ABSTRACT Synopia ultramarina Dana, 1853 is considered a circumtropical species and was originally described based on material collected from two localities near halfway between the southwestern Africa and northeastern Brazil. The species is redescribed here with samples from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil. The material examined was collected by SCUBA diving, from rhodolith beds, in Ressureta Channel, between Meio and Rata Islands. Proposal of a trophic relationship between Chaetognatha and Cnidaria based on Mitochondrial COI sequences ArchiMer

This is the first study in Brazil to propose a trophic relationship between Chaetognatha and Cnidaria based on molecular data (COI gene - DNA barcode). Cnidaria COI sequences were detected in tissue samples from two specimens of Flaccisagitta enflata collected in the surroundings of Fernando de Noronha archipelago, Tropical Western Atlantic. The methodology used followed all the requirements for a safe molecular manipulation, making the possibility of contamination unlikely. A search carried in BLAST showed that both sequences provided here presented a combination of highest query coverage and match identity with Nemopilema nomurai (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa), supporting the hypothesis that they belong to a species of jellyfish. Geochemical fluxes related to alteration of a subaerially exposed seamount: Nintoku seamount, ODP Leg 197, Site 1205 - art. no. Q02014 ArchiMer

Hole 1205A was drilled on Nintoku Seamount, which lies in the midportion of the Emperor Seamount Chain. This seamount was emergent similar to 56 Myr ago but was submerged by 54 Ma, so the lavas have endured weathering in both subaerial and submarine environments. We have studied the petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of intercalated altered basalts, breccias, and soil samples recovered at Hole 1205A to quantify the chemical exchanges between the seamount and seawater and/ or meteoric fluids. The secondary mineralogy is relatively uniform throughout the section and comprises smectite, Feoxyhydroxides, iddingsite, and Ca-carbonates. Acyrtus pauciradiatus, new species, is described on the basis of three specimens collected at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. It differs from its congeners by having a reduced number of rays in the pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins and is more isolated geographically, than any other species in the genus.

Atol das Rocas: an oasis for Octopus insularis juveniles (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.

The habitat, population density, distribution and diet of Octopus insularis Leite & Haimovici, 2008 were studied in the Atol das Rocas Biological Reserve, based on visual census carried out in fixed quadrants. For each octopus den, we collected data on octopus size, substrate, type of den, and food remains around it. A total of 100 octopus dens were found within the fixed quadrants. The highest density occurred at Mapas area (0.30 inds/100 m²) and the lowest at Crista Algálica (0.07 inds/100 m²). The preferred den type was the one on the reef bed (69%), reinforcing the importance of rocky substrates for this species. A total of 454 food items, classified into 22 distinct taxa, were collected. Two lobster species coexist in the southeast Pacific Juan Fernández archipelago, Jasus frontalis (Milne-Edwards, 1837) and Acantharctus delfini (Bouvier, 1909). Like most lobster species they undergo a prolonged larval period, which is particularly long for J. frontalis (> 16 months). Though typical of Palinurids, this long larval duration is usually not thought to be conducive to local recruitment. While it is known that settlement is confined to the three islands of the archipelago (Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara) and Desventuradas Islands (aprox. 800 km to the north), it remains poorly understood how local larval supply allows such distribution pattern. The first occurrence of the Order Mormonilloida (Copepoda) in the Tropical Southwest Atlantic Ocean Anais da ABC (AABC)

This communication is the first report of the occurrence of the order Mormonilloida (Mormonilla phasma) in the tropical Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Female individuals were found in surface waters from the shelf break state of Rio Grande do Norte (Northeastern Brazil) and between depths of 60 and 100 m in the epipelagic layer around the St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago (equatorial Atlantic). This finding extends the vertical limits for this species.
