Urban ethnobotany: a case study in neighborhoods of different ages in Chapecó, Santa Catarina State Acta Botanica
Pradeiczuk,Aline; Eichemberg,Mayra Teruya; Kissmann,Camila.
ABSTRACT The study of urban home gardens is still a current gap in knowledge in Brazilian ethnobotany researches, especially in the south of Brazil. This study was carried out to survey the species composition of plants in urban residential home gardens of two neighborhoods in the municipality of Chapecó (state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil): an older neighborhood created prior to the 1950s, and a younger neighborhood created in the decade 1970-1980. It was hypothesized that the home gardens in the older neighborhood would be larger and have greater species richness than those in the younger neighborhood. Data from 10 home gardens in each neighborhood were collected through semi-structured interviews. The plants cited by interviewees were classified...

Interaction between sucrose and pH during in vitro culture of Nephrolepis biserrata (Sw.) Schott (Pteridophyta) Acta Botanica
Ambrósio,Sandra Tereza; Melo,Natoniel Franklin de.
The present work reports the effect of different pH and sucrose concentrations on in vitro propagation of Nephrolepis biserrata. Fronds aseptically obtained from stolon segment culture were cultivated in MS semi-solid medium supplemented with 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60g.L-1 sucrose and pH adjusted to 3, 5, 7 and 9, in a factorial design. Frond number and length, pinnae number, raquis length and diameter, fresh and dry matter weight were measured. Inhibition of shoot and leaf regeneration was observed in all the pH treatments in the absence of sucrose. On the other hand, when sucrose was added to the medium, the shoot number increased, reaching the maximum average values of 51.25 and 38.25 shoot per explant at pH 5 and 7, respectively. Sucrose concentrations from...

Bromeliad ornamental species: conservation issues and challenges related to commercialization - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i1.7314 Biological Sciences
Negrelle, Raquel Rejane Bonato; Universidade Federal do Paraná - UFPR; Anacleto, Adilson; Faculdade do Litoral Paranaense; Mitchell, Darcy; Royal Roads University.
Bromeliads grow almost exclusively in the New World tropics and subtropics, mainly in South America in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (ca. 1200 species). Within the last few decades, their beautiful shapes and colors, low maintenance and easy adaptability to small gardens have brought bromeliads into worldwide use as ornamental plants. While the ornamental bromeliad trade could make significant contributions to household economies in rural areas, the trade may represent a significant threat in some of the bromeliad biodiversity hotspot countries such as Brazil, Bolivia and Colombia. This paper presents an overview of production volumes, analysis of the Brazilian bromeliads trade chain – at the state, national and international levels – and recommendations...

Correlation between morphoagronomic traits and resistance to ethylene action in ornamental peppers. Horticultura Brasileira
Nascimento,Mayana F; Rêgo,Elizanilda R; Nascimento,Naysa FF; Santos,Rusthon MC; Bruckner,Claudio H; Finger,Fernando L; Rêgo,Mailson M.
The post-production quality of ornamental peppers can be shorted due to exposure to ethylene. The concentration of this phytohormone at 10 µL/L induces leaf, fruit and flowers abscission, ripening of climacteric fruits, organ senescence, seed germination and seedling growth. We evaluated the correlation between pepper morphoagronomic traits and resistance to ethylene on ornamental peppers. Two genotypes, one resistant (UFPB 132), a susceptible (UFPB 134), and two hybrids (DR x PN) were utilized (76 x PN) to assess the susceptibility or resistance to ethylene. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replications. First, 19 morphoagronomic characteristics were analyzed when the plants had 30% of fruits at the ripe stage. At this stage,...

