Sensitivity of soil phosphorus tests in predicting the potential risk of phosphorus loss from pasture soil Organic Eprints

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of urine and dung additions on the phosphorus (P) chemistry of pasture land and to compare the sensitivity of two soil extraction methods in assessing the P-loading risk. In a field experiment, urine and dung were added to soil in amounts corresponding to single excrement portions and the soil samples, taken at certain intervals, were analysed for pHH2O, acid ammonium acetate extractable P (PAc) and water extractable total P (TPw), and molybdate reactive P (MRPw). Urine additions immediately increased soil pH and MRPw, but no such response was observed in PAc extraction due to the low pH (4.65) of the extractant enhancing the resorption of P. Mikromineralinnhold i jord og planter - mikromineralforsyning til drøvtyggere i økologisk landbruk Organic Eprints

For alle mineralene unntatt klor var det et høgere innhold i 2. slått enn i 1. slått. Flere av planteprøvene viste så lavt innhold av ett eller flere makromineral at det antagelig reduserte avlingsnivået. Ut fra mineralbehovet hos sau og storfe viste plante- og blodprøver at flere av besetningene hadde liten tilførsel av svovel, fosfor, selen og E-vitamin, mens tilførselen av magnesium, kobolt og kopper var tilfredsstillende. Videre bearbeidelse av innsamla datamateriell og utprøving av ulike selentilskudd til jord og planter vil danne grunnlaget for å trekke endelig konklusjoner i forskningsprogrammet, samt utarbeide praktiske råd om mineraltilførsel til planter og drøvtyggere i økologisk landbruk.

Grass-legume mixtures characterized by high productivity, efficient nitrogen (N) use and strong weed suppression were proposed to increase sustainability of grassland production. Adding competitive forbs to grassclover mixtures can be expected to further enhance the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures. This study investigates whether and to what extent adding forbs to a grass-clover mixture results in yield gains, and estimates the contributions of forb species (identity effect) and interactions with the grass-clover mixture (diversity effect) to these gains. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. Carbon, nitrogen and energy flows are considered as an appropriate basis to characterize farming systems and to evaluate the environmental effects. Using the model REPRO the carbon and nitrogen flows of the experimental farm “Klostergut Scheyern” have been evaluated since 1991 on the basis of complete cultivation data as well as with the help of detailed site and weather data. Thus “Scheyern” is characterised as an intensive organic farming system with a high turnover of C and N.

Effects of organic versus conventional farming on different chemical soil parameters in Estonia Organic Eprints

A five-year experiment results, have shown that fertilizer amendments are needed for preserving the nutrient balance in the soil. A combination of cattle and green manure, crop rotation and other organic farming practices, with chemical fertilizer amendments could suppose a sustainable solution for maintaining a correct nutrient balance in the soil in long term, better than both farming systems, conventional and organic, by separate.

Einfluss der Zugabe von Rohphosphat in den Biogasfermenter auf die Düngewirkung fermentierter Rindergülle [Influence of adding phosphate to the biogas fermenter on the fertilization effect of fermented liquid cattle manure] Organic Eprints

Durch die Vergärung von Gülle wird eine deutlich stärkere ertragssteigernde Direktwirkung von Gülle erzielt. Die Nachwirkung war nach zwei Schnitten vergleichbar hoch. Die Verfügbarkeit von N und P steigt mit der Vergärung proportional zueinander. Ein Aufschluss von Rohphosphaten durch die Fermentation konnte nicht erzielt werden. Die Zugabe von leicht abbaubarem organischem Material führte zu keiner höheren Verfügbarkeit von N und P aus dem Grundsubstrat Gülle bzw. aus den zugeführten Rohphosphaten.

Effects of timing of sulfur application and nitrogen fertilization on yield and quality of barley Organic Eprints

The effect of S and N application on the redistribution of S and the effect of N application and time of S application (from sowing to the middle of heading) on yield and quality of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was investigated in pot experiments. Nitrogen and sulphur had a clear interactive effect on the yield of all plant parts with little or no effect of S at low N application rates and similar low effect of N without S application. About 70% of leaf N was redistributed to the ears in plants growing at adequate S supply compared with about 35% of leaf N in S-deficient plants. Växtnäringens flöde genom jordbruk och samhälle – vägar att sluta kretsloppen Organic Eprints

