Histology of folicular development of hybrids between Triatoma infestans Klug, 1864 and Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) Acta biol.Colomb.
Gastón FIAD,Federico; CAREZZANO,Fernando José; CARDOZO,Miriam; RODRÍGUEZ,Claudia Susana.
ABSTRACT Triatoma infestans and Triatoma platensis are interfertile species that frequently share ecotopes and produce natural fertile hybrids. Interspecific crossing allows the production of more suitable hybrid genotypes capable of colonizing new habitats. Therefore, studies of reproductive aspects in hybrids are of great importance. In this sense, oogenesis, a process that involves the development of the oocyte and allows the formation of viable eggs, is a relevant aspect. In this study, histological aspects focused on the follicular development of experimental hybrids were characterized. To do this, the ovaries of35 hybrid females were removed, paraffin-embedded and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The development of the follicular epithelium and the...

Soares, Marcus Alvaranga; Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri; Batista, Joana Darc; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Zanuncio, José Cola; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Lino Neto, José; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Serrão, José Eduardo; Universidade Federal de Viçosa.
The Asopinae insects are generalist predators, and Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is the most studied species of this group in Brazil. The objective was to study ovarian development, egg production and oviposition of mated and virgin P. nigrispinus females. Five 24-hours-old females were dissected and the ovaries were analyzed. Fifteen females of this predator were mated (T1), and another fifteen were individualized without mating (T2). The ovaries of five females per treatment were dissected and mature and immature eggs were counted. Five virgin females of P. nigrispinus at twenty days old were also analyzed. Twenty-four-hours-old P. nigrispinus females had low ovary development without the evidence of oocyte production. The...

Histological characterization of oocyte developmental stages of suruvi Steindachneridion scriptum kept in captivity Animal Sciences
Abreu, Mariana Roza; Garcia, Patrícia; Zaniboni-Filho, Evoy.
Stages of oocyte development were described for suruvi females (Steindachneridion scriptum) kept in captivity. Oocytes of 21 mature or maturing females and ovaries of 12 immature females were fixed in Karnovsky solution for 4 and 12 hours, respectively. After, they were processed for routine histology, embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Slides were examined under a light microscope and the oocytes were measured using the LAS EZ software, using the average between the largest and the smallest diameter of each oocyte for representation. There were six types of oocytes: Chromatin nucleolus: found in immature females, with average diameter of 9.5 ± 4.46 μm; Perinucleolar: present in all developmental stages with average diameter of 67.6 ±...

Ovarian histology and fecundity in the evaluation of the reproduction of the invasive species Serrasalmus marginatus (Characidae) on a neotropical floodplain Biological Sciences
Melo, Gabriele Sauthier Romano de; Santana, Herick Soares de; Tos, Claudenice Dei.
The construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1982 led to the formation of a reservoir, which, in turn, leveled the waters of the Paraná River by flooding the geographic barrier Salto de Sete Quedas. This allowed the piranha Serrasalmus marginatus to invade and colonize the upper Paraná River. This study aimed to: i) confirm, through light microscopy, the reproductive phases of S. marginatus females; ii) estimate fecundity and iii) evaluate the reproduction areas of the population. A total of 764 females were collected from nine sampling sites on the upper Paraná River floodplain. Microscopic analysis of the ovaries showed the following phases: early developing subphase, developing phase, spawning capable phase, actively spawning subphase,...

Oogenesis and egg development in triatomines: a biochemical approach Anais da ABC (AABC)
Atella,Georgia C.; Gondim,Katia C.; Machado,Ednildo A.; Medeiros,Marcelo N.; Silva-Neto,Mário A.C.; Masuda,Hatisaburo.
In triatomines, as well as in other insects, accumulation of yolk is a process in which an extra-ovarian tissue, the fat body, produces yolk proteins that are packed in the egg. The main protein, synthesized by the fat body, which is accumulated inside the oocyte, is vitellogenin. This process is also known as vitellogenesis. There are growing evidences in triatomines that besides fat body the ovary also produces yolk proteins. The way these yolk proteins enter the oocyte will be discussed. Yolk is a complex material composed of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and other minor components which are packed inside the oocyte in an organized manner. Fertilization triggers embryogenesis, a process where an embryo will develop. During embryogenesis the yolk will...

