Etude de nouvelles cibles moleculaires de cancer bronchopulmonaire non a petites cellules pharmacomodulées par des substances originales naturelles et synthetiques ArchiMer
Moreau, Dimitri.
Still rare disease at the beginning of the 20th century, the lung cancer is at the origin of more than 6 % of the deaths in France currently. It occupies there the first rank of the deaths by cancer whereas France is regarded as a country at the average risk among the Western countries. The discovery of new anti-cancer treatments increasingly more effective and specific, is thus today of primary importance. The validation of the capacity of a molecule to being able to inhibit the cancerous proliferation, passes by several stages of tests starting with the description of an activity at the cellular level. One of the strategies used for the discovery of new compounds antiproliferativs, passes by an investigation of the bioactiv potential of a great number...

What lies underneath: Conserving the oceans' genetic resources ArchiMer
Arrieta, Jesus M.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Duarte, Carlos M..
The marine realm represents 70% of the surface of the biosphere and contains a rich variety of organisms, including more than 34 of the 36 living phyla, some of which are only found in the oceans. The number of marine species used by humans is growing at unprecedented rates, including the rapid domestication of marine species for aquaculture and the discovery of natural products and genes of medical and biotechnological interest in marine biota. The rapid growth in the human appropriation of marine genetic resources (MGRs), with over 18,000 natural products and 4,900 patents associated with genes of marine organisms, with the latter growing at 12% per year, demonstrates that the use of MGRs is no longer a vision but a growing source of biotechnological and...

New Sulfur-Containing Polyarsenicals from the New Caledonian Sponge Echinochalina bargibanti ArchiMer
Tahtinen, Petri; Guella, Graziano; Saielli, Giacomo; Debitus, Cecile; Hnawia, Edouard; Mancini, Ines.
Arsenicin A (C3H6As4O3) was isolated from the New Caledonian poecilosclerid sponge Echinochalina bargibanti, and described as the first natural organic polyarsenic compound. Further bioguided fractionation of the extracts of this sponge led us to isolate the first sulfur-containing organic polyarsenicals ever found in Nature. These metabolites, called arsenicin B and arsenicin C, are built on a noradamantane-type framework that is characterized by an unusual As-As bonding. Extensive NMR measurements, in combination with mass spectra, enabled the assignment of the structure for arsenicin B (C3H6As4S2) as 2. The scarcity of arsenicin C and its intrinsic chemical instability only allowed the collection of partial spectral data, which prevented the full...

Effects of Nitrogen Availability on the Antioxidant Activity and Carotenoid Content of the Microalgae Nephroselmis sp ArchiMer
Coulombier, Noémie; Nicolau, Elodie; Le Déan, Loic; Barthelemy, Vanille; Schreiber, Nathalie; Brun, Pierre; Lebouvier, Nicolas; Jauffrais, Thierry.
Nephroselmis sp. was previously identified as a species of interest for its antioxidant properties owing to its high carotenoid content. In addition, nitrogen availability can impact biomass and specific metabolites’ production of microalgae. To optimize parameters of antioxidant production, Nephroselmis sp. was cultivated in batch and continuous culture conditions in stirred closed photobioreactors under different nitrogen conditions (N-repletion, N-limitation, and N-starvation). The aim was to determine the influence of nitrogen availability on the peroxyl radical scavenging activity (oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay) and carotenoid content of Nephroselmis sp. Pigment analysis revealed a specific and unusual photosynthetic system with...

Anti-inflammatory activity of propolis extracts: a review J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
Almeida,E. C. de; Menezes,H..
Since primeval times, the inflammatory process has been described in many different ways. Several anti-inflammatory therapies have been used in different biological models. However, in a recent "back to nature move", modern man is searching for natural products with medicinal properties, particularly those obtained from plants and bees. Propolis has been used in folk medicine for a very long time. The many compounds present in propolis require investigation.Physical-chemical analysis studies have not sufficiently established quality standards of propolis containing products. These standards should depend especially on their different pharmacological activities. There are few studies reporting on the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of propolis...

THE CONTINUING VALUE OF NATURALPRODUCTS FOR DRUG DISCOVERY Rev Salud Anim.
Harvey,Alan L.
Natural products are the most consistently successful source of drug leads, both historically and currently. Despite this, the use of natural products in industrial drug discovery has fallen out of favour. Natural products are likely to continue to be sources of new commercially viable drug leads because the chemical novelty associated with natural products is higher than that of any other source: this is particularly important when searching for lead molecules against newly discovered targets for which there are no known small molecule leads. Despite the commonly held assumptions, natural products can be a more economical source of chemical diversity compared with synthesis of equivalent numbers of diverse chemicals. Additionally, natural products that...
