Widening the application of AATSR SST data to operational tasks through the Medspiration Service ArchiMer
Robinson, Ian; Piolle, Jean-francois; Leborgne, Pierre; Poulter, David; Donlon, Craig; Arino, Olivier.
For over a decade the ATSR series of sensors produced high quality SST data products, but the narrow swath did not encourage their use for operational tasks. This changed in 2005 when the European Space Agency's Medspiration Service introduced AATSR data in the GHRSST L2P format. This paper describes the opportunities provided by the Medspiration system for facilitating the complementary use of SST products from AATSR and from other satellite sensors. It explains how, following the implementation by Medspiration of GHRSST procedures, data products and tools, AATSR data are now being used around the world to complement the use of other sources of SST and to facilitate bias adjustments between them. Despite the limited daily coverage of AATSR its broadly...

Using SeaDataNet Management System to preserve the XBT Data-Set of the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Pecci, Leda; Ciuffardi, Tiziana; Reseghetti, Franco; Fichaut, Michele; Picco, Paola; Schaap, Dick.
significant amount of Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) data has been collected in the Mediterranean Sea since 1999 in the framework of operational oceanography activities. The management and storage of such a volume of data poses significant challenges and opportunities. The SeaDataNet project, a pan-European infrastructure for marine data diffusion, provides a convenient way to avoid dispersion of these temperature vertical profiles and to facilitate access to a wider public. The XBT data flow, along with the recent improvements in the quality check procedures and the consistence of the available historical data set are described. The main features of SeaDataNet services and the advantage of using this system for long-term data archiving are presented....

Coriolis, a French project for operational oceanography ArchiMer
Pouliquen, Sylvie; Carval, Thierry; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Gourmelen, Loic; Gouriou, Yves.
The seven French agencies concerned by ocean research are developing together a strong capability in operational oceanography based on a triad including satellite altimetry (JASON), numerical modelling with assimilation (MERCATOR), and in-situ data (CORIOLIS). The CORIOLIS project aims to build a pre-operational structure to collect, validate and distribute ocean data (temperature/salinity profiles and currents) to the scientific community and modellers. The four goals of CORIOLIS are: • To build up a data management centre, part of the ARGO network for the GODAE experiment, able to provide quality-controlled data in real time and delay modes; • To contribute to ARGO floats deployment mainly in the Atlantic with about 300 floats during the 2001-2005...
