Checklist of the chalcid wasps of the Netherlands (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) A first list of Dutch Chalcidoidea was published by Snellen van Vollenhoven in Herklots (Snellen van Vollenhoven, 1858). This list contained 24 species of chalcids, partly synonyms of each other. In a new list (Snellen van Vollenhoven 1873), he mentioned 85 species. Since Vollenhoven’s time about 250 names have been added by several authors in shorter communications. Not all the old names can be verified, many of the specimens are lost either by mold or voracious insects. In the list here presented the names of lost specimens are omitted (table 4) except when it concerns newly described species, or when additional remarks give a high probability of correct identification. These... |

Catalogue of the Dutch spiders (Araneae) This new catalogue is a revised edition of the catalogue of the spiders of the Netherlands of 1980. Newly published faunistic records have been added. A total of 640 species names pass in review, 20 of which (in brackets) concern former records now removed, while 10 are questionable but unverifiable (indicated with ?). Twelve species clearly introduced and not represented by viable populations outside the special anthropogenic environments, such as greenhouses, are included in the catalogue [in square brackets]. Since 1980, 77 species have been added to the Dutch faunal spider checklist. The Netherlands house the type-localities of six nominal species, now representing three recognized species (Liocranum rutilans... |

An annotated list is given of whitefly species of the Netherlands, occurring in the open, indoors in greenhouses and living rooms and those intercepted during import inspections. In this paper over 50 species are mentioned, 14 of which occur in the open, 6 species have been only found in greenhouses and 42 species have been intercepted during quarantine inspections. The majority of the observations stem from the period 1970-2010. Aleurotuba jelinekii and Siphoninus immaculatus are new for the Netherlands, occurring outdoors. Due to regular introductions of species living on traded plants the chance that new species will establish is enhancing. |

The genus Sphegina Meigen, 1822 in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A survey of the genus Sphegina in the Netherlands is given. Some nomenclatural changes are indicated, which resulted in the following five species which are now known from the Netherlands: Sphegina clavata (Scopoli, 1763), Sphegina clunipes (Fallén, 1817), Sphegina elegans (Schummel, 1843), Sphegina sibirica Stackelberg, 1953 and Sphegina verecunda Collin, 1937. Some of the rarer species were confused with other species in the past or overlooked in the field. Several collections were re-examined and new records were gathered. This resulted in new distribution maps for the Dutch species and a description of the habitats. |

Atlas of the Dutch water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia) Few biogeographic studies have been published on water mites. Only Lundblad (1962) has published an atlas of the Swedish water mites. So far, there are no complete publications on the distribution of Dutch water mites. Acarologists who worked on Dutch water mites, i.e. A.C. Oudemans (1858-1943), G. Romijn (1868-1930) and A.J. Besseling (1898-1968) have collected in a limited geographical area only. Besseling, therefore, classified most of the water mites as rare or very rare. Davids (1979) adapted this to the knowledge of that time. Since this last publication, many new data have been collected in The Netherlands, including biotopes which had hardly been investigated. This resulted in publications on... |

Bugs of the West Frisian Islands ii (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) The first review of Heteroptera recorded from the West Frisian Islands was published in 1989 and included records of 278 species. To date, our knowledge of the fauna of these islands increased considerably, resulting in records of 336 species and 351 new island records. Texel houses most species since 2004 (279 against 181 in 1989), finally outnumbering Terschelling (272 against 240 in 1989) and also the numbers of known species from Ameland, Schiermonnikoog and Vlieland increased considerably. A review is given of all new island records since 1989 and a number of especially interesting species is treated in more detail. Comparisons are made between the fauna of the West Frisian Islands... |

A key to the Dutch spider wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) A key to the 65 species of spider wasps from the Netherlands, plus some additional species, is presented. It is the first key to the Dutch species since Wilcke (1943). The key is preceded by some remarks on morphology, techniques and a check list to the Dutch species. Arachnospila ausa has been removed from the list. The presence on the list was based on two voucher specimens in the Maastricht museum (nhm), one female which could not be traced and a male, which proved to be A. spissa. All Dutch species have received a Dutch common name. Brief information on body length, phenology and habitat and frequency is given. The recent book ‘De wespen en mieren van Nederland’ (Peeters et al. 2004) is... |

Checklist of the Dutch millipedes (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) An updated checklist for the millipedes of the Netherlands is presented. Now, a total of 50 species is known to occur in the country. Four species, i.e. Archiboreoiulus pallidus, Leptoiulus proximum, Mycogona germanica, and Polydesmus coriaceus and one subspecies, i.e. Craspedosoma rawlinsii alsaticum, are new compared with the previous checklist. Three species are removed from the checklist, i.e. for Stosatea italica and Unciger foetidus no voucher specimens could be found to confirm the published doubtful records, and Nanogona polydesmoides which proved to be a wrong identification. The updated list will be used for the distribution mapping scheme ‘millipedes of the Netherlands’ of the... |

Checklist of the Dutch Branchiopoda The last checklist of the Dutch Branchiopoda was published fifteen years ago. Since then twelve new species have been added to the Dutch fauna: Pleopis polyphemoides, Bythotrephes longimanus, Daphnia x obscura, D. x krausi, D. galeata, D. x tecta, D. atkinsoni, Ilyocryptus spinosus, I. cuneatus, I. silvaeducensis, Alona weltneri and Chirocephalus diaphanus. The new checklist counts 105 indigenous species of which 100 species belong to the Cladocera, two to the Notostraca and Anostraca and only one to the Conchostraca. Another nine species, which might be expected to be found in the Netherlands in future, are mentioned in the list between square brackets [ ]. These are briefly discussed. |
