A comprehensive model is developed to measure the extent that nutrition knowledge and diet-health awareness, among other factors, influence an individual's Healthy Eating Index (HEI), USDA's measure of overall diet quality. This is the first study that rigorously attempts to examine variation in the index across population groups by controlling for personal and household characteristics and nutrition information levels, as well as test for the endogeneity of nutrition information. Results indicate that one's level of nutrition information has an important influence on one's HEI and that nutrition information and the HEI are simultaneously determined. Other factors explaining variations in HEI's across individuals are income and education levels, race,... |

The main objective of this study was to analyze the pattern of nutrient intake in major metropolitan region of Brazil, seeking to identify the nutrient intake adequacy in the Brazilian families, and their evolution over time. The Almost Ideal System (AIDS) model was employed to estimate the demand for nutrients. The data used are from the Household Budget Survey of 1995 and 2003. The results indicated that the nutrient demand of the population has poor sensitivity to changes in prices. In addition, families tend to demand relatively more fat, cholesterol and carbohydrates than vitamins and minerals. It was found that there was worsening in the pattern of intake for most nutrients from 1995 to 2003, in relation to daily nutrient recommendations. Thus,... |

Melon is one of the most demanding cucurbits regarding fertilization, requiring knowledge of soils, crop nutritional requirements, time of application, and nutrient use efficiency for proper fertilization. Developing support systems for decision-making for fertilization that considers these variables in nutrient requirement and supply is necessary. The objective of this study was parameterization of a fertilizer recommendation system for melon (Ferticalc-melon) based on nutritional balance. To estimate fertilizer recommendation, the system considers the requirement subsystem (REQ), which includes the demand for nutrients by the plant, and the supply subsystem (SUP), which corresponds to the supply of nutrients through the soil and irrigation water. After... |
