A systematic surveillance progam conducted since 1980 along the coasts of Britanny has followed the evolution and epidemiological state of the natural O. eulis oyster beds and seed areas in the intertidal zones and deep water. Presently, Marteilia refringens exists endemically in Brittany estuaries ; the rate and degree of infestation varies from year to year depending on the hydrological conditions and the geographical region. In no case, however, is the return of flat oyster culture envisoned. Bonamia ostreae is present not only in the estuaries but also in the deep-water rearing areas (Baie de Quiberon, Cancale, Baie de St Brieuc). The infestation increases with age, but also depends on the quantity of the stock and the culture practises. In particular,... |

In contrast with the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas and the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, Ostrea edulis seed production in the hatchery has been reported to be erratic, with sudden and unexplained larval and post-metamorphosis mortalities. Fecundity and initial larval quality have been related to broodstock conditioning, but effects on larval development and metamorphosis remain poorly understood. In addition, molluscan larval mortalities have been often associated with bacterial contamination and flow-through techniques may help to overcome this problem. Both aspects have been considered in the present work. O. edulis broodstock were conditioned at 19 °C and fed three different microalgal diets. Two were single-species diets: Rhodomonas salina... |

Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in its aquaculture production. Selective breeding programs for resistance to bonamiosis have been undertaken to counter this disease. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters injected with the parasite to two tested families of oysters (20 and 8-month old at the beginning of the experiment, with different genetic backgrounds) originating from a selective breeding program developed by IFREMER in France. Mortalities were checked daily and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the... |

We have identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) for resistance to Bonamia ostreae, a parasite responsible for the dramatic reduction in the aquaculture of this species. An F-2 family from a cross between a wild oyster and an individual from a family selected for resistance to bonamiosis was cultured with wild oysters injected with the parasite, leading to 20% cumulative mortality. Selective genotyping of 92 out of a total of 550 F-2 progeny (i.e., 46 heavily infected oysters that died and 46 parasite-free oysters that survived) was performed using 20 microsatellites and 34 amplification fragment length polymorphism primer pairs. Both a two-stage testing strategy and QTL interval mapping methods were used. The two-stage... |

A breeding programme has been undertaken by Ifremer to produce selected Ostrea edulis families which are resistant to Bonamia ostreae, a parasite which is the most significant constraint on aquaculture of this oyster. Using such families, we aimed to identify Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) of resistance/susceptibility to bonamiosis. We used an F2 family derived from a bi-parental cross between a wild oyster and an individual from one of the selected oyster families. A total of 550 F2 individuals from the family cohabited with wild oysters that were injected with the parasite. Mortality was checked daily over six months and heart smears were used on moribund or dying oysters to detect the presence and level of infection of the parasite. Ninety two F2... |

The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) is a marine bivalve whose natural geographical distribution ranges along the European Atlantic coast from Norway to Morocco, in addition to the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The latest results obtained on the genetic differentiation between these populations have led us to persue studies at a finer scale, in order to estimate the effective number of breeders and the temporal dynamics of reproduction and, more specially, recruitment. Several experiments were performed to document (1) the variance in allele frequencies during a natural settlement period, (2) the paternal contribution to fertilization by analyzing larvae sampled at the brooding stage within individual females, (3) the variance of individual... |

Under controlled conditions of food density and temperature, larval performances (ingestion, growth, survival and settlement success) of the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, were investigated using a flow-through rearing system. In the first experiment, oyster larvae were reared at five different phytoplankton densities (70, 500, 1500, 2500 and 3500 μm3 μL−1: ≈1, 8, 25, 42 and 58 cells μL−1 equivalent TCg), and in the second, larvae were grown at four different temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30°C). Overall, larvae survived a wide range of food density and temperature, with high survival recorded at the end of the experiments. Microalgae concentration and temperature both impacted significantly larval development and settlement success. A mixed diet of Chaetoceros... |

The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is the species endemic to European coasts, both Atlantic and Mediterranean. It has been exploited since Roman times, but its aquaculture production decreased from around 20000 tons in the 1950's to 1500 tons today because of two successive diseases due to the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. Since 1985, Ifremer has been undertaking a breeding program to produce families of oysters tolerant to Bonamia. In this context, a further step would be to identify QTLs for resistance to this parasite. Therefore, as a first step a genetic map is now being built. The establishment of a genetic linkage map will provide a foundation for the mapping of QTLs, with the ultimate objective to implement... |
