Organic carbon and oil hydrocarbons in bottom sediments of Sevastopol Bay (the Black Sea) IBSS Repository
Osadchaya, T. S.; Ovsyaniy, E. I.; Romanov, A. S.; Ignatieva, O. G..
The paper summarizes data available from the literature and recently obtained about interannual variations of the content of organic carbon, chloroform bitumenoids and oil hydrocarbons found in bottom sediments of Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea). For the recent years the bottom sediment has been receiving a rich inflow of organic matter. Localities where organic carbon content is especially high appeared owing to special sedimentation conditions and unevenly distributed anthropogenic load on the bay's water area. As the result, such sediments have reductive properties which foster accumulation of bitumenoids and oil hydrocarbons.

Сезонная изменчивость отношения органического углерода к хлорофиллу «а» и факторы, ее определяющие в фитопланктоне прибрежных вод Черного моря IBSS Repository
Стельмах, Л. В.; Бабич, И. И..

Microflores sulfatoreductrices en milieu subantarctique. Relations avec quelques parametres physicochimiques et biologiques. (Microflores totales et heterotrophes) ArchiMer
Delille, D; Bouvy, M.
The archipelago of Kerguelen with its complex fjord distribution is particularly interesting for the study of anoxic systems. Between 1968 and 1972, several stations were investigated fortnightly. One of these was further sampled weekly throughout 1982. Each sample series of sediment included the superficial aerobic and subsuperficial anaerobic levels. Each level was examined for direct epifluorescent counts, heterotrophic and sulfate-reducing bacterial numbers by M.P.N. methods, organic carbon and sulfide measurements. Sulfate-reducing bacteria seemed less related to total biomass than the heterotrophic microflora, the latter being dependent on organic supplies. The hydrogen sulfide production was directly related to the presence of sulfate reducers;...

Seasonal variations of downward particle fluxes in front of a reef pass (Moorea Island, French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Schrimm, M; Heussner, S; Buscail, R.
Downward particle fluxes off the Taotoi Pass, a typical Polynesian lagoon pass, have been measured over an annual cycle by means of an array of three mooring lines deployed at 40 m depth on the external sandy plain seawards of the Tiahura reef. Each line was equipped with two hand-operated sediment traps located 1.5 and 10 m above the bottom. During the 1-year survey, the traps were deployed for seven periods of 2-3 weeks. One line equipped with an automated trap was further deployed at 400 m depth on the deep fore-reef slope to collect deep settling particles over two consecutive 6-month periods. For all periods investigated, fluxes on the external plain were highest in front of the pass, and decreased by half on either side (up- and downstream with...

Evaluation of the heterotrophic activity in waters by microanalytical methods. ArchiMer
Bertoni, R.
The radiochemical methods proposed for evaluating heterotrophic activity in waters have been severely criticized in recent years because they are not considered to be sufficiently realistic. Thus, the possibility of directly measuring the heterotrophic consumption of naturally occurring Organic Carbon (OC) in fresh water samples incubated under controlled conditions has been evaluated. The analytical performances of two OC analyzers utilizable for this purpose are discussed here, and some examples of the results obtained by the direct measurement of OC consumption are presented. The consumption rates thus measured ranged from 11.6 to 50.2 mu gC/ 1.h. Although the technique discussed here is less sensitive than radiochemical methods, the few assumptions...

Mineralizing Filamentous Bacteria from the Prony Bay Hydrothermal Field Give New Insights into the Functioning of Serpentinization-Based Subseafloor Ecosystems ArchiMer
Pisapia, Celine; Gerard, Emmanuelle; Gerard, Martine; Lecourt, Lena; Lang, Susan Q.; Pelletier, Bernard; Payri, Claude E.; Monnin, Christophe; Guentas, Linda; Postec, Anne; Quemeneur, Marianne; Erauso, Gael; Menez, Benedicte.
Despite their potential importance as analogs of primitive microbial metabolisms, the knowledge of the structure and functioning of the deep ecosystems associated with serpentinizing environments is hampered by the lack of accessibility to relevant systems. These hyperalkaline environments are depleted in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), making the carbon sources and assimilation pathways in the associated ecosystems highly enigmatic. The Prony Bay Hydrothermal Field (PHF) is an active serpentinization site where, similar to Lost City (Mid-Atlantic Ridge), high-pH fluids rich in H-2 and CH4 are discharged from carbonate chimneys at the seafloor, but in a shallower lagoonal environment. This study aimed to characterize the subsurface microbial ecology of...

Seasonal variability of the advective transport of particulate matter and organic carbon in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Lapouyade, Agnes; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier.
Nine hydrographic cruises were performed on the Gulf of Lion continental margin between June 1993 and July 1996. These observations are analysed to quantify the fluxes of particulate matter and organic carbon transported along the slope by the Northern Current and to characterise their seasonal variability. Concentration of particulate matter and organic carbon are derived from light-transmission data and water sample analyses. The circulation is estimated from the geostrophic current field. The uncertainty on the transport estimate, related to the error on the prediction of particle concentrations from light-transmission data and the error on velocities, is assessed. The particulate matter inflow entering the Gulf of Lion off Marseille is comparable to...

Organic matter in sediments in the mangrove areas and adjacent continental margins of Brazil .1. Amino acids and hexosamines ArchiMer
Jennerjahn, Tc; Ittekkot, V.
The nature of sedimentary organic matter from mangroves and the continental margin of eastern Brazil (8 degrees-24 degrees S) has been investigated in order to obtain information on sources and diagenetic processes. The organic matter content of mangrove sediments is three to four times higher than the maximum content of continental margin sediments. Downslope distribution of organic carbon, nitrogen, amino acids and hexosamines shows an enrichment in water depths between 800 m and 1000 m. The distribution of individual amino acids and hexosamines is highly variable in sedimentary organic matter from mangroves and the continental margin, and the observed compositional differences are mainly due to diagenetic alteration. Organic matter is highly reactive in...

