Reproductive and feeding biology of the common lancehead Bothrops atrox (Serpentes, Viperidae) from central and southwestern Brazilian Amazonia Acta Amazonica
BISNETO,Pedro Ferreira; KAEFER,Igor Luis.
ABSTRACT The pitviper Bothrops atrox is a widely distributed and medically important snake in Amazonia. Given that the reproductive and feeding biology of snakes varies geographically, we aimed to characterize the natural history of individuals from the central and southwestern portions of the biome. We analyzed museum-preserved specimens collected in the region between the metropolitan areas of the Brazilian cities of Manaus and Porto Velho. We took morphometric measurements and performed the analysis of gonads and digestive tracts of 109 individuals. Females attain sexual maturity with larger body sizes. Adults of the species show pronounced sexual dimorphism in body size, with females being larger. The reproductive cycle, especially in males, appears to...

Brazilian herbaria: an overview Acta Botanica
Gasper,André Luís de; Stehmann,João Renato; Roque,Nádia; Bigio,Narcísio C.; Sartori,Ângela Lúcia Bagnatori; Grittz,Guilherme Salgado.
ABSTRACT Herbaria represent irreplaceable repositories of biodiversity and are used to answer questions about conservation, ecology, systematics, and other sciences. In this sense, we characterize the infrastructure, human resources, and idiosyncrasies of Brazilian herbaria. To achieve this goal, curators were sent a structured and standardized questionnaire to gather information about herbaria. The Brazilian Herbaria Network listed 216 active herbaria in the year 2018, of which 139 answered the questionnaire. These herbaria hold 6,741,469 samples in their collections and more than 39,000 type samples. Most herbaria are in federal universities (40.28 %). Only 24 % of the curators considered that their herbarium is valued by their institutions and 52 %...

Population structure and natural diet of Astyanax cf. paranae Eigenmann 1914 a typical species of neotropical headwaters streams Biological Sciences
Costa, Matheus Souza; Smith, Welber Senteio.
This work describes the habits of individuals of the species Astyanax cf. paranae that inhabit Ribeirão do Ferro, a bedside stream. Overall, 92 specimens were analyzed (53 females and 39 males), and the size ranged from class 4.7-5.7 cm to class 10.7-11.7 cm. The females consisted in the larger portion of the samples, except for classes of 4.7-5.7 and 5.7-6.7 cm. The condition factor between males and females (t = 2.1545; p < 0.05) shows distinguished values, with females having higher averages. Fragments of allochthonous insects and plant matter make up the basis of the species' diet. The study showed that the population of A. cf. paranae is predominantly females and have the highest standard for length and weight, which may favor biological...

Diet, sexual dimorphism and reproduction of sympatric racers Philodryas aestiva and Philodryas patagoniensis from the coastal Brazilian Pampa Anais da ABC (AABC)
QUINTELA,FERNANDO M.; LOEBMANN,DANIEL.
Abstract: Herein we investigated diet, sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of two sympatric congeneric species at the coastal Brazilian Pampa, Philodryas aestiva and P. patagoniensis. Analysis of the stomach content of the scansorial Philodryas aestiva revealed that it feeds mainly on Anura and small mammals, while it occasionally consumes Insecta, Squamata and Aves. The more terrestrial Philodryas patagoniensis presented a broader diet, composed mainly of Anura, Squamata and small mammals. Insecta and Actinopterygii were found in lower frequencies. In females of both species, snout-vent length was significantly larger than in males, while tail length/snout-vent length ratio was significantly higher in males. Males reach sexual maturity at smaller...

Composition and natural history of a Cerrado snake assemblage at Itirapina, São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sawaya,Ricardo Jannini; Marques,Otavio Augusto Vuolo; Martins,Marcio.
Neotropical snake assemblages present high species richness and complex structures. The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil, and was included among the 25 World's biodiversity hotspots. In southeastern Brazil, the remnant Cerrado areas have suffered intense destruction, and presently less than 2% of Cerrado natural vegetation remain in São Paulo state. Virtually no detailed study on Cerrado snakes was carried out in this region. The Itirapina region has one of the last well preserved remnants of open cerrado in São Paulo state. Our purpose in this work was the study of natural history and composition of the Cerrado snakes of Itirapina region. We performed an extensive field sampling combining six sampling methods in Estação Ecológica de Itirapina...

New records of fruit trees as host for Neosilba species (Diptera, Lonchaeidae) in southeast Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gisloti,Laura Jane; Uchoa,Manoel A.; Prado,Angelo.
Abstract Fruits of thirty-five cultivated native plant species (19 orders and 12 families) were sampled in farms of fruit production from two municipalities of São Paulo state, Brazil (January 2010 to March 2012) to evaluate species diversity of Neosilba flies. Thirty-one species of plants were the host for Neosilba species while four were not infested. Some aspects of the biology and patterns of species diversity, abundance, infestation rates, puparias viability and the interactions among species of frugivorous flies and their host plants were quantified. Seven species of Neosilba were reared: Neosilba bella Strikis & Prado (4 hosts), Neosilba certa (Walker) (4 hosts), Neosilba glaberrima (Wiedemann) (5 hosts), Neosilba inesperata Strikis & Prado...

