Nutrition values of silages from different sorghum cultivars are evaluated. Five 26-kg castrated crossbred lambs, housed in pens equipped with feces and urine collectors for the study of their metabolism, were employed in a 5 x 5 Latin square experimental design. Treatments consisted of silage from five different sorghum cultivars: IPA 1011 and IPA 2564 (grain sorghum), IPA 2502 (dual purpose sorghum), IPA FS-25 and IPA 467 (forage sorghum). Protein level was corrected to 12% by adding a mixture of urea: ammonium sulfate (9:1). Treatments IPA 1011, IPA 2564 and IPA 2502 provided high intake of dry matter, total carbohydrate and total digestible nutrients, and low intake of neutral detergent fiber. Cultivars IPA 1011 and IPA 2564 provided high apparent...

Ammoniated babassu palm hay in anglo-nubian goat diets Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Moreira,Antonia Leidiana; Alves,Arnaud Azevêdo; Moreira Filho,Miguel Arcanjo; Silva,Daniel Cézar da; Garcez,Bruno Spíndola; Vasconcelos,Vânia Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Leaves of babassu may be used in diets for goats under maintenance, however, it is a low-quality roughage due to its high fiber content. The chemical treatment by ammonia causes reduction in the proportion of the cell wall, in addition to providing non-protein nitrogen for the microbial protein synthesis in the rumen. Babassu palm hay ammoniated with 4% urea (BHAU4%) was evaluated in this study as a substitute for guinea grass hay in the maintenance diets of goats in terms of intake, digestibility in vivo, and the partitioning of energy and nitrogen compounds. Twenty Anglo-Nubian male goats were used in a randomised block design with four treatments (diets containing 0, 33, 66, or 100% BHAU4%) and five replicates (animals/block). The chemical...

Modelo de balanço de nitrogênio para cana-de-açúcar: fase I - análise teórica e ajustes. Infoteca-e

III. Bilan azoté de systèmes polytrophes ArchiMer
Chamroux, S.; Boucher, G..
The evolution of nitrogen content in experimental closed circuit ¿and filters was followed, each tank being fed with different quantities of soluble organic matter. According to the trophic conditions, two types of metabolism could be observed : - a loss of nitrogen (denitrification), reaching almost 90% of the nitrogen input in eutrophic conditions, and close to 35% in mesotrophic conditions. - a gain in nitrogen (fixation), a predominant metabolism in oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Nitrogen retention in the sediment increases slightly with the organic matter input, but no proportionality could be established. It seems that the sediment, by its bacterial metabolisms, regulates its own organic matter richness.

The WTO, Agricultural Trade Reform and the Environment: Nitrogen and Agro-chemical Indicators for the OECD AgEcon
Rae, Allan N.; Strutt, Anna.
The WTO Ministerial Statement of November 2001 mandates work on those situations where reduction of trade restrictions would benefit both trade and the environment. To contribute to such research, we use a modified version of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model to estimate for OECD countries' changes in two environmental indicators resulting from simulated trade reforms: the impact on regional nitrogen balances, and associated changes in intensity of agro-chemical use. The trade reforms simulated lead to slightly improved nitrogen balances at the aggregate OECD level, with more ambitious trade reform resulting in a larger aggregate improvement. Most regions with a high initial per hectare nitrogen surplus are expected to experience some...