Latitudinal patterns of export production recorded in surface sediments of the Chilean Patagonian fjords (41-55 degrees S) as a response to water column productivity ArchiMer
Aracena, Claudia; Lange, Carina B.; Iriarte, Jose Luis; Rebolledo, Lorena; Pantoja, Silvio.
The Chilean Patagonian fjords region (41-56 degrees S) is characterized by highly complex geomorphology and hydrographic conditions, and strong seasonal and latitudinal patterns in precipitation, freshwater discharge, glacier coverage, and light regime; all of these directly affect biological production in the water column. In this study, we compiled published and new information on water column properties (primary production, nutrients) and surface sediment characteristics (biogenic opal, organic carbon, molar C/N, bulk sedimentary delta(13)C(org)) from the Chilean Patagonian fjords between 41 degrees S and 55 degrees S, describing herein the latitudinal pattern of water column productivity and its imprint in the underlying sediments. An iron budget during the natural iron fertilisation experiment KEOPS (Kerguelen Islands, Southern Ocean) ArchiMer
Chever, F.; Sarthou, G.; Bucciarelli, E.; Blain, S.; Bowie, A. R..
Total dissolvable iron (TDFe) was measured in the water column above and in the surrounding of the Kerguelen Plateau (Indian sector of the Southern Ocean) during the KErguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study (KEOPS) cruise. TDFe concentrations ranged from 0.90 to 65.6 nmol L-1 above the plateau and from 0.34 to 2.23 nmol L-1 offshore of the plateau. Station C1 located south of the plateau, near Heard Island, exhibited very high values (329-770 nmol L-1). Apparent particulate iron (Fe-app), calculated as the difference between the TDFe and the dissolved iron measured on board (DFe) represented 95 +/- 5% of the TDFe above the plateau, suggesting that particles and refractory colloids largely dominated the iron pool. This paper presents a budget of DFe and...

Biotracers and geotracers of depositional events in NW Mediterranean margin over the past two centuries ArchiMer
Giresse, P; Buscail, R; Charriere, B; Abassi, A; Masque, P; Sanchez-cabeza, Ja.
A detailed sedimentological and geochemical investigation was performed on slope sediments collected from the Gulf of Lions and Catalonian margins and from the northern Balearic margin. The study was based on cores, about 50 cm long. Various physiographic sites (canyons, open slopes) were selected according to the available sediment accumulation rates obtained with the Pb-210 geochronological method. At a short time scale, various parts of the slope were characterized by muddy hemipelagic sediment. Sedimentological data suggested that deposition was continuous. Total organic carbon and its hydrolysable fraction decreased downcore. Significant increase of C/N ratio downcore resulted from an early diagenetic process in response to the burial effect. However...

Routing of terrestrial organic matter from the Congo River to the ultimate sink in the abyss: a mass balance approach (André Dumont medallist lecture 2017) ArchiMer
Baudin, François; Rabouille, Christophe; Dennielou, Bernard.
We address the role of the Congo River sediment dispersal in exporting and trapping organic carbon into deep offshore sediments. Of particular interest is the Congo submarine canyon, which constitutes a permanent link between the terrestrial sediment sources and the marine sink. The Congo River delivers an annual sediment load of ~40 Tg (including 2 Tg of C) that feed a mud-rich turbidite system. Previous estimates of carbon storage capacity in the Congo turbidite system suggest that the terminal lobe complex accounts for ~12% of the surface area of the active turbidite system and accumulates ~18% of the annual input of terrestrial particulate organic carbon exiting the Congo River. In this paper, we extend the approach to the whole active turbidite...

Effect of Organic Matter on the Behavior and Control Effectiveness of Herbicides in Soil Planta Daninha
TAKESHITA,V.; MENDES,K.F.; ALONSO,F.G.; TORNISIELO,V.L..
ABSTRACT: With extensive use of herbicides in agricultural areas, the risk of contamination of groundwater and surface water by these products has become a worldwide concern. Practices of application or maintenance of soil organic residues that have begun to be used in agriculture for soil nutrition have demonstrated other benefits besides nutrient supplementation, such as reduced mobility and increased soil degradation of herbicides. Because it is the final destination of herbicides, soil and its constituents, especially organic matter in tropical soils, play a prominent role in processes that encompass the dynamics of herbicide molecules. In this context, it is necessary to know the influence of the organic matter and its constituents on the behavior of...

ORGANIC MATTER FRACTIONS IN A QUARTZIPSAMMENT UNDER CULTIVATION OF IRRIGATED MANGO IN THE LOWER SÃO FRANCISCO VALLEY REGION, BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cardoso,José Alberto Ferreira; Lima,Augusto Miguel Nascimento; Cunha,Tony Jarbas Ferreira; Rodrigues,Marcos Sales; Hernani,Luis Carlos; Amaral,Andre Julio do; Oliveira Neto,Manoel Batista de.
Improper land use has lead to deterioration and depletion of natural resources, as well as a significant decline in agricultural production, due to decreased soil quality. Removal of native vegetation to make way for agricultural crops, often managed inadequately, results in soil disruption, decreased nutrient availability, and decomposition of soil organic matter, making sustainable agricultural production unviable. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of growing irrigated mango (over a 20 year period) on the organic carbon (OC) stocks and on the fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) in relation to the native caatinga (xeric shrubland) vegetation in the Lower São Francisco Valley region, Brazil.
