The nutritional status of xaraes palisade grass with SPAD chlorophyll meter and the critical nitrogen sufficiency index (cNSI) in the dry and rainy seasons were assessed. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four treatments (50, 100, 200 and 400 kg N ha-1), three replicates and two seasons: dry and rainy. All variables had a high nonlinear relationship with their predictors (p < 0.001). Total nitrogen (TN) reached a plateau at doses 262.0 and 514.8 kg of N ha-1 and the concentration of TN in the plant was 1.88 and 1.93% respectively during the rainy and dry season. Relative chlorophyll content (RCC) reached a plateau at 46.05 and 53.65 SPAD units in the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. The production of dry matter (DM)... |

Abstract The method used to dry plant tissue samples may modify its nutrient content, and results in incorrect diagnostic of crop nutritional status. The hypothesis was that microwave drying method does not affect the nutrient content of leaves neither the interpretation of the results, as compared to oven-drying procedure. In this study we evaluated the effect of microwave drying of eucalyptus (Corymbia Citriodora (Hook.)) and rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) leaves on dry matter and macronutrient content, as compared to oven drying. The study was performed in a laboratory at the Department of Soils and Fertilizers of Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”, UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP-Brazil. The experiments were: one using leaf... |

Abstract Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium do not grow and flower well with 100% ammonium (NH4-N); and there are detailed studies on the effects of nitrate (NO3-N) and ammonium ratios on the flowering, but no information about accumulation of other nutrients and the effects of ammonium toxicity on orchids. For this reason, two experiments were carried out with orchids: Phalaenopsis ‘Golden Peoker’ and Dendrobium ‘Valentine’. Six months after acclimatization the plants were transplanted to individual plastic vessels and the treatments consisted of five ratios (%) of nitrate / ammonium (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, 100/0). The sources of NO3-N and NH4-N were calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, respectively. After 12 months treatment, when the plants were... |

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the recognition memory and the levels of DNA damage (blood and hippocampus) in undernourished young Wistar rats. The experiment was conducted along 14-week with rodents divided in control group (CG, n=8) and undernourished group (UG, n=12) which was submitted to caloric restriction. Nutritional status for undernutrition was defined by Body Mass Index (BMI) ≤0.45g/cm2 and by weighting the organs/tissue (liver, spleen, intestine, peritoneal fat, kidney and encephalon). The Novel Object Recognition Test assessed recognition memory and the Comet Assay evaluated the levels of DNA damage. Student t test, 2-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis were used and the significance level was of p<0.05. The UG showed lower BMI and... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the fertiliser sources and application methods of copper (Cu) in citrus trees during the first years of fruit production. Two experiments were set up in an orchard with 3-year-old sweet orange trees, which were applied with three sources of Cu (nitrate, sulfate or EDTA) either via fertigation (Experiment 1) or via foliar sprays (Experiment 2). Regardless of the fertiliser source, Cu application via fertigation was not efficacious to increase the micronutrient concentration in leaves and, consequently, did not affect fruit yield. Conversely, foliar application of Cu, either as nitrate or sulfate, increased this nutrient level in leaves but when applied as copper nitrate, visual phytotoxicity symptoms were verified in... |

The ideal feeding for premature babies has been the source of extensive debate. The aim of this study was to assess the association between type of feeding at discharge and the nutritional status of very low birth weight infants. This was a retrospective cohort of preterm babies with birth weight ≤1500 g, born between January 2006 and December 2013. The infants were divided into 3 groups according to type of feeding at discharge: exclusive breast milk (group 1), mixed feeding (group 2) and exclusive artificial formula (group 3). Frequencies of each group were calculated, as well as mean Z-score differences in weight, length and head circumference. Six hundred and forty-nine newborns were included. The mean weight of groups 1, 2, and 3 was 1338.7, 1104.0,... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutrient contents in ‘Tommy Atkins’ mango leaves at the flowering and fruiting stages under different strategies to reduce irrigation levels during flower induction. Five irrigation level reduction strategies, based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc) were used in the plots: T1 (0% ETc), T2 (25% ETc), T3 (50% ETc), T4 (75% ETc) and T5 (100% ETc); two production cycles in the split-plots; and in two development stages, flowering and harvest, in the split-split plots. The content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S, as well as B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Na was determined and leaf chlorophyll index was measured during the second cycle. The content of P, K, Mg, and Cu in the ‘Tommy Atkins’ mango trees leaves varied... |

We aimed to establish strategies for nitrogen (N) fertilization on drip-irrigated determinate-growth-habit tomato, under Cerrado conditions of Central Brazil. Three field experiments were carried out in a randomized block design. In experiment I six N doses (0, 80, 160, 240, 320 and 400 kg ha-1 N) were tested, in experiment II six combinations of the N forms (nitric; ammonium; amide; 2/3 nitric + 1/3 ammonium; 2/3 nitric + 1/3 amide; and 1/3 nitric + 2/3 amide) were evaluated, and in experiment III the combination of three soil pre-plant fertilization fractions (0, 20 and 40%) was evaluated with two splitting schemes of the remaining N via fertigation (linear and adjusted N-uptake curve). SPAD chlorophyll index and N content were measured in the leaves of... |