Supplemental LED lighting increases pansy growth Horticultura Brasileira
Koksal,Nezihe; Incesu,Meral; Teke,Ahmet.
ABSTRACT: Pansy (Viola cornuta) is a facultative long-day plant that flowers from October until March in Turkey. During the winter months, low light levels can limit plant growth and development. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) can provide supplemental lighting in greenhouses which produce same light intensity with less energy than conventional incandescent lighting. Light emitting diode technologies have enabled affordable and efficient light systems to be installed in greenhouses and plastic tunnels in the field. In this experiment we evaluated the effects of supplemental red-orange LED lightening on the growth and development of pansy cv. Blue Blotch grown in plastic tunnels. The energy, which LEDs are to consume, was provided through a solar panel system...

Ribeiro,Wellington S; Carneiro,Clebson dos S; França,Christiane de Fátima M; Pinto,Cleide Maria F; Lima,Paula Cristina C; Finger,Fernando L; Costa,Franciscleudo B da.
ABSTRACT Within the genetic variability of the Capsicum genus there are plants with ornamental potential, but awry height required by the market. Paclobutrazol (PBZ), gibberellin retardant and growth inhibitor, is normally used as alternative to reduce plant height. The objective was to evaluate the PBZ (0, 25, 50 and 75 mg L-1) effect on plant height of eight pepper genotypes. Seven accessions [BGH 1032, BGH 1039, BGH 7073 (C. annuum), BGH 4285, BGH 4199, BGH 4355 and BGH 6371 (C. chinense)] of the germplasm bank from Universidade Federal de Viçosa and one access [MG 302 (C. annuum)] from the germplasm bank of the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais were evaluated. The PBZ application was ineffective in altering plant architecture of BGH...

Ribeiro,Wellington S; Carneiro,Clebson dos S; França,Christiane de Fátima M; Pinto,Cleide Maria F; Lima,Paula Cristina C; Finger,Fernando L.
ABSTRACT 1-MCP has been effectively used as an antagonist of ethylene deleterious actions in flowers and ornamental plants. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of 1-MCP (0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g m-3) in maintaining post-production quality of exogenous ethylene sensitive ornamental pepper. Two commercial varieties were evaluated: Pimenta Colorida and Pimentão Ornamental, both Capsicum annuum. The pre-treatment with 1-MCP, regardless of the applied concentration, was effective in blocking the ethylene action reducing the leaves abscission, flowers and fruits of both genotypes by 100%. Plants pretreated with 1-MCP had postproduction life increased by eight and nine days for Pimenta Colorida and Pimentão Ornamental, respectively. The 1-MCP application...

Substrate from vermiculite and cattle manure for ornamental pepper seedling production Horticultura Brasileira
Costa,Edilson; Prado,Jaime CL; Cardoso,Eliana D; Binotti,Flavio FS.
Substrates with a mixture of two or more materials have better conditions for root development of vegetables seedlings. This research aimed to evaluate the formation of ornamental pepper (cultivars Etna and Pyramid) seedlings in six different combinations between vermiculite (V) and cattle manure (M) (10%M + 90%V; 25%M + 75%V; 40%M + 60%V; 55%M + 45%V; 70%M + 30%V; 85%M + 15%V). The experiment was conducted at Universidade de Mato Grosso do Sul in a completely randomized design in a factorial scheme 6 x 2 (six substrates and two cultivars). The initial growth and emergence of ornamental pepper seedlings were evaluated. The highest amounts of vermiculite favored the emergence of pepper. The highest amounts of cattle manure in the substrate formed the best...

Repeatability of agronomic and morphological characteristics in ornamental pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Ribeiro,Wellington S; Costa,Lucas C; Dias,Fabíola S; Silva,Francisco CS; Pinto,Cleide MF; Finger,Fernando L.
Breeding programs seek to reduce the time spent assessing characteristics more times than necessary. However, this reduction should in no way undermine the representativeness and reliability of the information. Thus, an important success factor in breeding programs is the knowledge of the ideal number of assessments needed to evaluate commercially important characteristics in each species or population. In this context, this study aimed to determine the repeatability coefficient of eight biometric traits in four populations of ornamental pepper, seeking to increase the efficiency of evaluation and selection processes. There was no significant influence of the calculation method used over the estimate of the repeatability coefficient. The results indicated...
