AMMONIA TOXICITY AFFECTS CATIONS UPTAKE AND GROWTH IN PAPAYA PLANTS INCLUSIVE WITH SILICON ADDITION Acta biol.Colomb.
SANTOS SILVA,Bruna; MELLO PRADO,Renato de; CALERO HURTADO,Alexander; APARECIDA DE ANDRADE,Renata; PEREIRA DA SILVA,Gilmara.
ABSTRACT High ammonia (NH4 +) concentration can exert stress on many plants, which causes nutritional disorders and reduction on plant growth. However, depending on the intensity of the stress, it may be attenuated by silicon. In this work, the response of impact of cations and silicon accumulations and plant growth in cultivated papaya plants was investigated under different toxic ammonia concentrations regardless of the presence of silicon (Si). The experiment was conducted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) with papaya seedlings, variety 'Grupo Formosa' (Calimosa híbrida 01), grown in a glass greenhouse, in 1.7 dm3 pots filled with pine and coconut fiber-based substrate. The experimental design was a randomized block design, in a 5 x 2...

Considerations regarding the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii under low light availability in a low phosphorus lake Acta Botanica
Tonetta,Denise; Hennemann,Mariana Coutinho; Brentano,Débora Monteiro; Petrucio,Mauricio Mello.
ABSTRACTAlthough many studies have shown that the dispersion, increased abundance and dominance of cyanobacteria can be attributed to nutrient enrichment, we discuss features contributing to the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii in a shallow, polymictic, subtropical coastal lake with low phosphorus and light limitation (Peri Lake). The presence and dominance of C. raciborskii in an environment with such characteristics emphasizes the idea that nutrients alone do not explain the high density of this cyanobacterium. Other features should be considered in explaining this species dominance, such as phosphorus storage and physiological flexibilitywhich seem to be key features to high densities in low phosphorus systems.

Spore germination, early development and some notes on the effects of in vitro culture medium on Frullania ericoides (Nees) Mont. (Frullaniaceae, Marchantiophyta) Acta Botanica
Silva-e-Costa,Juliana da Costa; Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira; Resende,Cristiano Ferrara de; Peixoto,Paulo Henrique Pereira.
ABSTRACT In bryophytes, establishment can occur by a sexual or asexual process, but the production of spores enables colonization of a wider range of habitats and substrates than can asexual propagules. Successful germination is critical for establishment in a new environment. This paper addresses germination and sporeling development in Frullania ericoides, a leafy liverwort species. Fresh spores were inoculated in vitro in different culture strengths of Knop’s nutrient solution (one-fourth strength, half strength, full strength, one and a half strength and double strength), in order to evaluate the effects of this solution on spore germination and on the development of external protonema. On the first assessment, spore germination was observed at all the...

The dynamics of nitrogen (N) in ryegrass intercropped with different forage species with regard to dry matter (DM) accumulation within an agroecological transition system was evaluated. Annual ryegrass was intercropped with black oats (RY + BO), white clover (RY + WC) and forage peanut (RY + FP). The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replications. The study applied the N dilution model for plant tissue which comparatively uses modifiable factors of the environment at optimal levels. The model shows decline in N concentration due to the DM accumulation of temperate grass pastures. Data were compared to model by the root mean square deviation analysis. Dilution coefficient (β), used in all pasture samples, was lower than -0.60....

Moresco, Carina; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Rodrigues, Liliana; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
Periphytic diatoms were sampled from two streams, one located in an urban area and the other located in a rural area, in Maringá, State of Paraná, Brazil. In addition to temporal variability, differences in the assemblage structure between streams were evaluated and correlated with physical and chemical characteristics. Six samples of periphytic diatoms were collected from each stream from July 2007 to June 2008. The streams differed in abiotic factors and in relation to the structure of diatom assemblages and the spatial scale was more important than the temporal scale (ANOVA, p ≥ 0.05; non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS) stress = 13.73, p = 0.009). The Procrustes analysis (m2 = 0.7607 and p = 0.0001) showed that variables with the greatest...

Characterization of Dairy Slurry in Sourthern Chile Farms Agricultura Técnica
Salazar,Francisco; Dumont,Juan Carlos; Chadwick,David; Saldaña,Rodolfo; Santana,Mabel.
In this study 50 slurry samples were collected from commercial dairy farms located in the South of Chile during 1995-1997. Samples were analyzed for dry matter, pH, organic matter, available and total macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium), available and total micro nutrients (zinc, iron, manganese and copper) and total aluminum. Results showed that the dry matter content in dairy effluents was low, with 62% of the samples being < 4% DM. This reflected the large volumes of water that the storage received. A great variation in nutrient content was observed in the analyzed samples, probably reflecting differences in feeding regimes, use of wash water, rainfall and age of slurry at the time of sampling. In general,...

Limnology of the largest multi-use artificial reservoir in NE Brazil: The Castanhão Reservoir, Ceará State Anais da ABC (AABC)
LACERDA,LUIZ D.; SANTOS,JANAÍNA A.; MARINS,ROZANE V.; SILVA,FRANCISCO A.T.F. DA.
Abstract This work reviews the limnology of the largest multi-use reservoir in NE Brazil, the Castanhão Reservoir in Ceará State, during 5 years of an extended drought when the reservoir’s volume decreased from 88% to about 30%. Major physical and chemical parameters of the water column, phytoplankton community, trophic state and sediment geochemistry were monitored, as well as the impact from extensive aquaculture. Water quality of the full reservoir was maintained due to hydrodynamics, which transport nutrients to the hypolimnion of a stratified water column, rendering an oligotrophic state to the reservoir, notwithstanding the large nutrient inputs from aquaculture and irrigated agriculture. However, with the extension of the drought period, the...

The use of rocks to improve family agriculture in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Theodoro,Suzi H.; Leonardos,Othon H..
During the second half of the 20th century, the introduction of new chemical agriculture technologies brought about a revolution in food production, but this has also cause deep deterioration in our relationships with the natural environment. In developing tropical countries, record yields were accompanied by rural exodus, widespread deforestation and loss of topsoil. The stonemeal research described herein is an alternative to such practices as it is an environmental friendly and socially responsible technology based on soil rejuvenation and conservation by means of the addition of natural rock powders that are rich in phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, potassium and micronutrients. The research adopted an inter-disciplinary approach and was conducted among...

Phosphorus dynamics in a highly polluted urban drainage channel-shallow reservoir system in the Brazilian semiarid Anais da ABC (AABC)
ARAÚJO,GERMÁRIO M.; LIMA NETO,IRAN E.; BECKER,HELENA.
Abstract: This paper investigates phosphorus dynamics in a highly polluted system composed of a drainage channel followed by a shallow reservoir in the city of Fortaleza, Brazilian semiarid. During the dry season, significant non-point source loads of total phosphorus originated from residences unconnected to sewers were identified along the channel, resulting in an increasing flow rate of untreated sewage towards the reservoir. During the rainy season, as a consequence of dilution, phosphorus concentrations decreased by about 5-fold. The results also revealed that the reservoir was acting similarly to a waste stabilization pond, with phosphorus removal efficiency of about 33%. Assuming one-dimensional flow for the channel and complete mixing for the...
