Effect of Amnion-Wrapped Allogenic Nerve Bridging on Peripheral Nerve Injury International Journal of Morphology
Zhang,Yan-Ru; Zhang,Ge-Chen; Liu,Qiu-Hao; Wang,Yi-Sheng.
This work aims to investigate the effect of fetal amnion-wrapped acellular allogenic nerve transplantation on peripheral nerve injury (PNI) in dogs and to explore its advantages and feasibility in PNI repair. A total of 15 dogs were divided into three groups: the allogenic nerve transplantation (A), amnion-wrapped allogenic nerve transplantation (B), and allogenic nerve donor (C) groups. Neurite counts after myelin and H-E stainings, soleus muscle action potentials, and sciatic nerve conductive velocities were compared between the A and B groups at 16 w after operation. The B group showed better nerve regeneration than the A group at 16 w. Compared with the A group, the B group showed a better growth continuity of the transplanted nerve and milder...

Local regulation of the axonal phenotype, a case of merotrophism Biol. Res.
COURT,FELIPE A; ÁLVAREZ,JAIME.
In this essay, we show that several anatomical features of the axon, namely, microtubular content, caliber and extension of sprouts, correlate on a local basis with the particular condition of the glial cell, i.e., the anatomy of axons is dynamic, although it is seen usually in its `normal' state. The occurrence of ribosomes and messenger RNAs in the axon suggests that axoplasmic proteins are most likely synthesized locally, at variance with the accepted notion that they are supplied by the cell body. We propose that the supporting cell (oligodendrocyte or Schwann cell) regulates the axonal phenotype by fine-tuning the ongoing axonal protein synthesis.

Stretch-induced nerve injury: a proposed technique for the study of nerve regeneration and evaluation of the influence of gabapentin on this model BJMBR
Machado,J.A.; Ghizoni,M.F.; Bertelli,J.; Teske,Gabriel C.; Teske,Guilherme C.; Martins,D.F.; Mazzardo-Martins,L.; Cargnin-Ferreira,E.; Santos,A.R.S.; Piovezan,A.P..
The rat models currently employed for studies of nerve regeneration present distinct disadvantages. We propose a new technique of stretch-induced nerve injury, used here to evaluate the influence of gabapentin (GBP) on nerve regeneration. Male Wistar rats (300 g; n=36) underwent surgery and exposure of the median nerve in the right forelimbs, either with or without nerve injury. The technique was performed using distal and proximal clamps separated by a distance of 2 cm and a sliding distance of 3 mm. The nerve was compressed and stretched for 5 s until the bands of Fontana disappeared. The animals were evaluated in relation to functional, biochemical and histological parameters. Stretching of the median nerve led to complete loss of motor function up to...

Retinoic acid protects from experimental cerebral infarction by upregulating GAP-43 expression BJMBR
Li,Y.; Gao,X.; Wang,Q.; Yang,Y.; Liu,H.; Zhang,B.; Li,L..
The aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous retinoic acid (RA) can upregulate the mRNA and protein expression of growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43), thereby promoting brain functional recovery in a rat distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of ischemia. A total of 216 male Sprague Dawley rats weighing 300–320 g were divided into 3 groups: sham-operated group, MCAO+vehicle group and MCAO+RA group. Focal cortical infarction was induced with a distal MCAO model. The expression of GAP-43 mRNA and protein in the ipsilateral perifocal region was assessed using qPCR and immunocytochemistry at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after distal MCAO. In addition, an intraperitoneal injection of RA was given 12 h before MCAO and continued...

Non-neuronal cells are not the limiting factor for the low axonal regeneration in C57BL/6J mice BJMBR
Oliveira,A.L.R.; Langone,F..
Peripheral axonal regeneration was investigated in adult male mice of the C57BL/6J (C), BALB/cJ (B) and A/J (A) strains and in their F1 descendants using a predegenerated nerve transplantation model. Four types of transplants were performed: 1) isotransplants between animals of the C, B and A strains; 2) donors of the C strain and recipients of the C x B and C x A breeding; 3) donors of the B strain and recipients of the C x B breeding, and 4) donors of the A strain and recipients of the C x A breeding. Donors had the left sciatic nerve transected and two weeks later a segment of the distal stump was transplanted into the recipient. Four weeks after transplantation the regenerated nerves were used to determine the total number of regenerated myelinated...
