Non-parametric indexes in selecting hybrids of chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Medeiros,Artur M; Rodrigues,Rosana; Costa,Daniele V; Pimenta,Samy; Oliveira,Jurandi G.
ABSTRACT On Solanaceae, the use of hybrids in seed market has been consolidated in recent decades, especially for sweet pepper and tomato crops. However, other crops such as chili peppers (Capsicum spp.) are still neglected by breeding programs which aim to obtain hybrids. The objectives of this work were to evaluate experimental chili pepper hybrids dedo-de-moça (C. baccatum var. pendulum) in relation to production and quality of fruits in two growing seasons and to compare non-parametric selection indexes based on these aspects. Eight chili pepper genotypes were evaluated, being three experimental hybrids (HP03, HP04 and HP08), three lineages (PIM01, PIM02 and PIM03) and two commercial cultivars as controls (‘BRS Mari’ and ‘Ibirajá’), under field...

The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of heifers fed sugarcane silages produced with and without additives. Thirty-two Holstein heifers were randomly assigned, in a block design, to evaluate rations (46% silage; 54% concentrate; 12% crude protein) containing silages treated with (fresh basis) urea (0.5%), sodium benzoate (0.1%) or Lactobacillus buchneri (3.64x10(5) cfu g-1 ). Inoculation with L. buchneri improved daily gain (1.24 vs. 0.94 kg day-1 ), and the addition of benzoate resulted in better feed conversion (7.6 vs. 9.4 kg of dry matter per kg of live weight), in relation to the untreated silage (control). Treatments did not affect dry matter intake (mean of 2.19% of live weight). Rations containing silages treated with benzoate...

Pedreira,Márcio dos Santos; Oliveira,Simone Gisele de; Primavesi,Odo; Lima,Magda Aparecida de; Frighetto,Rosa Toyoko Shiraishi; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha.
Using sorghum silage, the effect of roughage/concentrate ratios was evaluated on nutrient intake, digestibility, ruminal parameters and methane production by beef cattle. Three treatments (0, 30 and 60% of concentrate in DM of the diet) were distributed in three Latin squares, with nine animals and three periods. Dry matter intake increased as the grain concentration in diet increased; pH showed opposite behavior. Methane emissions were lower for animals fed the diet exclusively with sorghum silage as compared with those fed 30% of concentrate, but was similar to that of animals receiving 60% of concentrate. Losses of ingested gross energy as methane were reduced by 33% when grain concentration was increased in the diet. Concentrations of propionic and...

Corn plant arrangement and its effect on silage quality R. Bras. Zootec.
Skonieski,Fernando Reimann; Nörnberg,José Laerte; Kessler,Julcemar Dias; David,Diego Bitencourt de; Azevedo,Eduardo Bohrer de; Brüning,Gilmar; Pimentel,Concepta Margaret McManus.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of the row spacing between corn plants on silage quality. Different spacing between corn rows (40, 60, and 80 cm) was used, but the population of plants was maintained around 65,000/ha in all treatments. Analysis of variance was carried out and means were compared by Tukey's test at 5% of probability. A reduction in row spacing provided better spatial distribution of plants, but did not alter morphological composition or dry matter production. The corn with most equidistant spatial distribution (lowest row spacing) showed an increase in lignin concentration, neutral detergent fiber, and total carbohydrates, and showed a decrease in total digestible nutrients when compared with 80 cm row spacing....