Oogenesis in the swamp eel Synbranchus marmoratus (Bloch, 1795) (Teleostei; synbranchidae). Ovarian anatomy, stages of oocyte development and micropyle structure Biocell
Ravaglia,Mario Aldo; Maggese,María Cristina.
Synbranchus marmoratus (Synbranchidae), commonly known as the swamp eel, is a protogynous diandric teleost fish widely distributed throughout South America. The purpose of this work was to study the ovarian anatomy and to describe oocyte developmental stages in the swamp eel, Synbranchus marmoratus. S. marmoratus has a unique sacular ovary. It is covered by a conspicuous muscular wall, probably involved in an egg-releasing system acting as a peristaltic-like mechanism. The internal ovarian anatomy shows a U-shaped ovarian lamella delimiting a dorsal ovarian lumen. The microscopic study shows evidence of the existence of a germinal epithelium in the inner surface of the lamella, which contains germinal cells, pre-follicular cells and epithelial cells. The...

Gametogenesis and nucleotypic effects in the tetraploid red vizcacha rat, Tympanoctomys barrerae (Rodentia, Octodontidae) Biol. Res.
GALLARDO,MILTON H; GARRIDO,ORLANDO; BAHAMONDE,RAÚL; GONZÁLEZ,MARCELO.
Nucleotypic effects link DNA content with nuclear size and cell dimensions of reproductive cells in polyploid organisms. We studied the gametogenesis of the allotetraploid rodent Tympanoctomys barrerae, aiming to determine these effects in reproductive cells. The species' cofamily members, Octodon degus and Spalacopus cyanus were used as control. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis in T. barrerae follows the pattern of differentiation and sequence of events of the control species, but varied nucleotypic effects were observed. Exceedingly large, spatulated spermatozoa with a submedially attached flagellum are characteristic of male T. barrerae. The diameter of the nuclei of primordial and growing follicles as well as those of the Graaff follicles, of the...

Ultrastructure of ovarian follicular epithelium of the Amazonian fish Pseudotylosurus microps (Teleostei: Belonidae): morphological and histochemical characterization of the intercellular deposits BJB
CRUZ-LANDIM,C.; CRUZ-HÖFLING,M. A..
The present paper reports the presence of great quantities of electrondense intercellular material in the follicular epithelium of P. microps. The material apparently is uptaken from circulation and enter the follicle through the intercellular spaces accumulating in the epithelial median-apical intercellular spaces and in perioocytic space. The accumulation starts in the early growth of the primary oocyte and proceed until vitellogenesis. The possible chemical nature and function of the deposits are discussed.

Purification, partial characterization and role in lipid transport to developing oocytes of a novel lipophorin from the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus BJMBR
Ximenes,A.A; Oliveira,G.A; Bittencourt-Cunha,P; Tomokyo,M; Leite,D.B; Folly,E; Golodne,D.M; Atella,G.C.
Lipid transport in arthropods is achieved by highly specialized lipoproteins, which resemble those described in vertebrate blood. Here we describe purification and characterization of the lipid-apolipoprotein complex, lipophorin (Lp), from adults and larvae of the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus. We also describe the Lp-mediated lipid transfer to developing oocytes. Lps were isolated from homogenates of C. maculatus larvae and adults by potassio bromide gradient and characterized with respect to physicochemical properties and lipid content. The weevil Lp (465 kDa) and larval Lp (585 kDa), with hydrated densities of 1.22 and 1.14 g/mL, contained 34 and 56% lipids and 9 and 7% carbohydrates, respectively. In both Lps, mannose was the predominant...

Sequence and expression pattern of the germ line marker vasa in honey bees and stingless bees Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tanaka,Érica Donato; Hartfelder,Klaus.
Queens and workers of social insects differ in the rates of egg laying. Using genomic information we determined the sequence of vasa, a highly conserved gene specific to the germ line of metazoans, for the honey bee and four stingless bees. The vasa sequence of social bees differed from that of other insects in two motifs. By RT-PCR we confirmed the germ line specificity of Amvasa expression in honey bees. In situ hybridization on ovarioles showed that Amvasa is expressed throughout the germarium, except for the transition zone beneath the terminal filament. A diffuse vasa signal was also seen in terminal filaments suggesting the presence of germ line cells. Oocytes showed elevated levels of Amvasa transcripts in the lower germarium and after follicles...

