Evidence of a relationship between weight and total length of marine fish in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean: physiological, spatial and temporal variations ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Delpech, Jean-paul; Lazard, Coline; Salaun, Michele; Verin, Yves; Coppin, Franck; Travers-trolet, Morgane.
Weight–Body Length relationships (WLR) of 45 fish species (37 Actinopterygii and eight Elasmobranchii) were investigated. A total of 31,167 individuals were caught and their biological parameters measured during the four quarters from 2013 to 2015, on five scientific surveys sampling the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (ICES Divisions IVb, IVc, VIId, VIIe, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj, VIIIa and VIIIb). Among 45 tested species, all showed a significant correlation between total length (L) and total weight (W). The influence of sex on WLR was estimated for 39 species and presented a significant sexual dimorphism for 18 species. Condition factor (K) of females was always higher than for males. Moreover, a spatial effect on the WLR...

Influence of spatial scales of observation on temporal change in diversity and trophic structure of fine-sand communities from the English Channel and the southern North Sea ArchiMer
Ghertsos, K; Luczak, C; Dewarumez, Jm; Dauvin, Jc.
Along the coast of France in the English Channel, muddy fine-sand communities are restricted to bays and estuaries, but in the southern North Sea they stretch out to larger areas (mesoscale continuum). We studied three regions containing these communities, each subject to different hydrological conditions and contrasting trophic structures of the water column. The Bay of Morlaix was strongly affected by the "Amoco Cadiz" oil spill of 1978 and recovered slowly. The Bay of Seine is influenced by high levels of nutrient input from the River Seine. A retention structure exists in the eastern part ensuring recruitment stability. The Gravelines area in the southern North Sea was invaded by the American jackknife clam (Ensis directus), which became a key species...

Delineating recurrent fish spawning habitats in the North Sea ArchiMer
Lelievre, Stephanie; Vaz, Sandrine; Martin, C. S.; Loots, Christophe.
The functional value of spawning habitats makes them critically important for the completion of fish life cycles and spawning grounds are now considered to be “essential habitats”. Inter-annual fluctuations in spawning ground distributions of dab (Limanda Limanda), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), cod (Gadus morhua) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) were investigated in the southern North Sea and eastern English Channel, from 2006 to 2009. The preferential spawning habitats of these species were modelled using generalised linear models, with egg distribution being used as proxy of spawners’ location. Egg spatial and temporal distributions were explored based on six environmental variables: sea surface temperature and salinity, chlorophyll a concentration,...

Extensive larval dispersal and restricted movement of juveniles on the nursery grounds of sole in the Southern North Sea ArchiMer
Delerue-ricard, Sophie; Darnaude, Audrey M.; Raeymaekers, Joost A.m.; Dundas, Siv Hjorth; Skadal, Julie; Volckaert, Filip A.m.; Geffen, Audrey J..
Connectivity between spawning and nursery grounds influences the colonization, replenishment and resilience of populations of marine organisms. Connectivity rate, measured as the exchange of individuals between spawning and nursery grounds, is therefore a crucial determinant of stock size. However, connectivity of early-life stages is hard to explore due to sampling limitations and insufficient knowledge on potential larval sources. Here we present new insights into pre- and post-settlement dispersal of the common sole (Solea solea L.) at a spatial scale of 5–500 km in the Southern North Sea. Patterns at a scale of <100 km were considered local, whereas patterns further than 100 km were considered regional. Multi-elemental signatures of the otolith edge...

Fast hydrodynamic model for medium- and long-term dispersion in seawater in the English Channel and southern North Sea, qualitative and quantitative validation by radionuclide tracers ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
The database for medium- and long-term model validation using Sb-125 released by the La Hague reprocessing plant includes 1400 measurements performed between 1987 and 1994 in the English Channel and the North Sea and data for each release since 1982. Antimony-125 has a conservative behaviour in water masses over a period of several years. These data can be used qualitatively and quantitatively to compare the measured concentrations with the calculated ones and quantities of tracers. Tritium measurements are also available for model calibration. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model has been developed to allow repetitive long-term simulations. This model uses a database of residual tidal currents calculated using the Lagrangian barycentric method [Salomon,...

