L’émergence du marché de la compensation des zones humides aux États-Unis : impacts sur les modes d’organisation et les caractéristiques des transactions ArchiMer
Scemama, Pierre; Levrel, Harold.
In the United States, the Clean Water Act requires compensatory measures for aquatic ecosystems damaged by development projects. From the 90's to improve the quality of the system, we have seen the emergence of a market system to supervise the transactions related to the implementation of actions for compensation. The theoretical framework of neo-institutional economics states that the choice of the organization of a transaction is based on the minimization of transaction costs. These costs are related to the coordination mechanisms that are specific to each type of organization and which efficiency in terms of transaction costs depends on the characteristics of the transaction: asset specificity, uncertainty and frequency of the transactions. Transactions...

Too Connected to Fail: The Effect of Alliance Network Structure on Farm Survival AgEcon
Kirwan, Barrett E.; Martens, Andrea.
Exogenous, unobserved factors often confound the effects of alliance networks. More capable farmers might be less likely to exit and more likely to have a large number of alliances. In this case the negative correlation between alliance network size and exit likelihood is due to the unobserved confounder--farmer ability--not the effect of network size on exit likelihood. Recognizing the endogeneity of alliance network size when determining a farm’s survival likelihood, we employ an empirical model that accounts for the bias caused by unobserved effects. We account for time-invariant unobserved effects with individual fixed effects. We control for county-level confounding factors with a time-varying county effect. Finally, we address unobserved,...

Collaboration within the UK Farm Industry AgEcon
Alliston, John C.; Newton, David; Gonzalez-Diaz, Francisco.
This paper addresses the effectiveness of the traditional models of cooperation, and analyses best practices in other commercial sectors in order to identify transferable elements. The Report of the Policy Commission on the Future of Farming and Food (2002) identified a need for farmers to cooperate and collaborate more effectively in their business activities in order to be more competitive. The Plunkett Foundation (1992) suggests that in order to play an important role in the maintenance of the rural economy the Farmer Controlled Business should adopt more imaginative approaches. Using an inductive grounded theory approach and guided interview techniques, experts in the field of business collaboration were selected using a purposive sample approach and...

Competing in a Mature Market: The Case of Super AM Food Markets AgEcon
Harling, Kenneth.
The EXPO-AM supermarket entered the Rochester, Massachusetts food market using a retailing format that its parent company had used successfully in England where it went under the store banner “Super EU.” This case describes how the concept was developed and implemented in Rochester over a three year period, 2000-2003. At the time of the case, 2003, Ted Edwards, the general manager of Super AM Food Markets, has been asked to prepare a turnaround plan for the banner after it has shown poor performance.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE PROPOSED NORTH DAKOTA WHEAT POOL; SUMMARY AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Nganje, William E.; Johnson, D. Demcey; Park, Joon J.; Taylor, Richard D..
The ND Durum Wheat Pool may provide additional revenue to durum wheat producers by raising the domestic prices in the North American market with full cooperation from the Canadian Wheat Board. The pool also could provide additional revenue to its members by improving marketing efficiency. On the other hand, the ND Spring Wheat Pool is less likely to provide additional revenue to spring wheat producers by raising domestic prices, mainly because hard red spring and winter wheat are highly substitutable. Efficiency gains also could be smaller than for durum wheat.
