Phytoplankton diversity during the spring bloom in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Percopo, Isabella; Siano, Raffaele; Cerino, Federica; Sarno, Diana; Zingone, Adriana.
The section of the Liguro-Provencal basin north of the Balearic Islands is one of the most productive sites in the whole Mediterranean Sea, with intense phytoplankton bloom lasting about 2 months in late winter-early spring. The phytoplankton species composition of the area was investigated using light and electron microscopy to analyze bottle and net samples collected at several stations in spring 2000 and 2003. Serial dilution cultures established from bottle samples were also examined. A total of 168 phytoplankton taxa was identified, consisting of 73 Coscinodiscophyceae, 47 Dinophyceae, 25 Coccolithophyceae and 4 Prymnesiophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, 3 Chrysophyceae, 2 Cryptophyceae, 2 Dictyochophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 1 Pelagophyceae, 1...

The Messinian Ebro River incision ArchiMer
Pellen, Romain; Aslanian, Daniel; Rabineau, Marina; Suc, J.p.; Gorini, C.; Leroux, Estelle; Blanpied, C.; Silenziario, C.; Popescu, S.m.; Rubino, J.l..
Morphological sills condition sedimentary, water and fauna exchanges between different domains. In particular, sills are crucial factors to consider during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) palaeogeographic evolution (5.97–5.33 Ma) of the NW Mediterranean area. Here we focus on the Ebro River and its up to now unexplained short Messinian onshore length (~100 km) compared to that of the Messinian Rhone River (~480 km) despite similar present-day drainage basins. Thanks to an extensive seismic and borehole dataset, we present a new interpretation of a complete 270 km long Messinian Ebro incised-valley system course underneath the present-day continental margin and bathyal basin and its related distal detrital deposits. These results favour a syn-MSC or...

Responses of European anchovy vital rates and population growth to environmental fluctuations: An individual-based modeling approach ArchiMer
Pethybridge, Heidi; Roos, David; Loizeau, Veronique; Pecquerie, Laure; Bacher, Cedric.
A size-structured, bioenergetics model was implemented to examine the effects of short-term environmental changes on European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, in the North-western Mediterranean Sea. The model approach was based on Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory and details the acquisition and allocation of energy (J d(-1)) during an organisms' full life-cycle. Model calibration was achieved using biometric data collected from the Gulf of Lions between 2002 and 2011. Bioenergetics simulations successfully captured ontogenetic and seasonal growth patterns, including active growth in spring/summer, loss of mass in autumn/winter and the timing and amplitude of multi-batch spawning events. Scenario analysis determined that vital rates (growth and fecundity)...

Influence of environmental variability and age on the body condition of small pelagic fish in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Menard, Frederic; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Ulses, Caroline; Bourdeix, Jean-herve; Bigot, Jean-louis; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Roos, David; Saraux, Claire.
Endogenous and environmental variables are fundamental in explaining variations in fish condition. Based on more than 20 yr of fish weight and length data, relative condition indices were computed for anchovy and sardine caught in the Gulf of Lions. Classification and regression trees (CART) were used to identify endogenous factors affecting fish condition, and to group years of similar condition. Both species showed a similar annual cycle with condition being minimal in February and maximal in July. CART identified 3 groups of years where the fish populations generally showed poor, average and good condition and within which condition differed between age classes but not according to sex. In particular, during the period of poor condition (mostly recent...

The effects of a strong winter storm on physical and biological variables at a shelf site in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Cauwet, G; Charles, F; Courties, C; De Bovee, F; Dinet, A; Devenon, Jean-luc; Durrieu De Madron, X; Ferre, B; Fraunie, P; Joux, F; Lantoine, F; Lebaron, P; Naudin, Jj; Palanques, A; Pujo-pay, M; Zudaire, L.
A survey involving both permanent mooring and high frequency sampling was carried in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer during the fall of 1999 to assess the effect of strong and unpredictable meteorological events on the functioning of a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem. A severe winter storm took place on 12 November, which generated waves with a significant height of 7 m and a sea surface rise of about 0.5 m. The near-bottom current speed at 24 m reached 30 cm s(-1). This storm induced a significant increase in total suspended matter through resuspension and then a subsequent increase in gross sedimentation rates. It also resulted in an increase of the proportion of refractory particulate organic matter in the water column. It also tended to increase nutrient...