Protein content and electrophoretic profile of fat body and ovary extracts from workers of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Hymenoptera, Meliponini) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Vagner T. Paes de; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
Workers of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Lepeletier, 1836) develop their ovaries and lay eggs, therefore the production of vitellogenin is expected. In electrophoretic profiles only fat body extracts from nurse workers and ovary extracts from newly-emerged workers show protein with molecular mass similar to vitellogenin. However, an increase in the protein content was detected in forager fat body. This increase was attributed to storage of vitellogenin or other proteins in the previous phase and not discharged into the hemolymph or to an effect of the increased titre of juvenile hormone in this phase of worker life over the fat body functioning.

The caridean shrimp Alvinocaris niuricola has been observed forming high density populations over mussel beds on the giant pockmark cold seep site Regab in the Gulf of Guinea at 3150 m depth. Samples were collected using the ROV Victor 6000, a beam trawl and a TV grab from two sites. The specimens Were sexed and measured for population structure analysis. In one sample the sex ratio was 1:1, but the other sample had a sex ratio significantly biased towards females. The maximum size of females is larger than males. A sub-sample was used for gametogenesis and fecundity analysis. The oogenesis and spermatogenesis of A. muricola is characteristic of caridean shrimps. The oogonia proliferate from the germinal epithelium and develop into previtellogenic oocytes...

Isolement et caracterisation d'une proteine membranaire ovocytaire capable de fixer specifiquement la vitellogenine ArchiMer
Jugan, P; Vanherp, F.
After solubilization of ovocyte-membranes from the crayfish Orconectes limosus , a component with a molecular weight of 30 kDa and capable to fix vitellogenin specifically, could be characterized by SDS-PAGE and by electroblotting. Because this isolated component is sensible to the digestion of proteolytic enzymes such as pronase, it is assumed that it is a protein. A polyclonal antiserum is produced against this component and its tissue-specificity is verified by ELISA.

Artificial insemination mastery in red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, requires a first experimental step wOOng at getting basic biological data. Regarding males, a relation between optical density of the solution (OD) measured by spectrophotometry and sperm concentration (SC) has been established : OD O,161*SC + 0,119. Mean sperm concentration measured is 4,36.10 10 spz.mL-1. This study shows an influence of the solution of dilution on spermatozoa motility and its evolution during short term preservation. As far as females are concemed, the follow-up of final maturation through the observation of samples taken during reguIar strippings, seems to he a good technique to limit overripening and spontaneous liheration of ovules. Etude preliminaire des equilibres de distribution de l'eau et des ions au cours de l'ovogenese de Solea solea ArchiMer
Gallis, J; Lemenn, F; Lebrun, A; Nunez, R.
During oogenesis of Solea solea L., gonadal changes in water, Na super(+) and K super(+) ions seem to be related to yolk protein incorporation by the oocyte. The decrease in oocyte water accumulation, associated with an increase in pericellular water accumluation and a decrease in K super(+) concentration occurs when vitellogenin enters the oocyte. Na super(+) concentration decreases in the oocyte at the end of the exogenous vitellogenesis when the first stages of the oocyte maturation take place. Water accumulation in the pericellular space during vitellogenesis allows the rapid transfer of water from this compartment into the oocyte during the terminal phase of maturation. However the total amount of gonadal water remains stable.

During the reproductive period, the microscopical observation of Patella coerulea ovary shows some ovogonies forming neets, supported by a conjonctive network, previtellogenic oocytes which leave gradually the conjonctive tissue and vitellogenic oocytes isolated in the acinus lumen. In early stages of previtellogenesis, an important nucleolar activity, caracterised by cloud-shaped or nematosomes and ribonucleoproteinic extrusions in cytoplasm compartment can be observed. At the end of this stage, the oocyte becomes richer in organites, mitochondria, granular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi. We further notice the outcome of the first vitellin platelets. Production of vitellus is higher as three kinds of vitellus are observed in the following order: dark...