Predation on Tropidurus hispidus (Squamata: Tropiduridae) by Lasiodora klugi (Aranea: Theraphosidae) in the semiarid caatinga region of northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Vieira,Washington Luiz Silva; Gonçalves,Maria Betânia Ribeiro; Nóbrega,Rômulo Pantoja.
A predation event on Tropidurus hispidus (Tropiduridae) by the crab spider Lasiodora klugi (Theraphosidae) was observed in an arboreal caatinga area in northeastern Brazil. Arthropods are potential predators of small vertebrates and researchers have reported predation events involving spiders and herpetofauna in Neotropical regions. As such, the present short communication is the second case of predation of spiders on Tropidurus lizards in Brazil, and the first for the semiarid caatinga, reinforcing the argument that large spiders have relevant roles as predators of these animals.

Natural history and population data of fishes in caves of the Serra do Ramalho karst area, Middle São Francisco basin, northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Trajano,Eleonora; Secutti,Sandro; Bichuette,Maria Elina.
During the exploration and mapping of new caves in Serra do Ramalho karst area, southern Bahia state, cavers from the Grupo Bambuí de Pesquisas Espeleológicas - GBPE (Belo Horizonte) noticed the presence of troglomorphic catfishes (species with reduced eyes and/or melanic pigmentation), which we intensively investigated with regards to their ecology and behavior since 2005. Non-troglomorphic fishes regularly found in the studied caves were included in this investigation. We present here data on the natural history of two troglobitic (exclusively subterranean troglomorphic species) fishes - Rhamdia enfurnada Bichuette & Trajano, 2005 (Heptapteridae; Gruna do Enfurnado) and Trichomycterus undescribed species (Trichomycteridae; Lapa dos Peixes and...

Natural history of Ctenus medius Keyserling, 1891 (Araneae, Ctenidae) I: observations on habitats and the development of chromatic patterns BJB
ALMEIDA,C. E.; RAMOS,E. F.; GOUVÊA,E.; CARMO-SILVA,M. do; COSTA,J..
Ctenus medius Keyserling, 1891 is a common species in several spots of Mata Atlântica, however there is a great lack of studies in all aspects of its natural history. This work aims to elucidate aspects of ecotope preference compared to large spiders, and to provide data on the development of chromatic patterns during its life cycle. The observations on the behavior of C. medius were done in the campus of Centro Universitário de Barra Mansa (UBM) by means of observations and nocturnal collections using cap lamps. For observations on the development of chromatic patterns, spiderlings raised in laboratory, hatched from an oviposition of a female from campus of UBM, and others spiderlings collected in field were used. The field observations indicate that: C....

The contribution of Latin American research to HPV epidemiology and natural history knowledge BJMBR
Sichero,L.; Picconi,M.A.; Villa,L.L..
Our aim was to review the major contributions of studies conducted in different Latin American (LA) countries to the field of human papillomavirus (HPV) epidemiology, natural history, risk of disease, and prevention strategies, mainly in the uterine cervix. Although cytological screening is established in several countries in LA, incidence and mortality rates from cervical cancer (CC) are still extremely high. Finally, data from large cohort studies conducted in LA countries provided seminal data to propose primary and secondary prevention modalities: the HPV vaccine has been introduced in the national immunization programs of several LA countries and multiple screening experiences using HPV testing are under evaluation in the region.

Abstract In the last decades, a group of viruses has received great attention due to its relationship with cancer development and its wide distribution throughout the vertebrates: the papillomaviruses. In this article, we aim to review some of the most relevant reports concerning the use of bovines as an experimental model for studies related to papillomaviruses. Moreover, the obtained data contributes to the development of strategies against the clinical consequences of bovine papillomaviruses (BPV) that have led to drastic hazards to the herds. To overcome the problem, the vaccines that we have been developing involve recombinant DNA technology, aiming at prophylactic and therapeutic procedures. It is important to point out that these strategies can be...

Description of two new species of Plesiopelma (Araneae, Theraphosidae, Theraphosinae) from Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ferretti,Nelson; Barneche,Jorge.
Two new species of Plesiopelma Pocock, 1901 from northern Argentina are described and diagnosed based on males and habitat descriptions are presented. Males of Plesiopelma paganoi sp. nov. differ from most of species by the absence of spiniform setae on the retrolateral face of cymbium, aspect of the palpal bulb. Plesiopelma aspidosperma sp. nov. differs from most species of the genus by the presence of spiniform setae on the retrolateral face of cymbium and it can be distinguished from P. myodes Pocock, 1901, P. longisternale (Schiapelli & Gerschman, 1942) and P. rectimanum (Mello-Leitão, 1923) by the separated palpal bulb keels and basal nodule of metatarsus I very developed. It differs from P. minense (Mello-Leitão, 1943) by the shape of the...

