Direct and Total Benefits of Irrigation in India and its Implications to Irrigation Financing and Cost Recovery AgEcon

Who benefits from irrigation development in an economy and who should pay for the cost? This question so far has not been well addressed in the irrigation literature. To answer this question we need to know, in addition to the information on farmers' level benefits (increased crop productivity), the magnitude of the total economy wide benefits derived by the farm and non-farm sector in the economy from irrigation development. In this study, taking an example from India, we have estimated the marginal benefits of irrigation, both direct (farm level benefits) and total (rural economy wide). Public investment to reserve Dutch disease: the case of Chad AgEcon

This paper studies the relevance of agricultural policies for avoiding Dutch Disease, which affects many less developed countries experiencing a resource boom. Using a computable general equilibrium model calibrated for Chad, we study the impact of using this country’s annual oil revenue for public investment, particularly in the development of road and irrigation infrastructure. Our model takes into account the integration of markets and migration processes. We find that improving water access would reduce Chad’s dependence on food aid and entail a substantial improvement in rural household welfare.
