Development of rice varieties conferring broad-spectrum and durable resistance against brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the major challenges facing the plant breeders. Idea has been generated in this study for incorporating resistance genes of ovicidal response and feeding inhibition into rice breeding lines. Our initial experiments focused on discovering the ovicidal trait in indica rice cultivars. We found that some weedy rice lines had the ovicidal resistance, causing 60% to 100% egg mortality. The egg mortality rate depends on the rice developmental stages and is the highest at the maximum tillering stage. This is the first report of the ovicidal trait in indica rice lines. The BPH resistance in weedy rice lines is not only mediated by the ovicidal...

การใช้กับดักแสงไฟคาดการณ์การระบาดของเพลี้ยกระโดดสีน้ำตาลในจังหวัดปราจีนบุรี Thai Agricultural
Wannaphan Janlapha; Chalermpol Chalermpolyotin.
Major pest in irrigated rice growing area of central and lower northern region since 1975 is brown planthopper. The factors of BPH outbreak are varieties seed rate fertilizer use misuse of chemical. The monitoring of population density is very important for forecasting the BPH outbreak. Light trap, an effective tool for monitoring the outbreak of BPH was conducted in hot spot areas. Light trap was set in Prachin Buri Rice Research Center while surveying in farmers’ field in hot spot areas of outbreak in Prachin Buri province were investigated during January 2011 to December 2012. The number of BPH from light trap was counted everyday throughout the year. The results showed that light trap could collect large number of BPH. The peak of BPH in light trap...

Resistance mechanism of resistant varieties and promising lines of rice to brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Ståll) compared with standard resistance (PTB33 and Rathu Heenati) and standard susceptible (Taichung Native 1 : TN1) criteria to evaluate the reaction, the response of rice varieties and promising lines to the infestation of insects. Antixenosis resistance mechanisms, which describes a reaction dislike to eat or inhibit eating, affected to oviposition or fewer oviposition. Mechanical resistance Antibiosis explained by the percentage of surviving and development of the nymph stage to the adult, impact on the life cycle of insects and low feeding rates. Tolerance mechanisms of resistance can be explained by assessments of function plant loss...

Main Factors affecting brown planthopper (BPH) outbreaks in the Central region from past up to now are cultivations of susceptible rice varieties and misused insecticide application. The aim of this research was to prove the misused of insecticide application in the hot spot area causing BPH severe outbreak. One hundred to one hundred fifty farmers from six provinces: Nakhon Nayok, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Chai Nat, Phitsanulok and Nonthaburi were interviewed during August to November 2010. The result found 56.5 to 100 percent of farmer sprayed insecticide for two to six times/seasons. Most farmers applied insecticide, especially Abamectin as cocktails mixed with two to six types of fungicides and/or herbicides. Most farmers were sprayed insecticide when...

Survey in paddy field in 2013 amount 54 fields as follow : Mueang Chai Nat 13 fields, Manorom 6 fields, Watsing 5 fields, Sapphaya 7 fields, Sankaburi 9 fields, Hankha district 10 fields, Nakhonsawan 1 field, Uthithani 1 field, Singburi 1 field and Suphanburi province 1 field. We begin survey at 15 days after planting to 90 days and used outbreak data sets by week from Department of Agricultural Extension for decision. The survey results show that brown planthopper high in 2 times per year. The first time is in February to March in Mueang Chai Nat and Hankha district because of brown planthopper outbreak in Suphanburi, migrated to Hankha district and influence of southern wind. The second time is in July to August in Mueang Chai Nat, Hankha and Sankaburi...

ความแตกต่างในความรุนแรงของเพลี้ยกระโดดสีน้ำตาลต่อการเข้าทำลายพันธุ์ข้าว Thai Agricultural
Jate Kotcharerk; Phamorn Pattawatang.
Evaluation of the ability of rice varieties in resistance to brown plant hopper was performed using seed box screen test. The brown plant hopers (BPH) were collected from rice paddy fields in Phitsanulok, Chainat, and Ang Thong Province. From cluster analysis at level 0.8, there were three different groups classified by the different level of rice plant damage after treated by the insects. The three different level of damage were graded by the ability in resistance to the BPH as resistance, moderately resistance and susceptible. Considering in biotype of the BPH, the results indicated that there were variety of BPH biotypes in each samples collected from the three different provinces. Mainly, the biotype 4 and 5 were indentified in these samples. However,...