I dag går större delen av den växtnäring som tillförs jordbruket förlorat till luft och vatten eller binds i marken. Detta innebär en kostnad för jordbruket och leder samtidigt till skador på den omgivande miljön. Jordbruket bedöms svara för över 40 procent av kväveläckaget till Östersjön. Kväveförlusterna till luften i form av ammoniak bidrar också till övergödningen och det sura nedfallet. Målsättningen att halvera kväveförlusterna från jordbruket har inte uppnåtts. Trots att det är endast en liten del av fosforöverskottet i jordbruket som läcker ut i vattendragen har även detta skadliga konsekvenser för miljön i form av övergödning av sjöar, vattendrag och hav. Die Stickstoffverluste aus der schweizerischen Landwirtschaft sind trotz der abnehmenden Tendenz in den letzten Jahren noch immer zu hoch. Die mengenmässig bedeutsamsten Verluste sind Ammoniakemissionen und Nitratauswaschung. Handlungsbedarf besteht insbesondere bei den Ammoniakverlusten, die weniger stark abgenommen haben als die Nitratauswaschung. Jordlevende sopp vokser som lange trådformede strukturer kalt hyfer. Når flere hyfer vokser sammen dannes et hvitaktig mycel som vi kan se med det blotte øye. Sopp har ikke klorofyll og må derfor skaffe seg næring på annet vis. Det gjør de ved å hente næring fra organisk materiale i jorda, fra å bryte ned ferske planterester på overflaten og/eller ved å leve i samliv (symbiose)med levende planterøtter (bildet. Selv om man kan se store og små sopper på overflaten, er det alltid slik at mesteparten av soppen finnes under jordoverflaten.

The contribution of grass and clover root turnover to N leaching Organic Eprints

Sources of inorganic and organic N leaching from grass-clover mixtures at field sites in Denmark, Germany and Iceland were investigated. Grass or clover was labelled with 15N-urea four times (autumn 2007, spring, summer and autumn 2008) prior to the leaching season in autumn and winter 2008. Soil water was sampled at 30 cm depth and analyzed for 15N-enrichment of dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON). Most 15N was recovered in DON for both labelled grass and clover at all sites. At the Danish site, grass and clover contributed more to the DON pool than the DIN whereas the opposite was observed at the German and Icelandic sites. In einem Feldversuch auf zwei Standorten (Lehm, Sand) wurde in zwei Serien der Einfluss der Stroh-Aufbereitung auf dessen Umsatz im Boden untersucht. Die untersuchten Düngervarianten umfassten: Stroh (STR) sowie Stroh mit zusätzlicher Stickstoffgabe in Form von Hühnertrockenkot (STR+N), Rottemist (RM) und flüssigem, wie trockenem Gärrest (GRflüssig, GRtrocken) aus der Strohvergärung mit Hühnertrockenkot. Das Stroh der Varianten STR und STR+N wurde nach Ernte der Vorfrucht (Sommergetreide) eingearbeitet. Die restlichen Varianten wurden im Frühjahr appliziert. Çalışma 2001-2010 yıllarında Ege Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Menemen Araştırma Uygulama ve Üretim Çiftliğinin “organik” sertifikalı alanında yürütülmüştür. Ana bitki olarak Yalova Yağlık 28 kapya biber çeşidi, ön bitki olarak da fiğ, kırmızı lahana, marul, bakla, brokkoli, kereviz, karnabahar ve bezelye kullanılmıştır. Organik tarım yönetmeliğine uygun yürütülen çalışmada 9 yıllık süre içerisinde ön bitkilere göre elde edilen biber verim değerleri ile bazı kalite özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Bakterier er noen av de minste og mest tallrike organismene i jorda. I ett gram jord kan det være flere milliarder. Det er anslått at det finnes mer enn 60 000 ulike bakteriearter, hvorav de fleste ikke en gang har fått noe navn. Hver av disse har sine spesielle roller og funksjoner. Flest bakterier finner vi i de øvre 10 cm av jordlaget, i rotsonen, meitemarkganger og andre steder der det finnes organisk materiale.

Phosphorus Management on ‘Extensive' Organic Farms with Infertile Soils Organic Eprints

Two case-study farms with negative P balances maintained acceptable productivity without fertilisers, apparently by ‘mining’ ‘available’ P reserves in surface and subsoil. The question for these organic farms is ‘how long before fertiliser is needed?’ With six farms on lower-fertility, weakly acidic to alkaline soils and modest rainfall (380-580 mm/yr), low productivity was related to P deficiency despite positive P balances from using allowable fertilisers. Useful supplies of compost or manure were unavailable. Biochar as a Soil Amendment: A Review of the Environmental Implications Organic Eprints

The term 'biochar' refers to black carbon formed by the pyrolysis of biomass i.e. by heating biomass in an oxygen-free or low oxygen environment such that it does not (or only partially) combusts. Traditional charcoal is one example of biochar produced from wood. The term 'biochar' is much broader than this however, encompassing black carbon produced from any biomass feedstock. The use of biochar as a soil additive has been proposed as a means to simultaneously mitigate anthropogenic climate change whilst improving agricultural soil fertility.
