Emissary Foramens of the Human Skull: Anatomical Characteristics and its Relations with Clinical Neurosurgery International Journal of Morphology
Freire,Alexandre Rodrigues; Rossi,Ana Cláudia; de Oliveira,Viviane Cristina Souza; Prado,Felippe Bevilacqua; Caria,Paulo Henrique Ferreira; Botacin,Paulo Roberto.
The recognition of emissary foramens is important not only for understanding the regional neurovascular anatomy, but also to distinguish normal from potentially abnormal structures. Thus, the aim of this study was to review the literature on anatomical and clinical aspects of the mastoid, parietal and sphenoid emissary foramens. It was found that the emissary foramen presents importance in clinical practice because it acts as a route of spread of extracranial infection to the intracranial structures and also possible complications in neurosurgery, due to its influence in the performance of techniques such as radiofrequency rhizotomy for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. The anatomical knowledge of the emissary foramens is important due to variability in...

Partial lateral corpectomy associated with pediculectomy to treat extradural chondroma in a dog: technique description Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Marinho,P.V.T.; Zani,C.C.; Jark,P.C.; Minto,B.W.; Costa,M.T..
This study aimed to describe in detail the surgical technique of partial lateral corpectomy (PLC) associated with pediculectomy to treat an in vitroextradural chondroma. A 12-year old female Cocker Spaniel was seen in the hospital with proprioceptive ataxia of hind limbs associated with extradural compression between the 1st and 2nd lumbar vertebrae. The owner opted for euthanasia since the patient's condition changed due to simultaneous illnesses that culminated in a poor prognosis. The patient's body was formally ceded to perform experimental spinal decompression. The technique was effective to completely remove the epidural mass with minimal manipulation of the spinal cord.

Mortality rate in patients with nosocomial Acinetobacter meningitis from a Brazilian hospital BJID
Tuon,Felipe Francisco; Penteado-Filho,Sergio R; Amarante,Diogo; Andrade,Marcio A; Borba,Luis A.
BACKGROUND: The mortality rate due to Acinetobacter baumannii nosocomial meningitis (ANM) is high. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors that have influence over the outcomes in ANM patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 22 cases of ANM was conducted in a hospital with high incidence of multidrug resistance. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 43 years (21 to 91) and 54.5% were male. All ANM cases occurred within 60 days of admission and the mean duration of illness was of 18.2 days. All cases were associated with previous neurosurgical procedures: elective surgery (27.2%), external shunt (54.4%) and emergency surgery due to trauma (18.1%). Imipenem resistance was observed in 40.9% of cases, but ampicillin/sulbactam...

Implications of extubation failure and prolonged mechanical ventilation in the postoperative period following elective intracranial surgery BJMBR
Vidotto,M.C.; Sogame,L.C.; Gazzotti,M.R.; Prandini,M.; Jardim,J.R..
Patients undergoing neurosurgery are predisposed to a variety of complications related to mechanical ventilation (MV). There is an increased incidence of extubation failure, pneumonia, and prolonged MV among such patients. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of extubation failure and prolonged MV on the following variables: postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC), mortality, reoperation, tracheostomy, and duration of postoperative hospitalization following elective intra-cranial surgery. The study involved a prospective observational cohort of 317 patients submitted to elective intracranial surgery for tumors, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformation. Preoperative assessment was performed and patients were followed up for the...