TRANSMER, un modèle hydrodynamique rapide et précis pour la simulation à moyen et long terme des transferts de radionucléides en Manche et dans le sud de la Mer du Nord ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
TRANSMER hydrodynamic model simulates dispersion of dissolved substances in seawater at the scale of the English Channel and the south of the North Sea with a mesh size of one kilometre and a time step of 30 minutes. It has been qualitatively and quantitatively validated by 1400 measurement of 125Sb in seawater. This model evaluates the medium- and long-term consequences of releases of soluble pollutants in the marine ecosystem under normal or accidental conditions, at a very low computation cost (it takes less than one hour to simulate one year).

Les campagnes de chalutages expérimentaux en mer du Nord ArchiMer
Verin, Yves.
Since 1976, France participates to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), coordinated by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The main objective of these surveys, which are carried out on board of research vessels, was to obtain annual forecasts of recruitment for the various commercial fish species of the North Sea. These estimates were used by ICES Working Groups to assess these various stocks and to propose management measures for the following year. In addition, the data collected during these surveys concerned biological and abundance analysis of main commercial fish species exploited by European countries in the North Sea. The results of studies were published in scientific papers and have improved knowledge in this...

Synthèse des pêcheries 2000 - Flotte Mer du Nord, Manche, Atlantique ArchiMer
Berthou, Patrick; Daures, Fabienne; Guyader, Olivier; Merrien, Claude; Jezequel, Michele.
This summary of the French fisheries of the North Sea/English Channel/Atlantic for the year 2000 is done in the context of the programme "Halieutic Information Systems" that has as its goal the creation of a permanent and operational observatory of fishing. It brings together several types of data: statistical data of administrative origin, data from the IFREMER pollsters network, economic data and data acquired during sea campaigns. This first annual summary of French fisheries, meant for all actors in the fishing industry (from research to professionals and managers) and the general public, is limited to the Atlantic coast. The first part of this document contains an overall description of the English Channel Atlantic fleet, that is, all trades included....

Dissolved Radiotracers and Numerical Modeling in North European Continental Shelf Dispersion Studies (1982–2016): Databases, Methods and Applications ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck; Voiseux, Claire; Morillon, Mehdi; Oms, Pierre-emmanuel; Solier, Luc.
Significant amounts of anthropogenic radionuclides were introduced in ocean waters following nuclear atmospheric tests and development of the nuclear industry. Dispersion of artificial dissolved radionuclides has been extensively measured for decades over the North-European continental shelf. In this area, the radionuclide measurement and release fluxes databases provided here between 1982 and 2016 represent an exceptional opportunity to validate dispersion hydrodynamic models. This work gives accessibility to these data in a comprehensive database. The MARS hydrodynamic model has been applied at different scales to reproduce the measured dispersion in realistic conditions. Specific methods have been developed to obtain qualitative and quantitative results...

Estimating stock parameters from trawl cpue-at-age series using year-class curves ArchiMer
Cotter, A; Mesnil, Benoit; Piet, G.
A year-class curve is a plot of log cpue (catch per unit effort) over age for a single year class of a species (in contrast to the better known catch curve, fitted to multiple year classes at one time). When linear, the intercept and slope estimate the log cpue at age 0 and the average rate of total mortality, Z, respectively. Here, we suggest methodological refinements within a linear least squares framework. Candidate models may include a selectivity term, fleet-specific parameters, and polynomials in year to allow for gradual variations of Z. An iterative weighting method allows for differing precisions among the different fleets, and a forward (one-step ahead) validation procedure tests predicted cpue against observed values. Choice of the best...

Assessment of contaminant concentrations in sediments, fish and mussels sampled from the North Atlantic and European regional seas within the ICON project ArchiMer
Robinson, Craig D.; Webster, Lynda; Martinez-gomez, Concepcion; Burgeot, Thierry; Gubbins, Matthew J.; Thain, John E.; Vethaak, A. Dick; Mcintosh, Alistair D.; Hylland, Ketil.
Understanding the status of contaminants in the marine environment is a requirement of European Union Directives and the Regional Seas Conventions, so that measures to reduce pollution can be identified and their efficacy assessed. The international ICON workshop (Hylland et al., in this issue) was developed in order to test an integrated approach to assessing both contaminant concentrations and their effects. This paper describes and assesses the concentrations of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments, mussels, and fish collected from estuarine, coastal and offshore waters from Iceland to the Mediterranean Sea. For organic contaminants, concentrations progressively increased from Iceland, to the...

