The seasonal diet of Aequidens tetramerus (Cichlidae) in a small forest stream in the Machado River basin, Rondônia, Brazil Acta Amazonica
COSTA,Igor David da; SOARES,Maiza Oliveira.
Trophic relationships in fish communities are affected by the availability of resources, which in turn is affected by spatial and temporal variations throughout the year. The aims of this study were to characterize the diet of A. tetramerus in a streamlet in the north of Brazil and compare its composition in different hydrological seasons (wet and dry seasons). Collections were performed every two months from October 2011 to September 2012 with the aid of seine nets, hand net and fishing traps in the streamlet located in the Machado River drainage basin in the Rondônia state. Most of the specimens collected were quite small (< 40 mm) and had empty stomachs. Our results showed that A. tetramerus feeds on a wide variety of items of plant origin, such as...

Oliveira,Sarah Ragonha de; Souza,Rondon Tatsuta Yamane Baptista de; Nunes,Érica da Silva Santiago; Carvalho,Cristiane Suely Melo de; Menezes,Glauber Cruz de; Marcon,Jaydione Luíz; Roubach,Rodrigo; Ono,Eduardo Akifumi; Affonso,Elizabeth Gusmão.
Poor water quality condition has been pointed out as one of the major causes for the high mortality of ornamental fishes exported from the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The purpose of the current study was to define water quality standards for cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi), by establishing the lower and higher for lethal temperature (LT50), lethal concentration (LC50) for total ammonia and nitrite and LC50 for acid and alkaline pH. According to the findings, cardinal tetra is rather tolerant to high temperature (33.3 ºC), to a wide pH range (acid pH=2.9 and alkaline pH=8.8) and to high total ammonia concentration (23.7 mg/L). However, temperatures below 19.6 ºC and nitrite concentrations above 1.1 mg/L NO2- may compromise fish survival especially...

Feeding ecology of Serrapinnus notomelas (Characiformes: Cheirodontinae) in small forest streams in the Machado River basin, Rondônia, Brazil Acta Amazonica
COSTA,Igor David da; ROCHA,Vanessa Martins da.
ABSTRACT Studies on the trophic structure of fish give information on species autoecology and their role in the ecosystem. The aims of this study were to characterize the diet of Serrapinnus notomelas in small streams of the River Machado basin and to assess the effect of rainfall seasonality. Fish were collected bimonthly from July 2013 to May 2014 with seine nets and hand nets. The length of each specimen was measured to identify category classes. There were also measured the fullness index and volume of each ingested item, and these data were combined to obtain an alimentary index. We used ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis to test for differences between length classes and fullness index, Chi-squared tests to detect seasonal differences in origin of food items...

Metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) parasite of Brochis multiradiatus and Corydoras splendens (Siluriformes: Callichthyidae) from the Peruvian Amazon Biological Sciences
Morey, Germán Augusto Murrieta.
Corydoras splendens (Castelnau, 1855) and Brochis multiradiatus (Orcés V., 1960) are highly demanded for exporters in the Peruvian Amazon and importers all over the world.  The exportation of this fish species may represent a gateway for endoparasites to enter in a new environment with serious effects, so, the present study reports the presence of Tylodelphys sp. infecting C. splendens and B. multiradiatus. Fish were acquired from fishermen of the city of Iquitos, Peru. After the necropsy and analyses of the fish, metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. were found in the liver and intestine. This finding represents the first report of Tylodelphys Diesing, 1850 infecting a fish in the Peruvian Amazon. Considering the possible damages caused by species of...

Differential survivorship of congeneric ornamental fishes under forecasted climate changes are related to anaerobic potential Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gonçalves,Luciana Mara Fé; Silva,Maria de Nazaré Paula da; Val,Adalberto Luis; Almeida-Val,Vera Maria Fonseca de.
Abstract Two Amazonian closely related tetras – cardinal Paracheirodon axelrodi and green neon P. simulans – were artificially acclimatized to environmental chambers mimicking future climate change scenarios (mild, moderate and extreme), using a microcosm facility. P. simulans survived (100%) to all scenarios after 30 days exposure, while P. axelrodi presented decreasing survival percentages according to environmental severity. These differences may be the reflection of distinct natural acclimatization to microhabitats between the species, which differ in thermal conditions. Survival responses might be related to differences in relative gene expression of lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh), suggesting that P. axelrodi anaerobic potential is lower or non-existent...

Reproductive and population parameters of discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904 (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rossoni,Felipe; Amadio,Sidinéia; Ferreira,Efrem; Zuanon,Jansen.
The ornamental discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904, is a popular endemic cichlid species from the Amazon basin, however scientific information concerning biology and ecology in its natural habitat is scarce despite its importance on the international aquarium trade. In this study we evaluated reproductive parameters of S. aequifasciatus in natural habitat in Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Brazilian Amazon. Males are more frequent in the larger size classes and this might be related to the complex breeding behavior known for S. aequifasciatus. Values of L50 for both sexes corresponded to more than 60% of the maximum attained length which may indicate that energy allocation for somatic growth...

