Growth, water consumption and mineral composition of watercress under hydroponic system with brackish water Horticultura Brasileira
Lira,Raquele M; Silva,Ênio FF; Silva,Gerônimo F; Soares,Hammady R; Willadino,Lilia G.
ABSTRACT The underground water reserves in the semi-arid region present high salinity levels. However, the scarcity of the resource compels the use of this water for several human activities, including agriculture. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of brackish water for watercress cultivation (Nasturtium officinale) in a hydroponic NFT system (laminar flow of nutrients) and effects on water consumption, growth, yield and nutrient extraction by the plant. We studied six levels of salinity (0.2; 1.2; 2.2; 3.2; 4.2 and 5.2 dS m-1), in a completely randomized experimental design, with four replicates. Salinity was obtained by the addition of NaCl into the local water supply, being these waters used to prepare the nutrient solution and to replace the...

Effect of watercress on induced DNA damage, DNA repair and p-glycoprotein activity in human lymphocytes JBAG
Casanova,N.A; Wagner,M.L; López Nigro,M.M; Carballo,M.A.
Cruciferae vegetables are widely studied due to their potential anticarcinogenic properties. In the present work we analyzed the antigenotoxic effect of watercress (Nasturtium officinale, W. Aiton), a member of this family. The vegetal was processed, and the juice obtained was evaluated in relation with genetic material protection and DNA repair capacity against two deleterious agents: mitomycin C and hydrogen peroxide. The antigenotoxic properties were analyzed through cytokinesis block micronucleus test and comet assay (standard and with endonuclease), respectively. Besides, we tested the functionality of P-glycoprotein in human lymphocytes exposed to the whole extract. Watercress had no effect on mitomycin cytostatic effect (p>0.05) and although...

Desempenho produtivo do agrião d'água cultivado em solo sob telas de sombreamento PAB
Hirata,Andréia Cristina Silva; Hirata,Edson Kiyoharu.

Production of watercress with brackish water and different circulation times for the nutrient solution Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Souza,Camila Alves de; Silva,Alexsandro Oliveira da; Santos,Jenyffer da Silva Gomes; Lacerda,Claudivan Feitosa de; Silva,Gerônimo Ferreira da.
ABSTRACT In view of the limitations on good quality water, the use of low-quality water in agriculture is seen as a suitable alternative. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in a protected environment, the production of broadleaf watercress in an NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic system as a function of the use of brackish water and different circulation times for the nutrient solution. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of UFC, in Fortaleza, Ceará, from December 2018 to March 2019 (two crop cycles). The treatments were distributed in a randomised block design in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, five levels of water salinity (0.6, 1.6, 2.6, 3.6 and 4.6 dS m-1) and two circulation times for the nutrient solution (10 and 15 min),...
