Observing the observers: uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Ecology and Society
Noe, Egon; Aarhus University; Egon.Noe@agrsci.dk.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of our research was to determine the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explored how values were embedded in five research perspectives: (1) food science, (2) discourse analysis, (3) phenomenology, (4) neoclassical welfare economics, and (5) actor-network theory. Value has various meanings according to different scientific perspectives. A strategy for including and balancing different forms of knowledge in overall...

Can multicriteria assessment tools help build trust into organic products? Ecology and Society
Freyer, Bernhard; University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU); bernhard.freyer@boku.ac.at; Bingen, Jim; Michigan State University, USA; bingen@msu.edu; Paxton, Rebecca; University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU); Rebecca.Paxton@boku.ac.at.
In a continuously expanding, globalizing, and industrializing organic market, organic consumers confront increasing complexity in organic product representation, labeling, and information that challenges how they build trust in organic products. We present a conceptual framework to analyze how consumers might build and practice trust in the organic agrifood chain. We asked specifically about the role of multicriteria assessment tools (MCATs) for trust building. We identified three consumer trust types: uninformed trust in labels (type 1); informed trust in extensive information, control, and certification (type 2); and informed and engaged trust in forms of close farmer–consumer relationships (type 3). Three concepts of...

Soil solarization for weed control in carrot PAB
MARENCO,RICARDO ANTONIO; LUSTOSA,DENISE CASTRO.
Soil solarization is a technique used for weed and plant disease control in regions with high levels of solar radiation. The effect of solarization (0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks) upon weed populations, carrot (Daucus carota L. cv. Brasília) yield and nematode infestation in carrot roots was studied in São Luís (2º35' S; 44º10' W), MA, Brazil, using transparent polyethylene films (100 and 150 mm of thickness). The maximum temperature at 5 cm of depth was about 10ºC warmer in solarized soil than in control plots. In the study 20 weed types were recorded. Solarization reduced weed biomass and density in about 50% of weed species, including Cyperus spp., Chamaecrista nictans var. paraguariensis (Chod & Hassl.) Irwin & Barneby, Marsypianthes chamaedrys...

Population density and weed infestation in organic no-tillage corn cropping system under different soil covers Planta Daninha
Favarato,L.F.; Galvão,J.C.C.; Souza,J.L.; Guarçoni,R.C.; Souza,C.M.; Cunha,D.N..
Currently, one of the biggest challenges faced by organic no-tillage farming is weed control. Thus, the use of cropping practices that help in the control of weeds is extremely important. The objective of this study was to evaluate population density and level of weed infestation in an organic no-tillage corn cropping system under different soil covers. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with six repetitions and five treatments, consisting of three soil covers in an organic no-tillage system, and an organic and a conventional system, both without soil cover. The treatments with soil cover used a grass species represented by the black oat, a leguminous species represented by the white lupine, and intercropping between both species....

Az ökológiai gazdálkodás hatékonysági kérdései AgEcon
Alvincz, Jozsef; Koltai, Judit Petra.
Mindez...

Organic Farming Policies and the Growth of the Organic Sector in Denmark and the UK: A Comparative Analysis AgEcon
Daugbjerg, Carsten; Tranter, Richard B.; Holloway, Garth J..
There has been little systematic analysis of the extent to which organic farming policies have influenced growth in the organic sector. Analyses of organic farming policy instruments, for the most part, provide extensive and detailed reviews of instruments applied either in a single country or across countries. Hence, there is a great need to examine systematically whether there is a relationship between the introduction of organic farming policies and the growth of the organic food sector, and whether particular designs of organic farming policies are more effective than others. In this paper, we take the first step in the endeavour of analysing the effects of organic farming by undertaking an econometric analysis of the relationship between organic...

The contribution of innovations in total factor productivity of organic olive enterprises AgEcon
Karafillis, C.C.; Papanagiotou, Evangelos.
This paper measures the contribution of innovations in total factor productivity(TFP) of organic olive farmers. By constructing an innovation variable instead of the use of a time trend, technical change is replaced by technical difference and TFP growth becomes TFP difference. Primary cross section data on organic olive enterprises from a Greek region is used in the application of the restricted frontier profit function. Farmers are classified into groups according to their innovative ‘profile’. TFP difference among consecutive innovation groups is decomposed into technical difference and adjustment in innovativeness effects. Furthermore, efficiency differences among innovation groups are estimated. Results indicate that more innovative farmers perform...

Improving Extension Effectiveness for Organic Clients: Current Status and Future Directions AgEcon
Lohr, Luanne; Park, Timothy A..
Responses from a national survey of U.S. organic farmers indicated dissatisfaction with the extension service. An ordered probit model was used to identify the factors influencing effectiveness ratings of extension advisors by farmers. Study findings show that part-time, higher income organic farmers who used a variety of highly rated private-sector information sources rated extension providers as more effective. Farmers in the Northeast and West regions rated extension usefulness more highly than in other regions. Not accounting for these demographic components in effectiveness ratings may result in under- or overestimation of results of organic-targeted extension programs. Extension agents can improve their usefulness to organic farmers by complementing...

