In Brazil, thalidomide is manufactured by a public laboratory, distributed by the Unified Health System (SUS), and regulated by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). Despite the concerns regarding the adverse effects of thalidomide, few drug utilization studies have been conducted to describe processes and outcomes related to this drug. The aim of this study was to elucidate the issues related to the utilization and control of thalidomide, and patient safety within the scope of SUS. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the articulation between an outpatient dermatology service of a referral hospital in infectology, the manufacturer, and Anvisa. Four data sources were used: i) interviews with health professionals; ii) data from the... |

Current monitoring of exceptional mortality events of oysters in France consists in passive surveillance, leading to delayed investigation of causation by scientists and management by policy makers. Early detection of clusters of mortality events in time and space would increase possibilities for their investigation and management. A space-time cluster analysis of existing mortality notifications in Pacific oysters was conducted in France, Charente sluices, from 2008 to 2010. As an example of potential demographic confounder of clustering, the analyses were adjusted on oyster age. Several clusters were identified in space and time each studied year. Patterns of mortality notifications were consistent with the introduction and spread of a contagious disease... |

Farmers’ vigilance is essential for the detection of epidemics, including potential emerging diseases, in marine shellfish. A field study was conducted to investigate oyster farmers’ reporting practices and behaviour, and to identify factors influencing the reporting process of oyster mortality, with the ultimate aim of improving early detection of unexplained oyster mortality outbreaks. A retrospective case-control study of oyster farmers from Charente-Maritime (France) was designed, based on interviews with 27 non-reporting and 89 reporting farmers, further split into 40 formerly-reporting and 49 currently-reporting farmers. Information about farmer and farm characteristics, farming practices, farm health history and related financial compensation on... |
