In this paper a small and medium size firm’s network governance structure and social mechanisms of coordination were studied in the light of the model proposed by Jones et al. (1997). The governance is considered a capable tool to regulate any instability originating from divergences, trying to keep the harmony and to strengthen the trust ties within the inter-organizational networks. A case study data analysis was carried out. In so doing, the associated members and the network’s manager were interviewed. The dynamics of the network reveals some practices and elements linked with social control mechanisms such as actor’s reputation, entrant members restrict access, macro-culture and the collective sanctions over individual members. By the interpretive... |

This paper is aimed at describing and analyzing the governance structure of a network of small and medium sized businesses in the supermarket sector as well as the social control mechanisms adopted to coordinate the activities carried out by common and diverging actors, on the basis of a model proposed by Jones et al. The governance is considered a capable tool to regulate any instability originating from divergences, trying to keep the harmony and to strengthen the trust ties within the interorganizational networks. A case study data analysis was carried out. In so doing, the associated members and the network’s manager were interviewed. The dynamics of the network reveals some practices and elements linked with social control mechanisms such as... |

This article contributes to the general understanding of governance in networks and the achievement of private and common goals. Integrating transaction costs and social network theory, a simple integrated framework is provided for understanding why firms collaborate and under which conditions they establish durable networks that succeed in achieving goals. Network theory is extended by explicitly distinguishing between firm and network level governance, and by identifying governance mechanisms that adapt, coordinate, and safeguard customized exchanges. This way issues as how networks evolve, how they are governed, and ultimately, how collective outcomes might be generated can be better comprehended. This is especially relevant to policy planners and those... |

Over the past decade, the policy and scholarly communities have increasingly recognized the need for governance of water-related issues at the global level. There has been major progress in the achievement of international goals related to the provision of basic water and some progress on sanitation services. However, the water challenge is much broader than securing supply. Doubts have been raised about the effectiveness of some of the existing governance processes, in the face of trends such as the unsustainable use of water resources, the increasing pressure imposed by climate change, or the implications of population growth for water use in food and energy production. Conflicts between different water uses and users are increasing, and the state of... |

In the face of apparent failures to govern complex environmental problems by the central state, new modes of governance have been proposed in recent years. Network governance is an emerging concept that has not yet been consolidated. In network governance, processes of (collective) learning become an essential feature. The key issue approached here is the mutual relations between network structure and learning, with the aim of improving environmental management. Up to now, there have been few attempts to apply social network analysis (SNA) to learning and governance issues. Moreover, little research exists that draws on structural characteristics of networks as a whole, as opposed to actor-related network measures. Given the ambiguities of the concepts at... |