A MAGYAR ÖKOTERMELÉS ÁTTEKINTÉSE AgEcon
Gyarmati, Gabor.
Egyes rossz adottságú gazdaságok földjeiket átállítják ökológiai státuszra, a támogatás végett. A műve-lési ágak között nagyobb a gyep (rét, legelő, 53,6%) és alacsonyabb a szántó (26,4%) aránya. A gyepterületek könnyen átminősíthetők ökológiai területté, vi-szont gazdasági értékük nem jelentős. A vetésszerkezetben a...

Evaluating Different Growth Scenarios for Organic Farming Using Bayesian Techniques AgEcon
Gardebroek, Cornelis.
Different views exist on the future development of organic agriculture. The Dutch government believes that in 2010 10% of the farm land will be used for organic farming. Others have a more radical view: due to increasing emphasis on sustainable production in the end all farming will be organic. Others believe in a more pessimistic scenario in which the recent growth in organic was just a temporary upswing and that the share of organic farmers already reached its maximum. In this paper different potential scenarios for the further growth of organic farming are evaluated using Bayesian techniques. A nonlinear logistic growth model explaining the share of organic farms is estimated using available historical data for Dutch agriculture. Various scenarios imply...

Technical Efficiency of U.S. Organic Farmers: The Complementary Roles of Soil Management Techniques and Farm Experience AgEcon
Lohr, Luanne; Park, Timothy A..
Agricultural policymakers place increasing emphasis on developing efficiency measures for organic producers in order to evaluate regulatory strategies and evolving organic market conditions. We develop technical efficiency measures for U.S. organic farmers using a stochastic production frontier. Farm decisions about acquiring and managing organic soil materials from on-farm and local sources are incorporated into the technical efficiency measure. Productivity differences between newer entrants to organic farming and more experienced producers are estimated in order to isolate the impact of learning and management expertise on farm-level technical efficiency.

What is my optimal technology? A metafrontier approach using Data Envelopment Analysis for the choice between conventional and organic farming AgEcon
Breustedt, Gunnar; Tiedemann, Torben; Latacz-Lohmann, Uwe.
We analyse the relative competitiveness between organic and conventional farming under different policy scenarios using a DEA-based non-convex metafrontier model. This model allows us to identify a farm’s ex post optimal technology based on input-output observations. Results for Bavarian dairy farms indicate that more than two-thirds of the farms in both technologies – organic and conventional – have chosen their optimal farming system. The remaining farmers could increase their productivity by roughly 5% on average by switching to the other technology. Assuming away the existence of the EU milk quota, reduces the number of sample farms for which organic farming is the optimal technology by more than three fourth. This finding suggests that ceteris paribus...

AgEcon
Kuhnert, Heike.
In 2001 the Federal Government of Germany formed by Social Democrats and Green Party declared a policy goal of 20 % of organic farming in Germany by 2010. This objective can only be achieved by behavioural changes of the actors within the food supply chain and consumers. Therefore, the proper political strategy has to be developed. The article starts with a theoretical overview of the social marketing approach. Then the social marketing approach is applied to the development of strategies and measures for the growth of organic production in Germany. The article concludes with a discussion of the suitability of the social marketing concept.

Padel, Susanne; Michelsen, Johannes.
The paper reviews the development of the organic sector and the institutional conditions in European countries. On the basis of three case studies the interrelationship between organisations of organic and conventional agriculture in the areas of farming community, agricultural policy and food marketing is illustrated. The comparison shows that an open dialog based on mutual respect and a number of initiatives in all three areas appear to be supporting a continuous development of the organic sector.

Lampkin, Nicolas; Padel, Susanne; Foster, Carolyn.
The paper describes the development and policy environment of organic farming in the European Union, where organic farming has grown rapidly due to a variety of factors. Policy measures concerning area-based financial support for conversion to and continuation of organic farming, officially-recognized standards and support for market and regional development, advice and research are considered. This indicates that individual measures can also work against each other. In some countries, good experiences have been made with integrated action plans, an approach that is also being discussed at the European level and which could achieve a good basis for the development of organic farming in future.

Technical Efficiency in Organic Farming: An Application on Italian Cereal Farms Using a Parametric Approach AgEcon
Madau, Fabio A..
A stochastic frontier production model was applied to estimate technical efficiency in a sample of Italian organic and conventional cereal farms. The main purpose was to assess which production technique revealed higher efficiency. Statistical tests on the pool sample model suggested that differences between the two cultivation methods were significant from a technological viewpoint. Separate analyses of two sub-samples (93 and 138 observations for organic and conventional farms, respectively) found that conventional farms were significantly more efficient than organic farms, with respect to their specific technology (0.892 vs. 0.825). This implies that organic (conventional) cereal farmers could increase their income to 99.19 €/ha (40.95 €/ha). Analysis...