Another color morph of Sporophila Seedeater from the capuchinos group (Aves, Emberizidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Repenning,Márcio; Rovedder,Cristiano E.; Fontana,Carla S..
The genus Sporophila (Cabanis, 1844) unites about 30 species of small seedeaters that predominantly inhabit open or semi-open areas in the Neotropical region. The taxonomy of this group is based on morphological studies from collected male specimens. The dynamic spatial and temporal variation in the male plumage and lack of knowledge of their vocalizations make it difficult to properly diagnose some species even today, so these two aspects account for the existing taxonomic dilemmas involving Sporophila. During a four-year field study, we investigated the natural history of a breeding population of Sporophila melanogaster (Pelzeln, 1870). This is an endemic species in Brazil, which reproduces in the high-altitude grasslands of the Atlantic Forest biome. We...

Feeding ecology in the small neotropical amphisbaenid Amphisbaena munoai (Amphisbaenidae) in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bernardo-Silva,Jorge S.; Von-Mühlen,Eduardo M.; Di-Bernardo,Marcos; Ketterl,Jochen.
We analyzed the alimentary tract of 66 specimens of Amphisbaena munoai Klappenbach, 1969 from the Serra do Sudeste, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Forty specimens (60.6%) had prey items in their gut. The diet consisted mainly of small invertebrate prey, such as termites, insect larvae and ants. The most abundant prey item was termites, found in 62.5% of the non empty stomachs. The high number of individual prey items in the majority of stomachs, the small size of the regular prey items, and the absence of gut content in specimens of A. munoai kept alive for about two days, indicate that this species forages very frequently. The predominance of fossorial prey items and the occasional records of nomadic ants lead us to suggest that A. munoai...

Population biology of Eudendrium caraiuru (Cnidaria, Anthoathecata, Eudendriidae) from São Sebastião Channel, Southeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Otto M. P.; Marques,Antonio C..
The ecology of Eudendrium spp. from the Brazilian coast is poorly known, although it already proved to be useful and important as a tool to solve some taxonomical problems of the genus. The seasonality and reproduction patterns of a population of Eudendrium caraiuru Marques & Oliveira, 2003 were studied. Data were sampled from test panels immersed in the water off Cabelo Gordo de Dentro beach, in São Sebastião Channel, Southeastern Brazil, from July 1999 to July 2000, every three months. Eudendrium caraiuru was active throughout the study period. Reproductive peaks of the species were regulated by cold and low-salinity water, although part of the population always bore mature gonophores. In addition to morphological differences, ecological...

Aspects of reproduction and sexual dimorphism of Lygophis flavifrenatus (Dipsadidae: Xenodontinae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Quintela,Fernando Marques; Loebmann,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Lygophis flavifrenatus Cope, 1862 is a terrestrial dispsadid distributed in subtropical Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Herein, we present data on sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of this very poorly studied species. A total of 108 specimens (55 females, 50 males, three hatchlings with unidentified sex) from Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul were analyzed. Sexual dimorphism by size, body dimensions (tail length, head length, head width) and a number of ventral and subcaudal scales is not well marked in the species. Mature females attain the greater size and have a higher number of ventral scales than mature males. Mature males, in turn, presented longer tail, longer and wider head and...

Nests of Oligoryzomys sp. and Holochilus brasiliensis (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in eastern Entre Ríos Province, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Udrizar Sauthier,Walter O.; Abba,Agustín M.; Udrizar Sauthier,Daniel E..
We describe the structure and location of nests built by Oligoryzomys sp. and Holochilus brasiliensis in eastern Entre Ríos Province, Argentina. Nests were associated with water bodies. Nests of Oligoryzomys sp. averaged 18 cm length, 8 cm width, and 10 cm height and were found at elevated sites, while nests of H. brasiliensis were a few centimetres above water surface and had an ellipsoid shape with a mean size of 22.5 cm length, 13 cm width, and 18.7 cm height. A seasonal nest building pattern was observed that might indicate that these species construct their nests during spring and summer for breeding. Knowing the biology of these potential pest species of economic and public health importance in a natural environment will help defining an effective...

Observations on the natural history of Abrocoma sp. (Rodentia, Abrocomidae) in a Polylepis woodland in Bolivia Mastozool. neotrop.
Tarifa,Teresa; Azurduy,Carola; Vargas,Renzo R.; Huanca,Noemí; Terán,Jehizon; Arriaran,Greissy; Salazar,Claudia; Terceros,Lenny.
We report four opportunistic field observations of a species of Abrocoma in Polylepis besseri woodlands in Cochabamba Department, Bolivia. These observations suggest four significant aspects of Abrocoma sp. natural history: 1) they have arboreal activity, 2) they may be specialized herbivores that feed on Polylepis leaves, 3) they have diurnal activity, and 4) they have docile behavior. These observations represent the first descriptions of aspects of the behavior and ecology of an abrocomid in Bolivia, and also suggest that Polylepis woodlands, a threatened Andean habitat, may provide an important habitat for specialized mammal herbivores such as Abrocoma sp.
