroécologique appliquée aux populations exploitées du Nord-Est Atlantique ArchiMer
Brunel, Thomas.
Recruitment - the number of young fishes that integrate each year the exploitable stock¿ has a central importance for stock dynamics. The high temporal variability in recruitment is a result of the environmental influence on survival during early life stages. Understanding the determinism of the influence of environment on recruitment remains one of the most important question in fisheries ecology. The present work aimed at answering some general questions about the influence of environment on fish recruitment using a macroecological approach. The study focused on the exploited fish populations of the Northeastern Atlantic. The first chapter of the thesis makes a review of the different methods used to estimate recruitment, compares recruitment estimates...