Morphospecies and taxonomic sufficiency of benthic megafauna in scientific bottom trawl surveys ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Laffargue, Pascal; Morin, Jocelyne; Vaz, Sandrine; Foveau, Aurelie; Le Bris, Herve.
Scientific fisheries surveys routinely identify a large diversity of commercial and non-commercial benthic megainvertebrates that could provide useful information for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) descriptors. Species is obviously the basic taxonomic level to which most ecological studies and theories refer. Identification at this level of organization is indeed always preferred over any other taxonomic level. Nevertheless, aggregation of species to higher taxonomic levels may be unavoidable sometimes, since errors of identification are known or suspected to occur in many surveys. Using analyses of taxonomic sufficiency (identification of organisms at various taxonomic resolutions) and groups of morphospecies (taxa identified easily by...

Spatial interactions between saithe (Pollachius virens) and hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the North Sea ArchiMer
Cormon, Xochitl; Loots, Christophe; Vaz, Sandrine; Vermard, Youen; Marchal, Paul.
Spatial interactions between saithe (Pollachius virens) and hake (Merluccius merluccius) were investigated in the North Sea. Saithe is a well-established species in the North Sea, while occurrence of the less common hake has recently increased in the area. Spatial dynamics of these two species and their potential spatial interactions were explored using binomial generalized linear models (GLM) applied to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) data from 1991 to 2012. Models included different types of variables: (i) abiotic variables including sediment types, temperature, and bathymetry; (ii) biotic variables including potential competitors and potential preys presence; and (iii) spatial variables. The models were reduced and used to predict and map...

Les stocks de poissons démersaux sous quota

Mellon, Capucine.
Cod (Gadus morhua, L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus, L.), saithe (Pollachius virens, L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus, L.), sole (Solea vulgaris, L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) make up the main demersal stocks under quota which concern the French fishery in North Sea and Eastern English Channel. The diagnosis on the state of stocks are set up at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Recommendations which result from the analyses are proposed to the European Union. Most of the stocks are close or outside their safe biological limits. Several reasons account for that such as the high fishing mortality rates and mixed fisheries on species with diverse biological characteristics. Consequently, more and more young...

Reconciling single-species TACs in the North Sea demersal fisheries using the Fcube mixed-fisheries advice framework ArchiMer
Ulrich, Clara; Reeves, Stuart A.; Vermard, Youen; Holmes, Steven J.; Vanhee, Willy.
Single-species management is a cause of discarding in mixed fisheries, because individual management objectives may not be consistent with each other and the species are caught simultaneously in relatively unselective fishing operations. As such, the total allowable catch (TAC) of one species may be exhausted before the TAC of another, leading to catches of valuable fish that cannot be landed legally. This important issue is, however, usually not quantified and not accounted for in traditional management advice. A simple approach using traditional catch and effort information was developed, estimating catch potentials for distinct fleets (groups of vessels) and metiers (type of activity), and hence quantifying the risks of over-and underquota utilization...

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. Regional metier definition: a comparative investigation of statistical methods using a workflow applied to international otter trawl fisheries in the North Sea ArchiMer
Deporte, Nicolas; Ulrich, Clara; Mahevas, Stephanie; Demaneche, Sebastien; Bastardie, Francois.
The European Common Fisheries Policy recognizes the importance of accounting for heterogeneity in fishing practices, and metier-based sampling is now at the core of the EU Data Collection Framework. The implementation of such an approach would require Member States to agree on the standard regional metier definitions and on practical rules to categorize logbook records into metiers. Several alternative approaches have been used in the past to categorize landings profiles, but no consensus has yet emerged. A generic open-source workflow is developed to test and compare a selection of methods, including principal components analysis (PCA), hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC), K-means, and Clustering LARge Applications (CLARA), and to provide simple...