Glyphosate commercial formulation effects on preoptic area and hypothalamus of Cardinal Neon Paracheirodon axelrodi (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Riaño-Quintero,Camilo; Gómez-Ramírez,Edwin; Hurtado-Giraldo,Hernán.
ABSTRACT In Colombia the use of glyphosate commercial formulations (Roundup™) for spraying have left deleterious effects on animals and humans. Much of this spraying takes place at the Orinoco basin, habitat of one of the most exported ornamental fish in Colombia, Cardinal neon. To evaluate the effect of Roundup Activo™ four experimental treatments were carried out with 0 mg/L (T1), 0.1 mg/L (T2), 1 mg/L (T3) and 5 mg/L (T4) during 30 days of exposure. The fishes were processed for high-resolution optical microscopy. The main finding of Roundup Activo™ exposure was an increase in mast cells number in brain blood vessels and some neuronal nuclei of the preoptic and posterior diencephalic areas, including hypothalamus. A correlation between concentrations...

Morphological variation among populations of Hemigrammus coeruleus (Characiformes: Characidae) in a Negro River tributary, Brazilian Amazon Neotropical Ichthyology
Lazzarotto,Henrique; Barros,Thiago; Louvise,José; Caramaschi,Érica Pellegrini.
ABSTRACT We explored patterns of phenotypic variation in Hemigrammus coeruleus from the Unini River basin, a blackwater river in the Brazilian Amazon. Geometric morphometrics was used to evaluate variation in body shape among populations from four tributaries (UN2-UN5). We found no evidence for sexual dimorphism in body size and shape. However, morphological differences among populations were detected as the analyses recovered significant groups corresponding to each sub-basin, with some overlap among them. The populations from UN2, UN3 and UN5 had more elongate bodies than fish from UN4. The most morphologically divergent population belonged to UN4, the tributary with the most divergent environmental conditions and the only one with seasonally-muddy...

Morphological and immunohistochemical comparison of the pituitary gland between a tropical Paracheirodon axelrodi and a subtropical Aphyocharax anisitsi characids (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Camacho,Laura Rincón; Pozzi,Andrea G.; de Freitas,Eliane G.; Shimizu,Akio; Pandolfi,Matías.
ABSTRACT Cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi and bloodfin tetra Aphyocharax anisitsi are two species of characids with high trade value as ornamental fish in South America. Although both species inhabit middle water layers, cardinal neon exhibits a tropical distribution and bloodfin tetra a subtropical one. Generally, these species are difficult to grow, so it becomes essential to know some key components of the neuroendocrine system to achieve their reproduction in captivity. Considering the importance of deepening the knowledge of the reproductive physiology through functional morphology, for the first time in this work we performed an anatomical, morphological and immunohistochemical analysis of the pituitary gland of these two species. In both...

Effect of beta 1,3 glucan in stress responses of the pencilfish (Nannostomus trifasciatus) during transport within the rio Negro basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Abreu,Janessa S.; Brinn,Richard P.; Gomes,Levy C.; McComb,Dawn Michelle; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Zaiden,Sérgio F.; Urbinati,Elisabeth C.; Marcon,Jaydione L..
We investigated the use of beta 1,3 glucan as an imunostimulant during a transport experiment to determine the effects upon the stress response of the pencilfish (Nannostomus trifasciatus). Pencilfish were fed for seven days with different concentrations of beta 1,3 glucan: 0.0% (control); 0.01%; 0.1% and 0.5% of beta 1,3 glucan per kg of feed-1. Fish were then transported for 24 hours by boat from Barcelos to Manaus. The highest dose of beta 1,3 glucan in the food increased Na+influx after 12 hours of transport and 0.1 and 0.5% beta 1,3 glucan maintained the flux of both ions close to zero at 24 hours. All doses of beta 1,3 glucan reduced K+ loss significantly in the beginning of the transport, but after 12 to 24 hours did not. No significant differences...

An Investigation of the Ornamental Fish Trade in Mozambique. Phase I: Information macrodiagnostic and project appraisal OceanDocs
Pereira, M.A.M.; Whittington, M.; Gonçalves, M.; Costa, A..
The extensive coral reefs along the coastline of Mozambique are a valuable national resource. They provide food and income for a large proportion of the country’s coastal communities and have a great potential for generating substantial economic growth within the tourism sector. The government of Mozambique has recognised the importance of coral reefs and has initiated a number of actions aimed at the sustainable management and conservation of this resource under its National Coral Reef Management Programme (NCRMP). The current two year moratorium on the trade in ornamental fish and live corals is one such initiative and it was important that the opportunity to formulate a framework for the sustainable management of this trade be acted upon quickly. It is...
