Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) Inhibited the Alv-J-Induced Apoptosis in Df-1 Cells by Inactivation of Nuclear Factor κb Pathway Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Zhang,Y; Yang,H; Wu,X; Deng,M; Li,Z; Xu,Z.
ABSTRACT Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J), a member of the retroviridae family, can infect both broilers and layers and induce a spectrum of different neoplasms, resulting in serious economic losses in poultry production. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major constituent of green tea, has demonstrated remarkable anti-inflammatory and cancer chemopreventive effects in many animal tumor bioassays, cell culture systems and epidemiological studies. To assess the antiviral effects of EGCG on ALV-J-induced cell apoptosis in vitro, DF-1 cells were treated with different EGCG concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 µg/mL), and their antiviral effects were examined at different time points (0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h) using a variety of assays. EGCG...

Sambucus australis Modulates Inflammatory Response via Inhibition of Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NF-kB) in vitro Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARNEIRO,NORMA V.Q.; SILVA,HUGO B.F. DA; SILVA,RAIMON R. DA; CARNEIRO,TAMIRES C.B.; COSTA,RYAN S.; PIRES,ANAQUE O.; MARQUES,CINTIA R.; VELOZO,EUDES S.; CONCEIÇÃO,ADILVA S.; SILVA,TANIA M.S. DA; SILVA,TELMA M.G. DA; ALCÂNTARA-NEVES,NEUZA M.; FIGUEIREDO,CAMILA A..
Abstract: Medicinal plants have long been used as an alternative to traditional drugs for the treatment of inflammatory conditions due to the classical side effects and restricted access of various commercially available drugs, such as steroids (GCs) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Sambucus australis is a Brazilian herb that is commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases; however, few studies have examined the use of this species in the treatment of inflammatory conditions. The present study aims to evaluate the potential anti-inflammatory activity of S. australis in vitro. We established spleen cell cultures stimulated with pokeweed mitogen (PWM) to evaluate the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-4, IL-5, IFN-y, and...

Effects of Er-Miao-San extracts on TNF-alpha-indueed MMP-1 expression in human dermal fibroblasts Biol. Res.
Bae,Seunghee; Jung,Younjung; Choi,Yeong Min; Li,Shunhua.
BACKGROUND: Various health benefits have been attributed to Er-Miao-San (EMS), a traditional Chinese herbal formulation that contains equal amounts of cortex phellodendri (Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht) and rhizoma atractylodis (Atractylodes lancea D.C). However, its effect on the anti-inflammatory activity in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and the mechanism underlying this effect are unknown. RESULTS: This study investigated the effects of EMS on TNF-α-induced MMP-1 expression in HDFs. Our data show that EMS inhibited TNF-α-induced MMP-1 expression in a concentration-dependent manner. Interestingly, EMS maintained IkB content without inhibiting the phosphorylation of MAPKs, which are well-established upstream kinases of NF-kB....

Diabetic retinopathy: could the alpha-1 antitrypsin be a therapeutic option? Biol. Res.
Ortiz,Gustavo; Salica,Juan P; Chuluyan,Eduardo H; Gallo,Juan E.
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most important causes of blindness. The underlying mechanisms of this disease include inflammatory changes and remodeling processes of the extracellular-matrix (ECM) leading to pericyte and vascular endothelial cell damage that affects the retinal circulation. In turn, this causes hypoxia leading to release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to induce the angiogenesis process. Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is the most important circulating inhibitor of serine proteases (SERPIN). Its targets include elastase, plasmin, thrombin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, proteinase 3 (PR-3) and plasminogen activator (PAI). AAT modulates the effect of protease-activated receptors (PARs) during inflammatory responses. Plasma levels of AAT...
