Determinants of purchasing behaviour for organic and integrated fruits and vegetables in Slovenia AgEcon

A country-vide survey related to purchasing behaviour of organic and integrated fruit and vegetables has been prepared for Slovenia. An ordered probit model of consumer choice was developed on the basis of survey results to quantify various determinants of purchase frequency for organically and integrally produced fruit and vegetables. Results show that purchase of analysed produce is most significantly influenced by their availability in retail outlets, followed by consumers’ income, health and environmental considerations, and visual attractiveness of products. Demand for organically and integrally produced fruit and vegetables could be further stimulated by targeted knowledge and awareness raising actions.

Livestock farmers’ attitude towards manure separation technology as future strategy AgEcon

In this paper, an ordered probit model is used to assess the factors that affect the probability of livestock farmers having plans to adopt manure separation technology in the future. A survey, based on a postal and computerized questionnaire of representative dairy and pig farms in the Netherlands was carried out in 2009. The results show that age of farmer and a variable which accounts for the interaction between size and location of the farm are important variables explaining the probability of farmers having plans to adopt manure separation technology. Factors Affecting the Adoption of Soil Conservation Measures: A Case Study of Fijian Cane Farmers AgEcon

This study explored the extent to which various factors affect Fijian cane farmers’ adoption of soil conservation measures. The significant factors affecting perception of the soil erosion problem include age, education, ethnicity, and extension services. On the other hand, the significant factors affecting soil conservation effort include perception of the erosion problem, net farm income, farm size, land type, and extension services. In general, personal characteristics appear to affect perceptions of soil erosion while the extent of conservation effort is affected by economic and physical factors. The resulting implications for soil conservation policy are discussed.

Are Urban Consumers in China Ready to Accept Biotech Foods? AgEcon

Based on a large-scale survey conducted in 11 large and small eastern cities in 2002, this study employs ordered probit models to estimate the effects of demographic and socio-economic variables on the likelihood of biotech food acceptance in China. This study also employs a dichotomous choice model to estimate consumers' mean willingness to pay (WTP) for biotech foods, including soybean oil and insect-resistant biotech rice. This survey reaffirms that Chinese urban consumers had a low awareness of biotechnology. Despite the low level of awareness, a great majority of respondents had favorable or neutral attitudes toward biotech foods. Only 5-15 percent was strongly or relatively opposed to biotech foods. A QUALITATIVE CHOICE ANALYSIS OF FACTORS INFLUENCING POST-CRP LAND USE DECISIONS AgEcon

The future use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) lands is an important agricultural policy issue. To examine the effects of factors that influence landowners' post-contract use of CRP lands, a survey of Texas High Plains CRP contract holders was conducted in 1992. This study analyzes the results of the survey using a qualitative choice model. It was found that the presence of a livestock enterprise in the current contract holder's operation increases the probability of these acres remaining in the established cover. Contract holders who value the commodity base have an increased probability of returning their acres to crop production.

Improving Extension Effectiveness for Organic Clients: Current Status and Future Directions AgEcon

Responses from a national survey of U.S. organic farmers indicated dissatisfaction with the extension service. An ordered probit model was used to identify the factors influencing effectiveness ratings of extension advisors by farmers. Study findings show that part-time, higher income organic farmers who used a variety of highly rated private-sector information sources rated extension providers as more effective. Farmers in the Northeast and West regions rated extension usefulness more highly than in other regions. An Improved Method for Calibrating Purchase Intentions in Stated Preference Demand Models AgEcon

The Orbit demand model allows the magnitude of the calibration to stated purchase intentions to vary based on the magnitude of the stated quantities. Using an empirical example of stated trips, we find that the extent of calibration varies substantially with less correction needed at small stated trips (–25%) but larger corrections at higher quantities of stated visits (–48%). We extend the Orbit model to calculate consumer surplus per stated trip of $26. Combining the calibrations in stated trips and value per trip, the Orbit model provides estimates of annual benefits from 60% to 111% less than the count data model.

The Impact of Market Advisory Service Recommendations on Producers' Marketing Decisions AgEcon

A conceptual framework is developed which provides insight into the factors affecting the impact of market advisory service (MAS) recommendations on producer pricing decisions. Data from a survey of 656 U.S. producers reveal that the perceived performance of the MAS, the way in which MAS recommendations are delivered, as well as the match between MAS and producers' marketing philosophy, are important factors explaining the impact of MAS recommendations. Risk attitude does not affect the impact of MAS recommendations on producers' decisions, suggesting producers are more interested in the price-enhancing characteristics of MAS advice than in its risk-reducing features. FREEZE RISK AND ADOPTION OF TECHNOLOGY BY ORANGE PRODUCERS AgEcon

Orange producers in many regions of the U.S. are affected by the recurrence of frost. This study evaluated 147 California farmers' perceptions of frost risk relative to other business risks. Freeze risk perception was negatively related, for example, to farm size. Large farmers with diversified businesses had lower perceptions of freeze risk than small farmers. Change in crop location and the adoption of anti-frost technology were two important responses to freeze risk. California farmers shifted their location to frost-prone areas and adopted anti-frost technology.
