The interspecific hybrid, Elaeis oleifera x Elaeis guineensis (OxG) is an alternative for improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the Latin American oil palm agro-industry, because of its partial resistance to some lethal diseases and also because of the high quality of its oil. A comparative characterization was conducted of the physiological and biochemical performance of seedlings of six OxG hybrids grown in hydroponics. Gas exchange, vegetative growth, protein, sugar and photosynthetic pigment content, and antioxidant system activity were determined. With the exception of gas exchange, the other variables showed significant differences between materials. The ´U1273´ and ´U1737´ materials showed greater vegetative growth with no expression... |

The production of inoculum is one of the hindrances in the large scale application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of nutrient solutions with or without Tris-HCl buffer, on sporulation of AMF. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, using a substrate with sand and vermiculite (1:1 v/v). Fifty spores of Gigaspora margarita, Scutellospora heterogama, and Glomus etunicatum were inoculated in Sorghum vulgare (sorghum) or Panicum miliaceum (fodder millet). The substrate received the following nutrient solutions: Hoagland with 3 muM P (S1); Long Ashton II with 15.9 muM P (S2) and Hoagland with 20 muM P (S3), with or without 50 mM of Tris-HCl buffer (pH 6.5); the control treatment, consisting of... |

We conducted experiments designed to assess whether plants can be grown under conditions of low ionic strength simulating natural soil conditions. Wheat (Triticum aestivum, cv. Atlas 66) plants were grown using ten different relative nutrient addition rates (RAR) of nutrients (0.00, 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, 0.21, 0.24, 0.27, and 0.30 day-1) with a background solution containing 50 µmol.L-1 N and all other essential nutrients in optimal proportions relative to N. The relative growth rate (RGR) of plants over a 19-day experimental period responded directly to RAR (from 0.06 to 0.21 day-1) with a linear slope of 0.56 and an intercept of 0.085 day-1. Solution electrical conductivity (EC) values remained relatively stable over the experimental period. We... |

ABSTRACT Cultivation using brackish waters can result in nutritional and metabolic imbalances in several plant species, consequently reducing the production of dry matter (DM) and accumulation of toxic ions (Na+ and/or Cl-) in plants. We evaluated the DM production, and nutrient and inorganic solute (Na+ and Cl-) content in green onion plants (cv. Todo Ano Evergreen - Nebuka) under different levels of nutrient solution salinity in combination with circulation frequencies of this solution. Two experiments were conducted in a hydroponic system, using a completely randomized design, in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, with five replicates: six levels of nutrient solution salinity (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5, and 9.0 dS m-1) and two solution circulation frequencies... |

Chicory plants, cv. 'Amarelo' and 'Pão de Açúcar', were grown hydroponically under four NaCl concentrations in the nutrient solution to determine its tolerance to salinity. Sowing was made in rows placed 0.05m apart, on a 0.15m deep sand growing bed placed over fibber cement tiles. After emergence, plants were thinned to a plant density of 1,600plants m-2. A standard nutrient solution was used, with the main composition of, in mmol L-1, 13.5 NO3-; 2.5 NH4+; 1.5 H2PO4-; 1.5 SO4--; 7.5 Ca++; 10.0 K+ and 1.5 Mg++. The control (T1) was the standard nutrient solution, without addition of NaCl. Four salinity levels were compared, by adding 0.697 (T2), 1.627 (T3), 2.556 (T4) and 3.485 (T5)g L-1 of NaCl. The nutrient solution was delivered to plants four times a... |

ABSTRACT The underground water reserves in the semi-arid region present high salinity levels. However, the scarcity of the resource compels the use of this water for several human activities, including agriculture. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of brackish water for watercress cultivation (Nasturtium officinale) in a hydroponic NFT system (laminar flow of nutrients) and effects on water consumption, growth, yield and nutrient extraction by the plant. We studied six levels of salinity (0.2; 1.2; 2.2; 3.2; 4.2 and 5.2 dS m-1), in a completely randomized experimental design, with four replicates. Salinity was obtained by the addition of NaCl into the local water supply, being these waters used to prepare the nutrient solution and to replace the... |

Suction cups are the only viable method to obtain in situ the soil solution along the culture in real time (24 h). The soil solution is the objective criterion to modify the nutrient solution, so that it can be an appropriate tool for fertirrigation management. The nutrient levels of the soil solution must be known to establish the appropriate approach to nutrients management. In this work, levels of pH, EC,NO3-,NH4+, H+2PO4- , K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and Cl- of the soil solution of three tomato crops were followed for periods 1995/96 and 1996/97 culture estimated in a trial carried out during two years. |

Eucalyptus requires large amounts of nitrogen (N); however, it responds in diverse manners to the application of this nutrient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differential performance in growth, mineral nutrition, and gas exchanges of N-fertilized Eucalyptus clones. The treatments consisted of two Eucalyptus clones (VM-01 and I-144) and six N application rates (0, 0.74, 2.93, 4.39, 5.85, and 8 mmol L-1 NH4NO3) arranged in a randomized complete block design with five replications. VM-01 had greater plant height and greater height/collar diameter ratio, as well as higher leaf concentrations of all macronutrients and of Cu, Fe, Mo, and Zn. In terms of total and root dry matter production, root/shoot ratio, and collar diameter, as well as stomatal... |

ABSTRACT Given the increase in crop yields and the expansion of agriculture in low fertility soils, deficiency of micronutrients, such as iron, in plants grown in tropical soils has been observed. The aim of this study was to evaluate Fe availability and Fe uptake by corn (Zea mays L.) plants in 13 different soils, at two depths. Iron was extracted by Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3, and CaCl2 (Fe-CC) and was fractionated in forms related to low (Feo) and high (Fed) crystallinity pedogenic oxyhydroxides, and organic matter (Fep) using ammonium oxalate, dithionite-citrate, and sodium pyrophosphate, respectively. In order to relate Fe availability to soil properties and plant growth, an experiment was carried out in a semi-hydroponic system in which part of the roots... |
